1. So the foal will not get tangled when it is being born.

1. To protect the tail and dock while in transit.

2. To smooth the top of the tail before a show.

3. As part of grooming process.

4. For covering a mare. 

1. to keep the tail out of the way when a foal is being born.

2.to make sure the tail does not get caught when trailering

3. to make the tail look pritty for a show
