Irish or warmblood? 10 Replies

So, if you had a choice, would you go Irish or warmblood? I'd go Irish over warmblood any day...except possibly for pure dressage! Irish bred horses have the blood, the brains and that crucial surviv…

Have a friend in the the thoroughbred world here in Kentucky that is from Leixlip. I've visited there and find Ireland to be one of God's loveliest spots.

Happy Holidays!

Hi Jenny, There are some picture of him on "my page" with the woman who bred him. Nothing that does him justice though, he is quite the handsome beast. Your horses look soft and lovely in their dressage work. I know what a challenge that is for event horses. ...I'm a dressage rider so the jumping stuff only looks frightening to me. Laura

Great pic Jenny...you are one of the very few to have jumped in the main arena at Dublin show, and one of the very few to ride a pony as good as this, and one of the very few to be as modest...William

Hi Laura. He sounds fab! Do you have any pics? I've attached a pic of my connemara jumping pony taken at the dublin horse show one year. Wish I could find a horse like him! He was such a trier. Though I think I'm not too far off with the young horse that I have at the moment :) Can't wait until next year to start eventing her.

I have a Connemara Cross, ,he's smart, talented, sensitive and just about the most opinionated horse I've ever ridden. I love him to death, I used to think I really wanted to kill him. I used to ride Warmbloods and we would talk about "rideability and trainability" as being desirable traits. Well this little piece of work is about as far from either as you can get. However, "clash of the Irish"seems to be growing more infrequent over time and I'm now beginning to think I have a truly great partner. Laura Coffey

Hi Laura. Connemara's are the most amazing ponies...I had one when I was young that was only 13.3hh, so he had to jump in 14.2 grades and went to 'grade A' in a year. An Irish connemara pony won individual gold at the pony European championships this year - a really stunning pony. see towards the bottom of www.cpbs.ie to see pics of Ballyowen Maybell Molly. Have you ever had a connemara?

Yes..they are the most wonderful pony in the world...they have their origins 2,500 years ago when Spanish horses were crossed with native Irish ponies in the west of Ireland. In the 1940's particularly a small amount Arab and TB blood was introduced. They breed true even when out of their natural environment...which is why the huge herds in Denmark and the USA are such a success. They are wonderful as a childs pony or small adult mount. They cross wonderfully with TBs and sport horses to give brain, durability and versatility. They are one of Ireland's most underrated equine resources. Each year the major sale of Connemaras is in Clifton, Co Galway in August. William
