Riders with Arthritis

In September 2011, I started experiencing the effects of Arthritis.  Some days are better than others, with manageable pain and moderate stiffness.  Other days it seems to be all through my body.  And of course, it can and has affected my riding.

I'd sure love to hear from others about how you are managing your Arthritis, what you are doing to feel better and tips on what works to help you keep riding comfortably.

I used to take Vioxx till it caused me some problems, then they banned it. Then I loaded up on ibuprofen, but that had its own problems too. So I have found a vitamin combo that seems to work better than NSAIDs without the risks, each element is important to get the total improvement I have so far. Vitamin C (time release, as your body uses it up quickly), D, calcium and magnesium, in larger amounts than those suggested by RDAs. If you haven't been taking these before the effect is not instant, but you should notice some improvement in a couple of weeks, and more in a couple of months. I only use tylenol occasionally now and I don't feel like I desperately need it, as I did when not on all these vitamins. I still do moderate stretches and exercises each day, and try not to overdo regular chores and exercise all in one day. I think I'm going to try Jackie's suggestion of the Evening Primrose Oil, just for the heck of it.

I find that the GLA does help some with general pain, no side effects.

A local feed store told me that some of their customers swore by Active-Plex Senior-- http://www.coxvetlab.com.  These people took it themselves as well as giving it to their horses.  This is a horse supplement.

Tumeric, a curry spice also available in pill or tincture also has good reviews as an anti-inflammatory.  It did not seem to help my MS but that is no reason why it could not work for you, by then I was taking the GLA and lots of herbs.

I'm glad you are getting a gentle horse.  I am even more glad that you are going to board him out, taking care of him at home would not be good for you, too much pain.

Capsaican (sp?), better known as red pepper has extremely good reviews as a surface treatment for pain, and taken internally it increases endorphins in the human body.

As always, check with your doctor or a doctor or good nurse that has some experience with this.  You DO NOT want herbs that interfere with medicines you are already taking!!!!!

Jackie & Nora, Not only do I have arthritis but am loosing all cartlidge between my bones. It is very painful to have bone rubing bone. I gave in and had a hip replacement in 2007 which I had to have completely taken out and another put in 3months later. Gees I would not recomend it to anyone. It sounds as if you have found something that works for you Nora. Is there any way to get that in pill form or herbs? Im not sure it would help me but with the rest of my body acting like my hip did Id just about try anything to avoid more joint replacement. I take alot of pain medication but that messes with my memory and God only knows what else. I have not had a horse for over a year and a half now but just added "Shammy the gentle Paint" to my family. He has not came to live with us just yet because I am looking for a stable to board him right now. I decided I would not spend my life regreting because of pain. It's the only thing I feel would make me feel worse than I do now.

Hi Nora, so sorry to hear about this!

I used to be mildly arthritic (osteo) but when I found out I had MS I started taking GLA, Gamma Linoleic (sp?) Acid.  This is found in Evening Primrose Oil, Borage Seen Oil, Black Currant Seed Oil, Hemp seed oil,and one or two others I can't remember.  The best food source is beef.  It is an Omega 6 that is anti-inflammatory (most Omega 6 promote inflammation).  After taking it over a decade my arthritis went away, but mine was minor.
