Hi! I have an OTT Standardbred and I've never ridden a more amazing horse! I'm excited that you have started a group to promote them!

W. Brett Wilson, Canadian Entrepeneur and multi-millionaire, stated that on his upcoming "Risky Business" television show “We’ve got a guy who’s been a standard bred horse trainer and he is a hustler. This guy knows how to buy horses, run them and then flip them. So we’ll probably buy a race horse, run it in four of five races, and then we’ll see if we can make money by flipping it."

Is this horse exploitation for profit and suitable for national television?

Hello anybody!

Racing season is coming to a close and it's a shame how many good horses have no where to go.  I was down in the barns at Fraser Downs Race Track in Cloverdale, British Columbia and was offered a number of horses to take home, or find nice homes for.  I guess we are all familiar with this problem though or we wouldn't be so involved with the breed.

I'm trying to get the word out there.  If we all try to spred the word maybe some of these horses at least will get placed into a loving home!

Meanwhile my own Standie is doing very well and is all full of engery with the coming of Spring!  All we need now is for the mud to go away.

Is everybody still hibernating? Let's get going, Spring is upon us!

Went for a crazy ride on Sunday. I guess we were pretty lucky where I live as it was the most perfect day for a ride around the park and every body was feeling good. Perhaps too good.

All Monty wanted to do was go go go. He even got in a few bucks when he we wasn't getting his way and was also doing a lot of head tossing, which is new for him. I'm hopeing it's just Spring fever and with more riding and steady workouts he'll be back to behaving himself.

I was able to let him go for about 3 Km and he got into his pace and was just flying, but I never felt that he was out of control whereas I know that if I had let him get into a gallop he would have been gone. Lot's of stuff to work on this Spring what with my fear issues and his manners but now that the weather is emproving we'll get going again. Probably going to do some ring work today and a shorter hack tomorrow and we'll get those kinks worked out.

Happy riding everyone!

the site is looking great. Love the picture on the far left and the second one in from the right of the gorgeous dark bay boy, then again I may be just a little bias ;) I am really hoping it works out that Seth and I can come.

It's great that there are shows out there dedicated just to Standies. It's a good way to get them started.
Had a good training session with Monty last week, but we did have one little near accident at the canter (of course). He tripped over his own feet and we both very nearly went ass of teakettle. As I said to my trainer, the only thing that saved me was muscle reflex developed over 40 years of riding!
Monty is getting better at the canter but it is still his most problimatic gait. He can hold it for about half the arena and then he looses the rythym and just dosn't know where to put his feet.
Anyway, onwards!

wow I didn't know this was so active, i guess I should check my groups more often!!
Well, my standies are standing around eating hay at the moment, and lovin every minute! I'm taking my oldest, BJ, to a boarding barn here shortly so I can being getting him back in shape for the spring. I have been asked to do a demo at All About Horses in Lindsay, so we really need to get going. Also, new to the Peterborough/lindsay area, is Standardrama!! a horse show dedicated to standardbreds, that is part of the Ontario Standardbred Show series. Once the website is launched I will post it.
More updates to follow!

Hi Everyone:

My standrdbred mare is 23 this March. Have had her since she was 11, she was a gift from my sister after our son died of leukaemia at age 26... She is a very special girl, and helped give me a reason to live and carry on and get back to riding too ! She loves kids, will post some photos when I figure out how.
Cinderellie has a big walk and trot, I encourage her pace, I like it, and her canter is amazing. She didn't like to race, got very stressed and would quit eating, so after she produced a nice foal she was taken in by my sister as a rescue. * then my horse rescued me*
I am blessed to have her in my life. We don't ride much in winter, no arena, too icy where I board her, but I visit and groom and hang out with her and wait for spring !
In the past I have done a breed demo with her and lots of parades and fundraising trail rides etc. She had a fall in a trailer two years ago and refused to trailer for awhile but this past summer a friend helped me to retrain her to load and she does load and travel well again. *Chris Irwin method if anyone wants to know.
In my opinion standardbreds are great horses, tough and resilient and sensible.
For those who follow bloodlines my girl is a "Nero" daughter, she was born in Kentucky and came to Canada as a yearling.
Enough chat, enjoy your versatile standardbreds everyone ! b.
