Hey is your family in B,C. anywere near where those dreadful fires are? Man I can't imagine having horses in an area like that and worrying about their safety. The heat here has been brutal, Very hot and humid. like a sauna. Hard to believe that last week we were wearing jackets in early morning or once the sun went down., strange year all the way around. I don't even think of riding in temps like this. The horses seem to know how to keep cool. They stay pretty much in the barn during the hottest hours. It is much cooler in there.

Sounds like a tough job to tackle alone. No grandchildren around? Me neither. All of my family is out west in the Kootenay Mountains near Nelson in BC. Haying is tough at the best of times. If you find a fellow to help with the hay make sure he is good looking. lol. What temperatures are you runing into where you are? We have about a high of 26. Good luck. Gail

That is good that you at least got out to ride Gail. I have not ridden in this heat at all. I don't want to ride, so I certainly don't think that my horses would enjoy the outing either. I have had to clear up some areas in my barn to get ready for some more hay. I have already done one small load, that was before the heat moved in and I got it done in no time. But I got a call from my hay lady today and there is a wagon waiting with my name on it and another if I like what I see. So since it was supposed to rain today I said that I would be out there to get the hay tomorrow. That at least gave me some time to prepare the barn for the new shipment. NOw I have to figure out how I will do this all on my own. I can get the top off of the pile and into the mow with out a problem...then I can unload and pile the rest of it on ground level. Then with any luck at all the second wagon will be one of the ones where I can keep the wagon over winter and store it in my barn therefore not having to unload it. Other wise I have to find a young fellow that is young, willing and able to help with the hay...if they are big and strong enough to do the job they are usually already working at a summer job...no room for us old ladies anymore. lol

Went out alone today but not for long. Trails and wet and slippery. I am treating mud fever. Just a small area and also a tail that has scabs and raw spots on it. Had the vet out and we cleared up one spot but I guess I have to check the whole dock as there is a new spot there today. As my mother said, it is a long way from his heart. Gail.

I hear ya Gail regarding letting the horse take is own way home, of course they take the short cut through the underbrush, wind falls, brambles, and foreign objects. yep I guess they are all alike in that regard.

The horse I have will take the shortest path back to a trailer or a barn if you let him. I still can't find my way around the trails where I am for the summer but if I go out and then tell him to take us back he will but it will be cross country rather than a nice tidy path. Fun! I agree! Gail.

I hear ya about the scrathches and bruises..lol sometimes it looks like the tree or brambles or logs won the battle. lol That is my favourite part of trailriding, I make my own trails or explore the seldome used trails to see where they take me.

Looks like more people are coming clean about being older farts. Now we are up to 5 members. I had a business meeting this morning and had to explain why it looked like I had bruises all over my arms. I run into trees w hile bushwhacking and also get caught on brambles. Look rather black and blue!

LOL in my mind I AM 36, I just have to remind myself sometimes that I may need one of the neighborhood teens to help with the "grunt" jobs. I can't grunt like I used to but I can sure groan. lol I am just happy that I can still load up, head out and look after things when on the long hauls. I don't know what will happen when I can't do all of that on my own...but I take the same stand that Scarlet O'Hara took in "Gone with the Wind" ..."I can't think about the now, I will think about it tomorrow" lol
