Hi to all of you,
Now you have 8 members. I tried to catch up on all your notes. It looks like most of you are in Canada. Is there anyone on the eastern coast above Maine? We will be cruising in October from Boston. Would be great to meet and greet if any of your are nearby. Another thing I wondered, does anyone know of a riding place in any of the ports in either Portlane, ME, Bar Harbor, ME, St. Johns, NB or Halifax, NS? My goal is to ride every time I cruise somewhere. I have ridden in Hawaii, Mexico, Alaska. Ok here's my background.


I am fairly new here. I live in AZ, as some of you have probably read my other note, and am 61 yo. I was force-retired almost 3 years ago and I haven't done much since then. I think I was in shock after working my whole life.

I have 2 arab horses, 1 an aged mare (24 yo) still spicy and ready to go and a gelding that is 15 yo and not been ridden much. I'm working on him with a trainer. He's very spooky with me and I have lost my confidence with him.

I also have 2 Australian Cattle dogs that I love dearly and not necessarily in this order, a fiance'. heh heh!

I just visited my dear friend and my veterinarian yesterday and asked her if my mare was too old to start endurance riding again. This is kind of funny as I had been riding endurance and competitive trail for 7 years when I had met her just out of vet school and starting her first job. I took her on her very first endurance ride and the rest, as they say, is history. she's now doing multi-day rides and I'm not even riding. So my plan is to take it slow and easy (when it cools off maybe in September) and get my mare back into shape and maybe by next year I can do an LD ride (limited distance of 25 or 30 miles). That's my story. I feel like I'm starting my life all over again. Isn't it great!

It happened when I wanted lessons in dressage several year ago. He is also inclined to trot and I find it very comfortable. Will likely work on the gaiting as I have a synthetic Western saddle , next summer when I go back to Pleasure Valley for 5 months. That is gaiting heaven. GM Be sure and welcome our newest member. 7 members, we are multiplying like bunnies we are. lol
Gail I can't imagine wanting a gaited horse to trot, and keeping him in the trot, it like buying a Luxury car and never using it. lol But what ever works I guess. Have you ever borrowed some one elses saddle just to try it for the comfortable gait that you are missing out on.

Mine is a Rocky and I have used him for a trotting horse but he still does gait when asked. My dressage saddle is not set up for the chairlike positiion so I have to do it barback for best results. Gail.

Yes my two younger horses are Walkers. One is double reg as a TWH and KMH, he is 17 and has a laid back attitude. If he is out on the trail with another Walker he will keep up in the gait with no problem, but if out alone, he sees no reason to get all geared up for a gait or fast walk..."who me, you want me to do what" lol But I love him to death, he has such a great personality.
The 5 year old is not reg but of TWH blood and can rack like nobody's business. It does not matter if he is out alone or with non gaited horses or another walker, he just likes doing it. He is very energetic and also has a great personality. The oldest horse is one of the horses that I took to Alaska with me 15 years ago, he is 31 now. He was a great trail horse and has taken me all over N. America.

I did not know that you had a gaited horse. What about the younger one. Haying ie storing it is a nasty job at best. I am not sure I could handle that now. Too long at a desk job. You are talking about deer flies and mosquitoes. I hate them also but have not seen hardly any where the horse is now. The worst is the face flies. I could even hear them swarming around him today like a whole flock of something evil. I have been using the Konk on him this year and it seems to do a good job. When I move to the arena next month I know that their bush is full of both mozzies and the deer flies. I wonder what the difference is. I think Sunday is supposed to be like 40 degrees with the humidity. Too hot for me. GM

My one Walker is a real porker and I t hink that the younger one will be an easy keeper as well. I have not ridden all week, because of heat, and other priorities. I am still working in the hay. A hot and nasty and tireing job. I had company for lunch this afternoon, and have to get another dish ready for a get together tomorrow. I still have to finish the hay but think that I can do that. I will deliver the hay wagon on my way to the BBQ tomorrow evening. That saves me on an extra trip. Then I will have to go for a second wagon load next week. I am hoping that I will not have to unload this next wagon, since I do store the hay wagon in my barn for the winter. There is a possibility of a ride for Sunday afternoon. Some friends were inquiring last week about comeing out and getting a ride in which would be nice. NO bushwhacking involved on this one, the bush is still full of mosquitoes and deer flies, I hate getting involved with them if I don't have to.

Hey Eileen. I rode this morning for an hour and the horse is the only one getting any exercise as it is all hills at Pleasure Valley. It has been too wet for trotting or cantering so I am at winter weight ie yuck and he needed to lose 100lbs and has done that. What a good boy! Out with just a rope hackamore and no bit with his windchimes on the side. Beautiful to see! Gotta love him Gail.
