Hi Jen - yes, http://grandadventuresranch.com. Certainly life is never dull! We have only been here a few years and are in a very rural area, but are beginning to get client horses from further out and I do a lot of phone consulting. The boarding we do is "my way or the highway" - all holistic and no sweet feeds, etc. In fact, I need to go feed.... ggg
No, very few pellets. We feed round the clock bermuda grass hay and only augment with timothy pellets for those who just need extra calories or can't chew well (mostly older guests). When we feed grain we feed a tested-chemical free, pelleted whole grain mix by Dynamite. One to three cups can put weight on even large horses. I fed only 3 cups a day to my endurance horse who was training 60 - 100 miles a week. I avoid sweet feeds because of the sugar/and flouride in the molasses used to hide the taste of the cheap grain parts that they use.
What is your mill? I would love to add it to my list of resources on my website. Certainly what we feed is not cheap to purchase. But when we factor in how much less we feed to get great results, it is well worth it.
What makes a low-glycemic feed "sweet"? Maybe this is the wrong term? How about grain ration instead of sweet feed?
Jen - can you get me an ingredients list for your horse feeds. I see the different products on the website but no breakdown of ingredients. My concerns are things like "vegetable oils" etc. Do they use whole grains? Or fractionated parts left over from making human foods.
So glad to hear about the antibiotic free hog feed. My cousin's hog facility in Iowa needs something like that!
So it this machine pressed soy oil? Or a fractionated product? I am leery of soy because so much of it is a product of petroleum based fractionation. Glad you are not using canola or corn oils.
Hi there Jen,
I am new to this web-site and am not very computer literate. I am not sure exactly how this all works but am always glad to make a new "horsey" friend. What is your horsey story? I am a forty something mother of a 14 year old "horse obsessed" young lady. I rekindled my own childhood horse obsession five years ago when my daughter caught the horse bug too. I had horses in England growing up (my father is still a working blacksmith there!!) but never became the horse woman that my daughter in a few short years is turning out to be!!!
well I worked as an executive assistant for Magna International last, then the lay offs started happening and in the mean time I worked on horsefarms, garden etc. I like that you are an equine nutritionist, always been interested in that. I used to endurance race and was always in search for the perfect product, call me obsessive:) I am looking for fulltime or parttime, maybe even on a contract basis, I get along well with people, speak three languages, english german and spanish and just want something close to home. Arthur is about 20 minutes away from where I live, in between Grand Valley and Orangeville. I sincerely wouldn't mind if you keep your eyes and ears open for me. Thanks a bundle sabine
WAIT! Did I know you through a preivous barn maybe??? :)

I notice from your profile that you are from Southwestern Ontario. Me too! I was raised on a farm 1 mile west of Kippen, a tiny blink-and-you'll-miss-it village on Hwy.4, 5 miles north of Hensall, 8 miles south of Clinton. I usually say 40 miles noth of London as the crow flies. Went to school in Hensall, High School in Exeter, unviversity at Club Western. My daughter also attended UWO. I used to ride my father's Clydesdale work horses bare back starting at the age of 4. His "spare" horse and his & my favourite was "Belle", a truly gentle soul!!! In later years I used to drvie for a local family in Fair competiton Dress Formal Carriage. I also used to do a bit of barrel racing in southwestern Ontario Fairs. My daughter went to Bethany Hills, an all girls school where she had the opportunity to learn dressage for 1 of her 2 years there. Lucky lady! Can you share with me where you are from and where you practice as a Nutrionist? Did you attend u at Guelph? Take care! Sharon
