I turned 51 in May and have my own horse who I rescued back in August 2007. I started to take western lessons in March 2008 to learn to ride properly and be safe around my gelding. I rode as a teenager, but never took lessons, just did the usual, kick to go, pull to stop. I am also an amputee and so glad I have gotten back with horses. It has been so much fun, I just love it and it really helps me physically too. There is lots of time to learn and grow together.

Jan if you are 52 and your dad is still riding and competing. I want to be like him when I grow up. lol Yeah for him to keep riding and being good at it. You are right age is no barrier if you don't let it be. My mom celebrated her 80 birthday by going on a little "trail ride" with me and sis, just out from the farm but never the less it was a ride and proves that age is just a number. She is 92 and still going strong.

HI, ladies:

I'm over 40 and over 50, so I guess I qualify for both groups!

I"m 52, have 2 horses of my own, and ride/train clients' horses as well. I compete in dressage at the national level regularly, teach and coach and sometimes have time to judge...

I just got a wireless connection after years of dial-up, and I can't believe the change in speed - or maybe it's just that I'm slowing down...

I'm off tomorrow to teach a 4 day dressage clinic, and two days later I leave for a CPEDI3* in Hartpury, UK, with my Dad, who's competing for Canada. Age is no barrier to riding if the desire is strong enough!

I got my first horse just 6 yrs ago at 45 and a year ago started barrel racing and doing Western Pleasure I had no idea what I had been missing. I'm finally getting the confidence I have needed. Taking lessons in western pleasure and it has been so much fun. Hello to everyone in this group and Eileen I hope I am still riding at your age I sure plan to.KUDOS to you

Thanks Barbara, I get more compliments with that hat than anything else. I don't know why I guess it is just part of me. It is older than dirt but then so am I. lol It was a baby blue when I bought it a million years ago. It has been in the sun, so faded, then in the rain, so water marked so I doctored it up and used a purple bingo dobber on it. So if nothing else it is unique. lol It has been a lot of places the many hats cannot bost of. I will see what pictures I can dig up of the grey horse...perhaps I will wait for the up and coming camping and riding excursion this month. I should have some one ones from that one.

Hi y'all I just saw this new group and thought that I had better join in on the fun. Yes I am over 50 (15 years experience in that area) and ride where ever and what ever I can. Trail riding is a great way to have a special bond with ones horse. I have two trail horses right now, and one retired trail horse. The two younger ones are TWH and I love them to death. Hope to get aquainted with everyone here soon.

Hi, I am very new here and I have enjoyed looking around the site now that I have High Speed! I am 52 and have 3 horses. Two of them are rising 5 and I am proud to say I have trained and backed both of them. The 3rd is a pasture ornament who deserves a early retirement. I only have time for one these days so I have chosen the gelding to be my main mount...........He is the chestnut in my avatar. We are taking training very slow. I have had to many unplanned dismounts in past to push the envelope.lol. I look forward to meeting all who join.

Never stop riding.
If you have stopped for any reason, start riding again. You (over 50) have more experience with dealing with fear, and the fear will pass. You might feel more frail, riding will make your body stronger. You may be scared that the horse might not like you, well you have all this experience of getting people to like you, horses like the same type of consideration that people like to get.
And if you are just starting, there are a lot of people in the world that did not start until late, and with dedication and study become good riders.
KEEP ON RIDING!
