A pregnant mare, a retired race horse, was shot in the head and killed in her paddock on the owner's property near Beaufort, North Carolina sometime between Sunday and Monday. "Breeze," owned by Elizabeth Loftin, was worth approximately $30,000.
Police detectives say they think the horse was targeted and killed on purpose.
Calling the death a "senseless shooting and killing," investigators are asking for anyone with information to come forward so they can locate the person or persons responsible. Animal cruelty is a Class 1 felony which holds a maximum sentence of 15 months of prison.
