Permalink Reply by Kathy Miller on January 30, 2012 at 5:31pm I think its a way for them to get clean and its comforting for them-in the summer its a way to keep cool.
Permalink Reply by Kathy Miller on January 30, 2012 at 6:39pm I should also say that maybe they don't like being inside when it is raining because of the storms. Taz my Arab was in the barn during a bad thunder storm-lightening hit right behind the barn-now he stays out side in storms all the time-makes me afraid for him getting hit by lightening.
There n\might not be food in the shelter but there might be out side
Permalink Reply by Marlene Thoms on January 30, 2012 at 9:30pm Their instinct is to stay in the open where they can see predators coming and make a quick getaway. Stay away from caves, there's bears in there!
Permalink Reply by Stephanie Rutherford on January 30, 2012 at 10:04pm If you've ever ridden in a trailer or had to seek out the comfort of a shelter in the middle of a rainstorm, you'll find a similarity. Horses aren't crazy about being in enclosed spaces unless we ask them to. Top it off with rain pelting the roof and making it sound deafening and they'll prefer to just put their butt's in to the rain and wait it out.

Permalink Reply by Phoebe Oudshoorn on February 2, 2012 at 10:50pm Horses do not really like to be in enclosed spaces where they cannot see everything that is going on, or where they can be trapped when the one exit space is cut off. Some horses survival instinct is so strong, they will stay outside even in the worst of storms.
Permalink Reply by Giselle Kalnins on February 3, 2012 at 11:21am I believe that horses do this because on the hot humid summer days, when they get a little rain!! they are able to cool off nicely. i also believe they do this a force of habit, it is something that has been put into them to understand that they need to keep their skin moisturized
