So sorry to hear about your toe and you TIA.  Life can be really challenging at times, can't it.

I hope you get back to riding.

hi! haven't signed in in ages. What's been happening? I got my toe broke by comet. He started when i was changing his cover, and his hoof hit the end of my big toe, the end bone split vertically in 3.  That was a drama. Then Nov 22 at work I had a TIA and ended up in hospital. That was more drama. I've had to scratch from shows, and couldn't ride, as my blood pressure was crazy after the TIA. They say my lifestyle is 'perfect', but my genetics are what is bad.

Hi Jo

I was diagnosed with MM in 2005 and was so very ill that they really didn.t feel that I would survive for many months.  This year I have come through a year of chemo leading up to my stem cell transplant in February of this year.  I had three months to recueperate then back into chemo.  The good news is that I have just been told that I am officially in remission.

I am still quite weak and the maintenance chemo does take it,s toll but for the main I am pretty good.  There are new drugs on the scene every few months now and pretty soon MM will be a chronic illness which can be managed instead of the incurable cancer at present. As part of my chemo I took part in the Myeloma 11 trial using the drug Revlimid but others I know have had good results from Velcade too.  Sorry to twitter on - you probably know all this already but I do worry when I hear that people are given such a dismal prognosis when I know that things are improving for us all the time.  Good luck with your journey and your riding.

Take Care

Best Wishes

Carol xx

My husband has participated as an instructor in a Cancer Research program for Cancer survivors. Some of these sick folks are on Chemo, some radiation, some are between treatment schedules. They had their saliva tested for a particular hormone, I think it was Serotonin but we weren't given any info because of HIPPAA rules on patient privacy and anonymity.

The saliva was tested before and after the sessions on horsemanship, ground work through riding over an 8 week time frame.  The result was the levels of beneficial hormones, increased appetite, sleep patterns and exit questionnaire answers showing increased relaxation and the culmination of all this info was that for the time these very sick folks are with horses they don't think about their illness thus the body can heal easier.

The local hospitals send survivors that want this as a therapy, if it works for them it will for sure work for anybody.

One of my close friends survived a double mastectomy, hysterectomy, MURSA (the infection that kills) and through out it all she rode her horse or when she couldn't she brushed him, sometimes she just watched while we brushed him and she bossed us, then we ate lunch. She now rides every day, wears a jockeys vest (I highly recommend) and helmet. Is still bossy but we love her for it.

So RIDE ON all you people, sick or well it's good for your body and good for your soul. Some have music, some art, I have horses and gardening.

You are two very brave ladies. Horses are definitely the best medicine. My horse helps me to shed my stress when I come home from work. The minute I drive down the barn driveway I am in another world.

Keep on riding - Cheers and all the very best.

Divertirse en Espana!

I am lucky in that I don't have cancer, but I have MS and my fatigue is huge.  I usually just ride 30 minutes at a time, 2 or 3 times a week.  When I had to put my last horse down I didn't get another because it had gotten too much for me to take care of them.

Good for you for keeping going throughout your treatments.  I hope your trip to Spain goes smoothly!

Hello

Although I live in England and our weather isn.t always the best for riding I do my best.  I have been riding since I was around seven years of age and still haven.t lost the thrill of being around horses.

I have been suffering from Cancer (Myeloma) for quite a long time now and have been in chemo for around a year and had a stem cell transplant in February this year.  After a lot of hard work my horses and I are happily playing together again depending on how much energy I have each day.  In between my wonderful husband and two horses I have had plenty of incentive to keep going!

I wonder if anyone else is continuing to ride whilst dealing with serious illness and how they are coping.  We are considering an extended stay in Spain with the horses and would have to transport them in our large horse transporter and would welcome any advice on making the journey as comfortable for the horses as possible.  Obviously we shall be taking Vets advice and treatments before we go but any advice from personal experience would be super.

Many thanks for taking the time to read this.

Regards Carol

ps I think this website is smashing and am busy finding my way around it so please do excuse me if I make mistakes.! Thank you.

Not only am I a senior rider, but my AQHA mare is 18 this year.  We still compete at 5 or 6 shows a season, and are usually in the ribbons!  She loves her job as a Western Pleasure/Trail Competitor.
