A Bit About Me and my Horse(s)
I've always been absolutely fascinated by horses, but I haven't always had the opportunity to be around them. As a kid I learned some western riding, then as we moved a lot, I didn't heave the opportunity to go back until a few years ago.
My second husband and I confessed a love of horses and we agreed that our home would have room to keep horses. Shortly after we got our home I began taking riding lessons. I told my husband I wanted to be comfortable with riding again before we hit the trails. I began learning dressage, another long-time dream. From the first lesson with Kellie Hart I was hooked and I began leasing a horse that one of her boarders had.
Shortly after I began this venture, I became ill with a very rare form of cancer and the horse I'd become attached too went up for sale. Rather than quit, my husband wisely said - NO - work out a deal, you need this horse.
As it was, the owners did work out a deal we could afford and I rode on and off as I could through treatments. I had 2 and a half months off from surgery and started riding again on January 1, 2005. I haven't stopped or looked back since! All I could do that summer was walk trot, but it was the best show of my life and one I will always remember. To top it off we won first place. Now that both of us are back in shape we've moved on to sitting trot and are showing training level seated this year.
In addition to Secret, we now have added Apache, a rescue who came to be Secret's pasture buddy. The vet thought his growth might be stunted, but this year he is learning how to take a saddle and he's going to be my trail horse. He's a great happy little appaloosa who is sure footed and never seems to be spooky. Our latest addition was Jak, a wonderful tall quarter horse for my wonderful tall husband.
Our goals for the future include a trail ride from the shore of Lake Huron to the shore of Lake Michigan and more dressage shows.
I also work full time as a graphic designer and advertising executive and my husband is a Service Manager for several apartment communities.

I'm glad the link worked and you wanted to join. Your profile picture is great! Very nice!! Looks like you have your tailor made jacket on too to go along with the blue ribbon. The majority of members are from Canada. Dianna from Traverse City that does the tuition workshops is a member. Anne Gage, the horse trainer, that learned from Chris Irwin is a member and so is Chris Irwin..."Horses Don't Lie" among others.

Are you looking on Craigs list? Seems like in this economy trailors would be easily available but it does not seem to be the case. You want one of those great big ones that you could live in, right? Wouldn't that be the life for 6 months or a year and just travel the country with your horses?! I know, "Dream ON"!! Be sure to get a three horse so I can come too....LOL
  • Shirley

Believe it or not...Jim mentioned this to me. It is true the horse people add alot to the economy and should be taken into consideration when they are doing all this cutting back. Some things like this should be able to support themselves too. Comes down to poor management as far as I can see. Sooo many of our political problems come down to poor management and it makes no sense to me. There is a lot of smart people out there why are things in such bad shape. GREED seems to be over-riding smarts these days. That is my opinion and I'm sticking to it...unless someone chages my mind of course. LOL
I wonder how Jean did on their boat launch. Weather wasn't too great off and on for that. Reflexology late afternoon today.
Cash was quite annoyed with the bugs last night.
I didn't get home till 10:30 from the barn. I was chating with a couple of people that I don't usually get to visit with much...very nice people.
  • Shirley

    Wow! Doesn't that look great!
    $3500? Ouch!
Are you seriously thinking about going?
It does look awesome and I'm going to look at it more tonight.

    This is sooo much information.
I need to look at what yu sent me yesterday about trails.
To be honest I forgot and then I just saw it agian when I was skimming my profile page over.
Boy the day sure did turn around...cloudy/nasty/rainy to pretty blue skies. I have sat here at my computer all day and not getting paid for it.
Found lots of good horse information. Im feeling a bit obscessed.
Cash was in such a wonderful warm friendly mood last night when I got there after reflex appointment. Maybe he was feeling good vibs from me too. It was just nice.
    More later!
  • Shirley

This page is coming up 'not available'. Would that be cause I'm a day too late? Bummer! I tried twice.

Did Steve just go on spring break to Virginia or West Virginia or was I told wrong? I heard they were going on a riding vacation.

What a night at the barn! I was lungeing Cash outside and did not have the fence closed. Cash was being very frisky and started pulling and bucking. I got him to stop a couple of times but he'd start back up and then he really took off. Can he run!!! Wow a power machine....He ran all around the barn area/ From now on he gets the Parelli rope halter and I get gloves and the arena gate will be latched. After we caught him and I settled we went back out and circled in a more respectable manner. I'll have to be more careful
  • Shirley

I used my rope halter and gloves last night. What a difference! He found his halo again. I rode in and out of the arenas, I led him much further around the grounds and he acted so much more contented.

