I'm keen to know everyone's Top Ten horse reads (non technical/training). Mine are (and I'm cheating a bit by listing series)... 1. Black Beauty - Anna Sewell 2. The Black Stallion series (favorites are The Black Stallion, The Island Stallion, The Black Stallion Mystery) 3. Everything by Dick Francis 4. Canadian Entry - by Canada's own Christilot Hanson Boylen (out of print FYI) 5. The My Friend Flicka trilogy (MFF, Thunderhead & The Green Grass of Wyoming) by Mary O'Hara 6. Cimmaron - I d…

So I had an extremely interesting ride today. It's been a couple weeks since I have gone out to the barn, but with clients coming out tomorrow I really had to get on a couple of the buggers to get them ready. My first ride was great! The horse is extremely trustworthy and equally good outside as he is inside - a total ammy horse! The second ride... Well this is where things got fun. The mare is not only chestnut, but Trakehner too. (Not to say that all chestnut mares or all Trakehners are hand…
Last week I had to go to a meeting in the city centre (I live in a small village on the outskirts). I also needed to collect a pallet of feed as my horses are trialling a new mix from Winergy. As the feed store is on the way, I decide to drive the horse lorry & grab the feed on the way home. So picture me in a suit & high heels trying to park up a horse truck in the city centre! I'd also popped my dressage saddle in as I wanted the saddler to take a quick look. Well, I'd forgotten that…

The pony who is always in the hearts of the people she meets, always had a spark in her eyes, and her heart. The pony that lights up the barn when the lights arent on. The pony that nieghs when you enter the barn. That pony is Salsa Kelly Swartz. My pony. The beautiful, majestic, spunky pony of mine I had. The pony who I shall always remember in my heart, and soul. Salsa, if you can see this, know that I always love you and that I will never forget you. Rest in Peace, Salsa. I love you so much.…

I didn't spend a lot of time at the barn today, I had a dr.'s appointment. However, Barb did tell me that Michael tried to have Armani breed live (he had only bred through semen collection), and wouldn't you know; the mare kicked him squared in the testicles! Barb said that they'd most likely have to geld him. Ha ha! I mean, yeah that's horrible, but I'm a huge believer in karma, what goes around comes around; and Michael just got it back. Barb also stopped by the barn owner's house to have 'the…

This type of news is becoming commonplace. There needs to be a lot of re-thinking about what we are forcing horses to do. Jump racing carnage kills three horses June 30, 2008 In what can only be described as a day of carnage for the Australasian racing industry, three horses lost their lives in two races on either side of the Tasman on Saturday. The deaths have prompted horse welfare activists to renew their calls for an end to jump racing. There have been 10 deaths in Australia alone in the…

Pammie His name is not Gelding or Golden, Pammie thought to herself as she traipsed through the forest trail picking up Bounder’s droppings so Maxim wouldn’t complain his “woods are soiled.” Besides, what kind of psychic had a blinking neon crystal ball in the window of his Monopoly house? And a parrot named Goob? Mr. Vladimir was clearly a scam artist, in spite of his predictions about Uncle Paul and the cleaning woman. She pushed aside the fronds of a Common Horsetail Fern and scooped up a…

Now I am in the UK where we are currently looking for property around the Cotswolds area. All of the little villages are so pretty! I love the cream teas and good english pub food here. For the past three days I have been at Talland School of Equitation which is run by Pammy Hutton, a very well-known international dressage rider and trainer, and you know why when she teaches you. Do you ever wonder what goes on inside your horse’s mind? On January 23, 2006, The New York Times magazine ran a cover story called The Animal Self. According to the article, tests on animals have uncovered “not only the distinctiveness of birds and beasts but also…their deep resemblances to us and our own behaviors.” In other words, animals do not only have temperaments, they have complex and distinctive personalities, just like people. Imagine “African gray parrots that can not only count bu…

Gah, sometimes the drama is so intense I can't stand it! Barb wasn't able to convince the other half of her students to come all the way out to this other barn she's been talking to, so we're staying put. Thankfully I found out that the board in the small barn Danny's been booted out to hasn't increased. It's just the main barn that's gone up. So that was a pleasant surprise. I'm going to have to move all of Danny's stuff down to that tackroom. Geez, I just want things to settle down! The barn o…

