Hi everyone, I have a new book out that teaches kids how to ride. It is called The Little Red Riding Book and it is a fictional story with lots of educational information. I'm not one for sales pitches, but of you'd like to check it out the website is www.redridingbook.com and it is available through Trafalgar Square (horseandriderbooks.com). Thanks!

My mom and Dad were responsible for my first childhood I am responsible for the rest. I told my mom that I would never grow up. I'm keeping my word

I totally agree with April too. Our ranch should be called "Shoestring Ranch" everything is done just that way. I make lots of my own stuff, blankets, hooked saddle pads, clothing, slow feeders, etc. I also fix my own saddles and fences, build my own buildings with help from my hubby and a lot of creativity. The main thing is to make it safe and secure, doesn't have to look pretty and painted. Only if the paint is free:)

Yes! If something is a passion, you learn how to enjoy it on a budget. By rights I shouldn't have a horse, but it's emportant to me so I prioritize (?). I board at a backyard barn that dosn't have an indoor ring (though this time of year I wish I could afford that), and 90% of my riding gear and clothing were bought used. If I need a new saddle the old one gets sold first and that money used to buy the next. You just learn to make do.

Well you couldn't find a more expensive hobby than horses, even if you have them at home. I retired on a reduced pension so now I have started a new business - I could afford to eat or have horses and since I'm addicted to both, a job seemed like the solution. If you really want to save money, give up the horses. I think if most of us sat down and added up the vet bills, the farrier bills, the trailering costs, the feed, tack, grooming supplies, carrots, we'd recognize it's a crazy hobby. But I will work my can off to pay the bills for those horses because this is the dream I've had forever.

i agree with april!! recession, redundancy, and sickness- all cured me. but its amazing what one can do on a budget. im just so glad i can get out to shows-although i have cut down on the number. and decided not to go to the national dressage champs, when that was my aim of the season.. ah well, next year, and hopefully my young lady will be better and better.... but still wearing the same pair of boots. lol

Awwwww..what is it about walkiing into a tack store or a tack room for that matter that just gives us that sense of peace and all is right with the world. That's not sickness that's passion ladies, enjoy :-) I can smell the leather and sweat now, mmmmmmm! Love you prose Roberta, may I have it quoted at my wake?

Truth be known, I am officially on a budget. No buying any horse stuff for a year. I just have to stay away from tack shops. A couple years ago I went to Bahr's for a hoofpick and came out with a Schleese saddle (forgot the hoofpick). Whew! It's amazing what a recession can do to give you a slap of reality.

I became addicted to Aussie boots (Blundstones), loved the pair I bought - but they are really expensive. So a few years ago I bought my daughter's when she was sick of them - that made 2 pairs. Then I found a pair in a 2nd hand shop - 3 pairs. And years ago I bought the tall riding boots for showing - which I never do anymore. The Aussie boots are so darned comfortable that I wear them always - and waterproof if properly sealed, so my feet stay dry in them. One pair is strictly for the barn and they are disgusting. One pair is for riding and too scratched up to wear otherwise. The third pair is still in good shape and it sees the street as well as the irons. These should last me until I'm too old to ride, though I do picture myself pushing a walker down a nursing home hallway wearing my Aussie boots. HA!

Try going through a bankruptcy, that'll cure you!
