Weather hasnt been too bad all in all but recent weather has been cold and very wet. I still get out as much as I can. Ill be at the barn all day today.
I think this is neat. I haven't seen pictures like these since Gone with the Wind. I think it beats, hanging around the pub drinking beer. Although I suspect a good pint would go good afterwards.
I see by your schedule you will be in Milton in August. I live in Milton and would love to go over and see you guys. I will try and note on my calendar the dates, so that I don't forget. I bet the horses just love what you do. They look so anxious to get going.
Where do you guys get together to do this?
Mary-Joe
Hello there, I am sure it makes your heart pound. Unfortunately 15 and 16 won't work as I am up in Ottawa for the weekend.
But I will make sure I come up in August weekend to see you. Hopefully I won't be showing or at a dressage show. Let me know what times you will be at Heritage Park on those dates.
Cheers
Hi, Gary. Thanks for the comment & invite. In fact, about 20 years ago, I was part of another U.S. Civil War & Fenian Raid re-enactment group, an infantry regiment based out of Newmarket. I'd probably join your outfit if I weren't already riding and training with the Governor General's Horse Guards. Besides their musical ride, we also do skill-at-arms training, tent-pegging, and some World War 1 cavalry demonstrations. I'll keep you in mind, if I decide to get back into reenacting.
I just watched the video. Nice to have the video of your activity. The horses are obviously well conditioned to the sound of rifle fire, I noticed one rider firing right above his horses head and the horse didn't even flick an ear.
I also noticed the bugle. My Dad was in the Canadian reserves and had one just like it.
Thanks for the link to the site. It looks very interesting and I will have to look more into it. I think distance would prevent me from joining, but it looks like fun! Im going to keep an eye on your schedule and check it out when you are in my area.
It sounds really cool. And my grandfather would be thrilled if I did something like that! He wanted me join the military my whole life (clearly I'm not military material haha) He loves history and all that entails. But he's also the one who got me into riding as a child and he took me to all my lessons and paid for everything for so many years. If I did that he would be absolutely ecstatic! We'll keep in touch!!!
Thanks Gary, that very interesting - I am also interested in the US civil war, from a historical point of view it wasnt that long ago - I wonder if we have really progressed at all as a society other than technology
Many years ago I participated in English Civil War renactments- I was a Cavalier ( of course!!) Great fun and as a 16th/17th century history buff- gave me quite a connection to past events...
That's so kind of you to invite me to participate in your reenactments, but I'm really not interested. I love the idea of it but at 67, with an 18 year old horse, riding the trails is more our speed.
I will mention your offer and your organization at our barn.
Its not so much that either of us is too weathered. Its more that we are more interested in trail riding, dressage and jumping, in that order. One cannot do everything and I am too busy to add anything new at the moment.
I would love to try.I have one just retired racer that was very successful (and still very competitive) and a sometimes lame x-racer. Could we train with you? Perhaps one could just be hobbled in the area to make it look authentic? I think this is an awesome endeavor.
Thanks for the invite, I am still thinking about it, but I have a couple of task which require my attention before I can pay more attention to cavalry training.
That said, which two weekends in May were you planning to get together? I work some weekends, and have some commitments already, but I'd still like to truck my horse out to a practice, and see what we can do, whenever I can.
Thank you for the invite, are you ever involved with the re-enactments in Niagara-on-the-Lake? I used to drive the carriages there and loved seeing everyone dressed up and in character.
It was really good to chat with you on the weekend. Brought back a few memories (some good, some not so good).
I am very pleased to have had a chance to talk to you, because you indirectly solved a problem I had finding a piece of kit - the swivel hook on your carbine belt that I've been looking for for weeks now. It's exactly the same pattern as the British Dragoons used between 1765 and 1890, when they went to saddle-holsters for their carbines. Perfect for Napoleonic leather gear. Now I know where to get them.
Who knows? I might put on the Union blue someday soon (it is my second-favorite colour!)
Thank you for the invitation. I did know a girl who belonged to a group who annually re-enacted the War of 1812, and she participated with her horse. It was in Greenwood, years ago. I prefer a solitary ride- just me and my horse. best regards, Lynn
I'm sorry for your loss. I hope you can take some comfort in knowing that your good friend of so many years has been released into peace and is at rest.
Hi Gary, thanks for being the first person on here to say Hi to me. It's bizarre that you have the same last name as me in a way. I won't go into great detail here but my husbands last name was really spelt with one "s" but was changed over time. I will have to learn to navigate this web page, it looks very interesting.

Hi Gary,
Thank you for the lovely note on what you do with your horses. I think distance precludes my involvement but it sure sounds fun!
I will certainly check out your site.
There are no organized horse activities in my area so I am usually on my own.
