I have an OTTB - she's my first horse, and I actually bought her 2 months ago. Her name is Whisper, and she is the sweetest mare I've ever ridden. She lacks confidence, and right now we're working on slowing down - any tips other than circles and transition work to help an ex-racehorse to slow down at the trot (and eventually at the canter)?

Hi!
Just sharing about my 'rescue' horse...
Blue is an 8 year old grey mare who was rescued from the Vernon auction meat pen in 2005. No one knew why she was in there, but there she was, only 4 1/2 years old. She had never seen a stall before, and it was pretty obvious that she had been starved at some point in her life (she is very protective of her food!!) She was tolerant of the saddle, but a western trainer said she had obviously been trained english, while an english trainer said she had obviously been trained western. HAHA!
I've been working with her since 2005, trying all sorts of disciplines from competitive trail to hunter/jumper. Currently we are working on first level dressage. She's come a long way, and I'm proud of her!

I have 2 rescued Miniature Horses, Moses and Louie. They were originally not rescues. 3 years ago I was told about a Falabella breeder who had a perfect beginner show colt for sale. she had to get rid of him fast so he was priced very cheap. i had emailed the lady, asking for a picture. she sent me a picture of this colt (Moses) as a newborn and as a 2 month old. she told me he was 7 months old. so i decided I would buy him, sight unseen. i had a trailering service bring him home, so i had not seen him, his owner, or his farm. i got him and he was skin and bones, malnurished, full of worms, unvaccinated, elf feet, and matted coat. after looking at his papers i found out he was actually only 4 months old! i have had Moses for 3 years now and he truely is a diamond in the rough. he has been to many shows, doing rather well and i will be training him to drive this summer as he is now a coming 3 year old. My other rescue colt Louie came from the same place. this time i just wanted to get that poor colt out of there. we took a trailer up ourselves to see this place. the breeder would not let up in the barns or to see the other horses (we assumed they were in the same condition as Moses was). she brought out Louie who was a skinny, scraggly little yearling. she was literally dragging him down the driveway cuz he was never taught to lead. so we brought him home, fed him and "brought him back". he is also showing with Moses now and doing really well. Louie is a registered Falabella, his grandparents are from Argentina. Louie is now 2 years old and is getting ready for the Halter Show Ring this summer :)

I am currently riding two OTTBs that have been doing nothing for several years. One is a 16 hand 8 year old gelding - barn name Joey, and the other is a 15.2 hand similarly aged stallion, barn name "Boomer". Joey is for sale and is a doll ready for a training level test, working on 1st. He is also learning to jump cross rails and small jumps now. Boomer is a daddy of a new baby this year and will be a daddy next year to 3 new babies. He was formerly left to starve in a foreclosure; and saved by his current owner. Joey has also suffered from some dishonest boarding barns and a former owner who didn't feed him enough and has been a pasture ornament most of his life since retiring at 4 from the track. They are both great horses.

Hi!
Just wanted to share about my two rescues.
My first one we adopted from a horse rescue, she was skin and bones when they got her and still was quite skinny when we got her in november '08. We decided to adopt her anyways because there was just something about her and she looked like my moms first horse. Since we've got her she gained almost all her weight back, she looks amazing, and she's a wonderful happy horse, living the life she deserves.
My second rescue was a little miniature gelding. We received a call that someone would give us a 5 year old miniature horse for free who had been abused the majority of his life, we went to check him out anyway and what we saw was a terrified, muddy, shaggy horse standing in the back corner of his stall, eyes wide with fear. But of course i fell in love with him. We brought him home on new years day '09. For weeks we couldn't even halter him. Now he follows me everywhere, i can halter him, brush him, pet him everywhere. He finally trusts people again, and knows not to be scared. My passion for rescues has begun.

Hey ! I'm new here.
Just thought I would share about my 'rescued' mare.
I bought my mom a horse last christmas, who was meatbound. She is a 16.2 hh quarter horse mare, who was skin and bones and wanted nothing to do with people. I saw it in her eyes that she was a kind mare, and my mom has been wanting a horse but just never got around to looking. I saw this horse and knew that she was perfect. I bought her for my mom, and after about three months of TLC she ended up being the best horse my mother and I could ask for. She ended up being dead broke, and completely bomb proof and really safe. My mother didn`t think she could ever find a horse that could fill the void that she was left with after putting her best horse down over twenty years ago, although traveller hasn`t completely replaced `smokey`she is the first horse my mother has owned since him, and in a way, they helped each other get over their troubled pasts.
It was the best thing I have ever done, for my mother , and for a horse.

I'm looking to get in touch with people in the Edmonton, AB, Canada region who have "recycled" Thoroughbreds. I'm helping to organize an event called Horse Showcase that introduces the general public to different breeds, disciplines, sports and activities with horses. We have representatives from over 25 different breeds, but I would really like to do a spotlight featurette on recycled racers. We've got standardbred representatives, but I'm missing Thoroughbreds!!

Anyone know of anyone who can help me? Thanks!!!
