There has been so many comments on here that I haven't been ablet o follow as well as I'd like. I'm wondering why you aren't getting her out walking and exercising to get things moving? I'm sure u have your reasons. I just don't know what they are. Curious. Thanks and best wishes for the little mom. Nurseing cramps and consitipation seem to be all too common after birth for horse and human. so uncomfortable and wearing/

Chantilly is being a real trooper getting the IV fluids into her, and the baby is sleeping so good. And Carolyn so sorry to hear about your mare, if anything ever happened to my mare I would be do devistated.

Colic is a scary thing.  I lost my beloved mare 3 years ago at age 18 because she colicked during the night and when I went to the barn in the morning she was gone. I had owned her since she was 7 weeks old and trained her myself so we had a very close relationship.  Her loss was devastating and I don't think I will ever get over it, especially the guilt for not realizing something was really wrong.  It was a lesson learned the hard way, that's for sure.

glad to hear Chantilly is doing better than she was, about a month ago where I board my mare, they had a mare colic out so bad she did not make it, so I am glad to hear she is doing better, this site is so educational for us ppl that want to breed our mares, and what to watch out for. Thank you Heather for taking the time to explain stuff to us all.And to all the others that answer questions.

Usually the enema will no reach where the impaction is.  Also, there's a chance that the fluid will add to the blockage and cause a tear.  We're working from the inside out to rehydrate the entire gut and therefore rehydrate the manure.  What she passed last night was very dry and very hard.

And I had to ask my vet this same question because my first plan of action is an enema, so I was curious as well.

Heather, could you explain (unless you have already) why giving an enema is not an option here?  thanks

Three bags of fluid on board, banamine and a muscle relaxant that will help for abit.  We are hoping that this will rehydrate her enough to start passing some poo.  Be Warned  - this will also cause pain and cramping while it's moving, so don't be alarmed.  We're doing what's best for her at this point and hoping to get things moving soon!  Not sure yet if we will need to run more this evening.

thought this was addictive waiting for tilly to give birth but it's worse now watching little one running around like a loony = thank you Heather and gang for letting us share this with you - as having two boys horses not going to be seeing any babies in my field

HI Laurie :0) The fluids that Tilly is receiving are being given IV (into the vein) through a catheter. These will help to keep her from getting dehydrated and also to help move through anything that maybe sticking and causing her to have issues pooing. :0)

aww, i see she has a tether. is it subcutaneous?  now to keep the little one away from it.

i actually thought i saw poop last night about 10ish. she kept raising her tail and at one point sniffed at something in the center of the stall.

keep up the good work. they are a cute pair.
