How do you determine what type of grain to feed your horse?

How do you determine what type of grain to feed your horse?

Often this is based on the amount of work that a horse does, but what other factors do you take into consideration when deciding what to feed your horse?

And what do you do if your horse doesn't like his food? Do you add in something sweet like molasses to entice him to eat it? Or do you try many different types of food until you get the right one?

Well...I don't feed grain to any of my horses, and I would never add molasses to anything to make it palatable. My choice of additive, if I need to cover the taste of Bute or antibiotics, is unsweetened apple sauce.

Our horses eat free choice grass hay 24/7, they get a very good vitamin mineral pre-mix, and those who can't maintain condition on that plus pasture are fed a product called Equi-Cal, which is higher in fat than most commercial feeds and very high in digestible fibre. All the horses who get the Equi-Cal love it, and it maintains their condition and energy levels really well without making them hot and overloading their digestive systems with starch (carbohydrates) or sugar (molasses).

In my experience many people overfeed concentrates, and underfeed forage, and go right off the charts when it comes to supplementation. They are satisfying their own personal needs, not those of their horses...
I asked the vet about grain, he said, oh give him lots. I asked his foot trimmer, he said don't give him any grain. So I went with the foot trimmer. So it's grassy hay only for my Guy.

If my horse didn't like his food, I would call the vet, because if this horse isn't eating, he's sick. Fortunately he's never sick.
