@Kathleen: I find that a strong two-point into a fence (don't lean too far forward with a speedy horse though!) can put you into a stronger position when it comes to being left behind. I agree with holding mane, but only if you can make certain it doesn't become a habit (I can't tell you how many times I've lost a rein trying to get my fingers untangled!!) But I agree with Ainsley that personal balance will help a lot. As will training your eye and using ground poles to prevent the huge spot. HTH!
