Excellent!!! I love looking at Tattersalls side saddles!

I totally understand about having one made...Hattie is such a hard fit and after looking at a whole bunch of vintage ones and the prices they were going for in the size I needed (and that was not even including the extensive work that needed to be done to them) that I got fed up and decided to spend the same amount of money and get one made. At least i know that it won't fall apart anytime soon and it fits Hattie!

Ack! So I get the tracing down to Marti at Hundred Oaks (who is just a gem) and she sold the only Elan she had that would fit us that afternoon! All she had for me was a Steele. Nothing wrong with that, but if I'm going to spend that kind of money, I figured I'd just get Betty-Lynn Tattersalls to build me my own. So that's what I've done! She'll start work on it in the next couple of days <3 I actually got to sit in my own saddle (well, the tree anyways).

It's all finally through so I'm working on a tracing of the new mare to send off to Hundred Oaks to get an Elan. I had previously bought a saddle made by "Royal King". Yep, it wasn't much different from those "Hilason" saddles. I learned my lesson!

What side saddle did you originally buy? What was wrong with it?

I remember the first side saddle I ever bought, an old Victorian one with a dipped seat which also turned out to have a broken tree!! I ended up selling it to a guy for a fraction of what I paid, who was going to make it into a bar stool.

With side saddles you live and learn!

Elans are very good side saddles. They are made in India but the lady who designed them (Marti Friddle), keeps very tight quality control on them so any duds don't get accepted.

They are built on proper side saddle trees NOT on astride trees with some pommels drilled in like all of the cheap side saddles you see on Ebay.

I was going to buy one for a hard to fit Arab I used to have.

Well very sadly the sidesaddle I purchased turned out to be a complete bomb. I've sold it and am waiting for my insurance settlement to come in so I can purchase an Elan. Anyone know anything about that brand?

Betty-Lynn custom builds sidesaddles that are unparalelled today! (Kay, I'm biased, I know Betty-Lynn.) But to be completely honest, this lady knows and has done EVERYTHING sidesaddle including reining!!! One day I WILL have one of her saddles <3 I'm just starting out (or will as soon as my saddle shows up) and am so excited! I didn't realize how many ladies are still riding aside and how many more are interested in trying it.

No, I haven't, I'll have to think about it. Luckily riding astride helps me learn how to recognize when I start losing my balance (my legs can feel where they are) and has made me strong enough so I can recover my balance when I walk on foot. It just that in EVERY book that has ANYTHING about side-saddle riding that I've read the authors INSIST that perfect balance is a prerequisite, or else the horse WILL develop a sore back. I really do not want to cause sore backs on the horses I ride. It is sort of hard to describe the lack of balance to someone who has good balance, but I used to fall (on foot, not riding) because my body did not realize it was starting to lean too much to one side until my leg gave away. No vertigo, no warning, just all of a sudden I was on the ground. Does anyone know of anyone with MS with balance problems who has become a successful side-saddle rider--ie. one that does not make her horse's back sore?
I must admit that I look at the pictures (especially jumping) and I feel envious.

Hi Jackie

Have you ever tried a western side saddle? I'm afraid I do not know much about MS but western side saddles are built more substantially (wider comfier seats) than english ones, some of the older ones even have side rails or off -side hand holds. You wouldn't be able to jump in one but they may work for trail riding.

Welcome Leila. It is wonderful that you found a riding solution for your physical problems.

Hi all! I'm happy to have found this group :) I only ride my mare side saddle now as I suffer from arthritis in my hips and back as well as the early beginnings of osteoporosis which makes "normal" riding uncomfortable and often downright painful. We have a side saddle lesson once every two weeks (LOL, all I can afford at the minute) and hack out, do low level dressage and have started jumping side saddle. We have a jumper show next weekend (but we'll only do tiny x-rails at it!!) and then an equitation show in June.

It'a an addictive equitation niche and my husband complains an expensive one but alot of my side saddle bargain buys have been found on Ebay or just going to tack sales/flea markets, etc.

Look forward to chatting with you guys! :)
