Ellin ,

this is truly a difficult business to be in, my board is 400.00 a month , the trainer does haul the horses to shows free of charge. she does not charge extra for anything I really do not know how you and my trainer do it . I do work but when I am off I go to the barn and help clean stalls and spread hay, sometimes I also tack up schooling horses.  My grandma would say many hands make light work.

Sounds as though we're in a good place in central Indiana.  Square bales of 50 or more pounds cost me $3 each plus delivery and stacking in the barn, well worth the price.  Some 700 lb round bales were available for $20 each, but I bought out the entire stock so now am paying $35 for 1200# rounds.  I own a boarding stable with an indoor arena and a lighted outdoor, 30 acres of pasture and extra services.  We clean stalls, etc. 7 days a week and provide many extra services such as handling the boarders' horses for the vet and farrier.  For all of this, plus a friendly smile, we charge $325 per month.  Even at this rate and with many economies in place it is very difficult to stay in the black every month.  I am committed to holding the line on the board, but may need to place some surcharge amounts on extra services.

You are lucky Sherry.  Here in Northwest B.C Canada we pay minimum $5 a 50lb square bale and $45 to $60 for a l000 lb round bale.  I was feeding rounds from October to February now I am feeding square bales, I find them much easier to maneuver at my age.  Board here is $50 to $150 month for self boarding (you do all the chores for your horse, paying for the use of barn and paddock)  $300+ for full board (the property owner does all the chores, you just come and ride your horse) then there is flexibility in between. -20 here today, freezing wind blowing day and night, hardly a repreave during the day this has been going on for 3 days now.  I feed and water and hide in the house, the horses eat and drink then hide under the spruce trees. I hate this weather like this, the good thing is the sunshine, but can't enjoy it outside because of the wind. What's that old saying "March roars in like a lion and goes out like a lamb"?

I live in NE PA where I board my horse, feed, hay , stall cleaning and turn out are all included.  I have a belgian/tb cross and he get all the hay he wants.  They cut, bail and store there own hay.  I guess I am lucky

so what do you pay for hay in your parts? i was pleased to only pay $7 a bale. it is often advertised at $10 and in the feed shops, up to $15. alfalfa is around $20.

but enough of that..... i actually rode tonight. life is bliss... even though i found out the report i have been avoiding at work is due thurs.  i haven't been able to ride for 2 1/2 weeks due to her losing a shoe, and the farrier was this, was that, all legit, but not putting on my shoe.....

oh we don't make hay! way little land we have. but the moving it is hard enough! overall we moved 147 bales today. the spring came off the trailer and steve got hit on the mouth, thank goodness it wasn't his eye. then we drove the last 30 bales to my broken daughter's place (motorcycle accident then surgery mon-tues) , bathed the cushings' horse, moved furniture and finally got home! ah aren't weekends good! and i didn't even get to ride after waiting 2 weeks for the farrier (and a show next sun).  looking forward to going back to work at this point!!

We just moved hay today too, we store it at the farmers until we need it.  Easier for us that way.  We used to make hay years ago, it got too much worry and work.  Worry about the weather and hard work getting it all in especially when we were short handed and it was just the two of us.
