Cindy, As Tony the Tiger would say, "G-R-E-A-T!!!!
You can't retire from teaching yet, there's too much knowledge there to be wasted or not shared with others. This whole insurance and sueing situation is such a ridiculous burdon on people. You loose too much of your income and clients have to pay more for lessons so you can still make something after you take out the insurance. Glad to hear you are going to carry on & gracefully at that!! :-)

Thanks Shirley!!! Right back at you!!!! I want you all to know I am taking on another challenge. As some of you know I am a CHA Standard Instructor, well this year is when I have to recertify. I turn 60 this year and I spent several months trying to decide if I wanted to carry on or retire from teaching riding. I realized that in order to continue I needed to have insurance and insurance is expensive here in Canada, also more and more people want to see certification from riding instructors, I have seen clients go to certified instructors rather than non certified because they know they have been trained well especially in the safety aspect of things. So, I am taking my recertification June 24-28th at Birch Bay Ranch in Alberta. It's a 14 hour drive but I will have company for the trip there and back. Once I made the financial committment and registered the excitement began to build and now I am doing anything I can to be ready. Studying and working out, tightening up my core so I can balance better and my legs are strong. Gee maybe I can mount....gracefully :-)

So many challenges in life:
It seems being around horses alot keeps me in closer connection with younger friends and it amazes me how many of them have serious physical issues to deal with too. It seems each age brings with it it's own challenges and rewards.
It's great to have our friends here to share the difficulties and be heard and understood as we go thru our ever increasing problems of ageing. Sometimes we can share ideas of things to do to keep us where we love to be~~with our horses and on our horses and other times we can only share our caring & understanding thoughts for each other. But either and both are helpful. Sometimes just voicing our problems thru our finger-tips helps a bit too.
I'm thankful for this group of mostly ladies to share the challenges of each day with our horse dreams and desires.
Thanks 'BARNMICE' friends! I for one appreciate you!! For the most part this is a really great group.

I've mounted from the ground once in the past six months. It really didn't seem fair to the poor mare, but she stood patiently. Now I use a step stool. Besides having that help mounting really helps me save my oh so limited energy, as it is 30 minutes of riding exhausts me and I'm not really good for anything else the rest of the day.
Now comes the heat, 89F yesterday, 85F today. Graceful? No way, not with staggering and dropping things. Thank goodness the Arabs are smart enough to realize that their people cannot be perfect every day in every way! The Arab-Welsh I ride is not as forgiving, that is for sure!

So how are the "rusty riders" out there? I hope you are overcoming the stiffness and pursuing your dreams :-) I'm still at it and enjoying it even though I have to walk a little slower and misplace where I put things like brushes, blankests, tack, etc. :-) Mounting continues to be a problem, have resigned to using a mounting box and have found that once they get over the fear of the box horses like not having someone pull on them while they mount. Definitely not as graceful as I used to be in a lot of areas, I miss that. So, I keep walking and exercising and hoping that my hip will be strong again to mount with grace whether on a mounting box or not. :-)

Hi Riders,
I have added pictures of My Sienna Rose. When I bought her, her name was Philly, I changed it to Sienna Rose, because she has a reddish brown color to her fur. I know I sound like a new Momma, but I think she is beautiful!

Hi Laura, great to have you on board :-) I guess for me the best thing I can do is to keep moving. Currently I work at a tree nursery where we lift trees out of blocks and put them on an assembly line. It is active and muscle challenging work but it keeps my weight down, money in my pocket and muscles toned. It is winter here now and riding has slowed down.

Thanks for your encouragement Kelly I needed that :-) Yes B.C. is very beautiful, park like in a lot of ways but wild also. Telkwa is located 14 hours north of Victoria, on the mainland. Follow Highway 97 to Prince George, turn left and go 4 hours west and you will be in my neck of the woods. We have a very large equestrian contingient in B.C. especially north of the Caribou around Williams Lake. If you go to Google Earth you can find the place and zoom in to see what the terrain is like in delayed time. Gweek Riding Center is on there too.