Have you taken your horses for a drive in their new ride? How exciting!
  • Shirley

Good morning! Believe it or not!! I have woke up at 7:30 three days in a row which seems kinda nice but I'm sleepy all day. I like hearing the birds and feeling the coolness in the air. Between 10 and 11 the screaming starts at the day care. They always seem to have at least one bad screamer all the time. I'll try a half hr nap and see if that does the trick. If that would work I'd be happy. But I'm still getting only 6 hrs. sleep if I get to sleep by 1:30 and that time would be really good for me. I mean I'm not usually able to go to sleep until 2-3 so then 7:30 is way too little sleep. Anyway I'm not writing to talk about my sleep patterns.

When Cash got away, he caught me just right that I could not get my feet grounded so by the time I let him go he was pulling me forward very fast and I was about to go face first in the dirt. What really amazed me is how fast he can run. I knew he was fast but he went into a gear that I had not seen before. I don't think he did this gear even when he ran away down the lane last fall when he was sure something in those woods wanted him for supper. Both times he calms and turns and looks at me and heads back. I do like that but holy cow!
He was grumpy last night. We did ride longer in the outdoor arena and he was good but he just wasn't himself??? He was very contented the night before. I should probably get him started on the 'Sand Clear' again and I had just given him a dose of wormer. I think I gave him that just in time cause he was starting to scratch his butt and brake his tail off a little.
In case youi don't know this, don't use Quest. Some horses have died from it. Apparently it is too strong and is killing off too much at one time and sending the horses into colic.
I'm suppose to have a lesson with Colleen tomorrow. I MIGHT go to Pet Smart as a volunteer to help hold dogs and kitties to attract shoppers to adopt them. That's thru Red Creek Stable's rescue group.
I am hoping to visit Horse Haven soon. They are suppose to do tours on the 2nd Sun of each month. But that would be Mothers Day this year and I don't think that will happen. I was thinking about volunteering with Red Creeks rescue but they only have 2 horses and more dogs and kittens.

I'm glad you mentioned this. I haven't gotten the information you sent me looked up yet. I think I still have it. I got distracted with the 'horse slaughter' and 'Save the Wild Horses' efforts.
Rode Cash inside and outside in the arenas and then went about a third of the way down the lane "IN SADDLE" !! Felt really good and Cash acted great....like he'd been waiting to go.
I gotta share this...my two un-friends were at the barn today when I got there. I just spoke to them and went about doing my own thing and made an effort to do the opposite of them. Laurie did not talk to me till Christy was outside. Then she tries to be chatty? Anyway, Laurie left for home first. Sent me a text "Wow! You are really parked close to Christy's car!" When I left, I looked & had about a foot between her hood and mine and was nose to nose. That lady is crazy!! Even If I was an inch away, why would she text me to say something? Weird, weird, weird! Sometimes I wonder if she's just trying to bug me but I don't think that is the situation. I don't get it. But, she has certainly been a learning experience....I'm not sure what I've learned except for what the horses told me "Don't be too quick to make friends".
Yesterday she was telling me about this great idea she came up with. She was laying in bed worrying about a better way to divide her a.m. & P.M. grain baggies she preps. She didn't think 4 each in a.m. & p.m. pails was enough. (She'd bought the mini pails) So she bought a tote bag and put a piece of cardboard down the middle and put a.m. and p.m. on each side of the cardboard and said it would hang on her stall door just fine. She acted like she'd come up with a most magnificent creation. I did not pretend to be impressed. I think I said that will work but so would have the pails. A little later she came down and said she wasn't going to use the tote she was gonna use the pails. I just said either would work fine. The other day her cell phone jammed. She couldn't turn it off or call anyone. It was stuck with Christy's name and phone number on the screen. How appropriate!
Then Christy was complaining about all the good hay being gone. They are eatting the chewier stuff now. Cash really isn't too keen on it either but I don't expect that lush stuff all year round. I so wanted to tell her to go share her complaint with Brad. Then on this beautiful night she was niffed cause the girl that does chores wasn't there by 7:45. (She got there just before 8) Good grief the horses were happy to be outside a little longer munching on the grass that is growing in the pasture. I have a few more things I could share but this is more then enough to bore you. The good news is they are both going on vacation soon so I will have most of a week without dealing with them. Yeah!!!
