Trivia Tidbits: Why do some horses prefer standing out in the rain to being under shelter?

Last week’s answer: Horses seek out mineral-rich riverbanks or areas on the ground to lick if the feed they eat is lacking in iron, phosphorus, calcium, iodine, copper, manganese, or salt. We should give our domestic horses a mineralized salt block not the white variety, which is pure salt, but the red kind in addition to their hay to make sure they don’t resort to licking the dirt, which certainly can cause intestinal problems if they pick up too much sand.

I should also say that maybe they don't like being inside when it is raining because of the storms. Taz my Arab was in the barn during a bad thunder storm-lightening hit right behind the barn-now he stays out side in storms all the time-makes me afraid for him getting hit by lightening.

Their instinct is to stay in the open where they can see predators coming and make a quick getaway. Stay away from caves, there's bears in there!

If you've ever ridden in a trailer or had to seek out the comfort of a shelter in the middle of a rainstorm, you'll find a similarity. Horses aren't crazy about being in enclosed spaces unless we ask them to. Top it off with rain pelting the roof and making it sound deafening and they'll prefer to just put their butt's in to the rain and wait it out.

With my mare only, not normal horses, it's sear spite... She thinks "if I get nice and soaking wet Mom wont bother to ride me....

Horses do not really like to be in enclosed spaces where they cannot see everything that is going on, or where they can be trapped when the one exit space is cut off. Some horses survival instinct is so strong, they will stay outside even in the worst of storms.

I believe that horses do this because on the hot humid summer days, when they get a little rain!! they are able to cool off nicely. i also believe they do this a force of habit, it is something that has been put into them to understand that they need to keep their skin moisturized
