Hey, come on! Where are all those Standie owners out there? I know winter is kind of the slow time of year but I'm still getting some training in when I can. I want to get Monty into the Standie schooling shows this Spring and Summer so I've been trying to ride in between the rain drops.
Monty is coming along very nicely. His trot work is smooth a balanced and we are getting a good start on his cantering. He only paces now when he's stressed about something. We had a really good gallop on the trails the other day so I know he has no trouble with that gait. It's mainly his canter work now that he needs more confidence with. It will come, he is such a willing boy.
I'll let everyone know how he does at our first show!

Word is leaking out about the secret talents of the Standardbred-check out the November issue of Horse Canada Magazine article on them.

Wow! More Standies! I adopted my first Standardbred last Feb from Greener Pastures (then in Abbottsford, now in Langely) and I couldn't be happier with him. His trot work is coming along beautifully and his canter/hand gallop are emproving with every session. As for being steady on roads and trails, I trust him more as a 4 year old than I every did my 17 year old Appy. I do have one little issue I'm trying to work out with him now however. He gets empatient when in a horse trailor or stall and will start to kick if he isn't getting out of there quite as quickly as he thinks he should. If I had my own trailor I would just put him in and leave him in for a few hours but I don't. Plus I board him, so it's other people's property he could end up damaging. Not to mention it's just down right bad manners.
Any suggestions out there?

Congratulations to all the participants and especially their horses for showing what a standardbred can do in almost any discipline. The year-end awards have been finalized for the Ontario Standardbred Show Series. Three shows were held for the series.

Riders/horse combination must have shown in two of the three shows in order to be eligible for the year-end awards.

For the 2009 show series, the below-listed awards will be presented at the awards luncheon. The luncheon, which will be held at Grand River Raceway on Sunday, November 1 from 12:00 - 3:00 p.m., includes hot lunch, cash bar and awards presentations.

Tickets are $30 each. For more information, contact Kelly McLaughlin at 905-335-8115 or standardbredshowcase@live.ca.

For the 2010 show year, there will be five shows across the province. Dates will be published in the new year. In order to be eligible for the year-end awards, three of the five shows must be attended.
