WOW I give you credit, yes it does get better then more you do it the easier it is.  I was like that also in the beginning, now I help other students tack up for my instructor.  The more you learn the more you want to learn.  Have fun

Hi Friends!  Well, I had riding lesson #4 tonight on my dear little Comet. Love it all, but sure wish I had a horse to practise on between weekly lessons! I Gotta tell you all I feel like all thumbs while switching from halter to bridle and visa versa.  Poor little Comet, I am sure he was wondering if I would ever get this right!...I need more arms and hands to hold everything and committed the cardinal sin and dropped the bridle on the floor! Does all this get better after awhile, all you experts out there???   lol  Well at least I did not get the gallop booties on unsidedown and backwards tonight! And that blasted cinch (riding western)  Practise, practise!  However, seriously, the fact that I am even on a horse without palpitations at this point is exhilarating! Right turn, left turn reverses..wow! Now, dismounting is a whole 'nother issue..I know what you are supposed to do, but getting the legs to do it..gees...My riding instructor has been in the business of horses for 50+years and said tonight, she is still learning. So, I guess I am doing ok after 4 weeks!!  LOL.  Cheers ladies and gents!!!

A couple of years ago I fell in love with Harry (photo left) his owner (a very clever lady) saw me coming and insisted that If she let me buy Harry I had to take his two "aunties" too - they were both in their late twenties.  I had them both until last year but until then they were loved and well cared for and had a happy life until the end.  Just goes to prove that there are people out there willing to take any horse on you just have to search a bit.  Harry´s previous owner had been advertising all over the UK for about three months and had seen almost 100 people before she fell for my husband and I!

Or perhaps you could share with a younger person so that you could still be involved, offer your experience at times and enjoy the progress.  Just a thought.

 I have seen this problem from both sides (sounds like a song!).

I have owned three horses: I was lucky to be able to keep them all in retirement and did not have to think about selling them (still have 2 of them 22 years old this year and happy field ornaments). However this next part may make you feel better. When I wanted a younger horse, 2 years ago, I found a lovely woman through my farrier who could not ride anymore but had a 6 year old mare that she desperately wanted a good home for. Once she got to know me, she would have given me the mare for nothing just so she would go to someone who would care for her as much as she did. I did insist on paying for her - probably less than market value but as much as I could afford. But that mare will be with me for the rest of her life and I am so happy with her.

There must be someone out there that will love your horses as much as you do.  If the 2 horses are bonded, it would be lovely if they could go together but that would be a more difficult task although not impossible. Take your time and find the right people - it can be done. Of course you know to be very wary of people that offer to take them for free. If they can afford to keep them, they can afford to pay at least something for them. Best of luck.

here is my thought, horse please use they do every thing in there power to happly do the job they were breed for.  Are they happy just standing around, do they love to do there job? Selling your horse is very difficult, I don;t know if I would be able to do it.  but these questions I just asked would keep coming to my mind. I want them to be happy

Oh Dear!!!  To sell or not to sell!!!  I have 2 horses, a brother and sister whom I've bred. I bred the younger one for my daughter who isn't riding anymore. I love them both, but since my TIA in Nov, I can often barely make it through a day at work, live alone ride 2 horses.  They are too nice to leave sitting around..... but..... I do not want to sell them. I have had them advertised, and people are starting to show interest in the younger gelding (4 yrs old) who I think is the better moving horse. His older sister, 6 yrs, I have done dressage and A&P's on quite successfully until this year.  As she is my 1st bred, broken in and shown horse, I don't want ot sell her either. Advice??

Exactly!  The mere whiff of a stable gets my interest and I will happily coo and cluck over the smallest ugliest little pony  as I would at any prize winner - they are just so lovable and defenceless.  Yes, thats a good expression It.s in the blood.  Glad there are so many more over 50´s that feel the same way, and long may we all continue.

Husbands are funny, my husband and I went on vacation, at one point he turned and said , you are just not happy unless you are at the barn or around horses.  I have to say this is true.  but when I turned 50 I told him I really wanted to be around horses, I have half of my life left and would like to live it that way.  I think he is starting to understand.  It is in the blood