I would like to have every person that reads this blog post prays for Sajel. I was there that day that Salsa, Sajel's pony colicted. I remember that Sajel was sad to see her colic, but was happy to hang with her buds who supported her all the way through. I will always keep Salsa in my heart for ever. Well, Michael's done it. He's gone too far. He posted flyers all around the barn saying that our barn is now a "Show, sales, training, and boarding barn" and has raised the board $100! This was too much for Barb, who was already entertaining the idea of moving. She can't afford to pay $550 per month for each of her five horses. She's going to take me to visit another barn she has been communicating with. So I'm probably going to be moving Danny to follow her. On a lighter note, I'm adopti…

I am so relieved that our exams are over! We started early this morning, with barn duty at 6.30. The dressage tests started at 8.30 so we had to be on and warming up by at least 8am. I think I was quite nervous because I was really quiet and serious and held a straight face for most of the morning. Usually I act normal before a performance, but I guess I didn't know what to expect because being in front of German judges and riding an unfamiliar horse isn't exactly the most ideal situation! hehe…
Theodore Denman and I were again summoned to the Hospital. This time to have a monitor attached to my chest for a 24 hour reading, in order that they may assess my fibrillations (or palpitations) and see exactly what is going on before taking the next steps. Medication seems to be doing the trick at the moment, as long as I always remember to take everything at the correct time. We are therefore somewhat dependent on the bathroom cabinet being within easy reach the whole time. or my remembering…

Took the pony and one of the horses to a schooling show on Saturday. We learned a lot and for the most part they were great! The pony was in the 2'3" class, and thank goodness he's one of those great ones where you never have to worry about them stopping, regardless of what distance you give them. (I had a couple long spots that I would have preferred to stick in another small stride, but apparently that was not what pony wanted... we were giving the jumpers a run for their money!) Woo! I finally got a summer job! I grabbed lunch with Danny's former owner (we're still really close, she's so neat like that), and she asked me if I wanted to train dogs at her husband's obedience school. I was like, 'Hey, beats sacking groceries!'. So I'm starting on Thursday. She assures me that training a dog to sit and stay is waaaay easier than training a horse dressage movements, so I should be set!

I started my summer History class today. The teacher seems nice, but let's see if I can handle an 8 o'clock class during the summer, guh. Took a nap afterwards and then headed to the barn. I helped Barb lunge a woman's two horses (Michael was out to lunch), then we worked with a little quarter pony mare named Missy, I ended up getting a mini lunge lesson on her. Then we lunged Vivian when it started absolutely pouring. So I just walked around on her after the heavier shower had pas…

I feel like this is the story of my life. I'm one of those people that gets along with just about everyone and though it sounds great at first, it does come with its little burdens. For example, I'm ALWAYS the one that people come to to vent, get an opinion, some advice, whatever. Barb and I are convinced that Michael is trying to run people out of the barn so he can have their stalls for his horses. He yelled at this sweet Swedish woman today for lunging her friend's horse for her. Going on about how she isn't allowed because she didn't have trainer's insurance or a trainer's license. This is getting ridiculous. If it gets any worse we're going to have to call to barn owner (who is in Germany right now) and report him. He should not be treating boarders this way.…

Oh boy, more drama. I'm gone two days and apparently Michael has run a boarder off. He moved her horse out of his stall without telling her to accommodate for this new mare and her two week old foal. When she simply asked him why he didn't inform her and explained how she cleaned up the stall and resurfaced the run all herself; Michael simply replied "I'm in charge so I can do whatever the hell I want." Dodger and Larry had one rail each in the level 3's coming off of a rollback to a combination. Today was an interesting day. The two horses we weren't expecting great things from this week has stellar rides and took blue ribbons in their classes. Michael's stallion however had a huge meltdown in the jumper ring that started off with a thirty-second rearing tantrum which he hadn't done in well over five months. He then proceeded to plow through the course with Michael shouting expletives the entire way. I knew he was going to be hell to deal with after the ride so I high-tailed it back to…
