Hartly , if you dont have the money to care for two ,then stick to one. Regardless of whether you have room or not with out the funds you are not going to be able to look after them as you would want to. Cheers Geoffrey

Second Horse!

Hey everyone, I was just wondering: I have a horse (love him to bits and selling him is not an option) and I have room for a second horse. Money is a bit stiff right now, but I would love to adopt a second horse into my family. What are some ways around this that would help keep costs down, but allow me to keep my other horse as well? thanksSee More

A Bit About Me and my Horse(s)
Hello Barnmice!

Horses are my passion. I fell in love with them at a young age and have been riding as long as I can remember. I have had my first horse, Comet for 2 and a half years now! He is a 16.1hh bay warmblood. He is amazing, and I wouldn't trade him for the world. He is good at everything he sets his mind to, and we make the best team! We like to show english ( jumping) and just starting to get into the gaming for fun. He has so much potential and is the perfect horse for me!

Horse show SUCCESS! :D

Posted on September 5, 2011 at 10:38am 4 Comments

Hi everyone,

Just thought I'd let you know how the horse show went. We woke up bright and early to see lots of rain :( This unfortunately made getting him on the trailer a little harder. BUT thankfully he went on after about 45 minutes. We were a little behind schedule when we got there, but with the help of friends and family, everything went smoothly. I entered nine differant classes. An english turnout class which we placed first, a walk trot (for green horse) which we…

Lessons learned...

Posted on August 30, 2011 at 3:33pm 6 Comments

Isn't it crazy the lessons you can learn from horses? Just the other day I learned a really important one!

I have always wanted to show my horse. I thought this summer would be great to start. Everything seemed to work out quite lovely. I found a trailer to rent just down the road, I practiced with Comet every day and I picked out all the shows months in advance.

I spent a whole day with my friend (who would be my barn show hand) preparing for the show.…

Lessons learned...

Everyone has a journey. You grow up, your parents do absolutely everything they can do to relish your talents and help you find something you love with all of your heart. Everyone has a passion. One thing that you think of when you wake up in the morning. One thing that makes you want to keep moving forward, even when the end of the tunnel is pitch black. That one thing will be on your mind for your entire life. No matter what life throws at you, you will always have that one special thing…

If you have a place where you can do it safely try starting to lunge him in a larger circle. He is 16.2? He needs a bigger circle if he can get it. I know it can be really hard to find the perfect place to train--I went through it myself with my first horse 40 years ago, a green-broke 5 yr old just gelded chestnut Anglo-Arab. I had had several years of trail riding few years before that, but I was in no way qualified to handle and train a green-broke hot blooded horse! Still, I succeeded in training him although I could not afford many good lessons, and he became a wonderful riding horse, and could jump much better than I could!
So anytime you have a question feel free to ask me. Believe me, no question is too unimportant. You probably know much more about horses than I did before I got my first horse, you probably ride better that I did when I got that horse, and you CAN train your horse. You just have to learn how.

Hi Hartley, I forgot to tell you in the discussion that you do lunging in a regular circle, then run straight over the fence or cavaletti, then go several strides and do another circle on the other side of the fence.
Read some of William Micklem's blogs about jumping. He has some good stuff.
You might also want to consider small spread jumps, two or three poles wide, increasing in heighth, lowest in front, highest in the back. This gives the horse more time to successfully bring his hind legs up. Of course this will mean you can jump the fence just in one direction. William says that the single upright fence is more difficult for the horse to learn.
Just noticed your video. I can see your horse!

If anyone is looking for a fantastic horse (fiction) book to read....read Sundancer! It is about a girl named Bird and her horse Sundancer. :) Seriously best book I have ever read!
