The late medieval nobility turned dressage into a sport by giving public demonstrations of "horse ballets" to wow the commoners during public celebrations. They would do airs above the ground as well as movements on the ground. The late medieval kni…

There are horses that do not think the little fences are worth worrying about. Are you lungeing him over the jumps just in a cavesson, or are you using side reins too? Do you lunge over jumps with a saddle on? Do not use side reins (I am not saying…

Quite impressive. And you know the thing that impressed me the most is that though Mr. Oliveira wore spurs and used his leg aids quite a bit, I did not see the horse's tail lashing from side to side. MUCH more pleasant to watch than modern competiti…

Jackie, when you are mentioning Nuno Oliveira, I wonder what you think about his video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfiTTyi2He8&feature=fvw I want you to watch his hands. Closely. Watch the mouth of the horse at the same time. At those corner, w…

A horse licking its lips is for me a bad thing. I cannot avoid it all the time, but I try very hard not to upset the horse that much. Particularly when I practice very collectyed movements, like piaffe, or tempi, the mouth will get very active, and…

Not necessarily, Eva. When I use bitless bridles (cross-under, light rider, jumping cavesson), I get flexions of the jaw without the bit. There is no way I can demand a flexion of the jaw, but if I do my hand aid at the proper moment and immediately…

I did not read the book. But I wonder, how much damage is going to be done by following no.3 "3) The flexion of the jaw is the key to the entire horse."

Is your seat OUT of the saddle all during the jump? Do you make sure that your hands give enough rein so your horse does not hit the bit as he extends his head and neck during the jump? Keeping your seat bones in the saddle at any point during the j…

Over and over again I've read in books by cavalrymen that they had to compete internationally on second rate horses, as the BEST horses all ended up in private hands, however bad the private people were as riders. The cavalrymen were limited to the…

Hi Nora, I'm glad you like this bitless method. The chin strap does slide through, though when the buckle of the chin strap is centered it does limit the slide some. I set mine so that there is 2-3 inches from the nose-band ring to the rein ring on…

Enjoying the Horse's Gift, and Then Letting Go

I got to ride Mia twice this week, but, since Debbie wrenched her back badly, I didn't get a lesson. So I worked on things in my position that Debbie had been getting after me about, mostly making sure that my lower leg did not go too far back. Debbie DOES NOT like seeing the whole girth when I am riding, she wants my lower leg right at the girth. Of course Debbie is right. My wandering lower leg is a big part of the reason that the horses stopped wanting to keep contact with m

Cider Shreds My Ego and Mia Heals It

Last Sunday's ride on Cider did not go very well. I have been trying the Wellep Lever Cheek snaffle on her, seeing if I could use the bit while my hands deteriorated in the heat. At first everything went well, I used the bit through two stretches of 18 days of highs over 90 F and on Sunday we were into the third extended stretch of heat and high humidity. Two weeks ago I noticed that Cider was not reacting as well to the bit. On Sunday she lost all patience with me. All of a su

Another Blast from the Past--Caprilli on Contact

Captain Federico Caprilli of the Italian Cavalry, the originator of the modern jumping seat, left very few writings, just around 22 pages, that introduce us to the thinking of this revolutionary equestrian thinker. It is very easy to read these articles quickly and to sit back and go--oh yes, I know all that, but I find that deeper study has wonderful rewards. All the quotes in this posting are from "The Caprilli Papers" by Capt. Federico Caprilli, trans. by Major Piero Santini

Relaxed Fingers Dissolve the Resistances

This week Debbie was gone to some big show, so I had to ride by myself Wednesday. Waking up vaguely nauseous I got to the barn, groomed and tacked Mia, and with my husband's help got to the arena. Remembering my thoughts about last week's ride, we started off at a gentle walk, with SOFT contact, following every move of Mia's head. Mia rewarded me with a good walk, moving right on out with minimal use of my legs. Then two flocks of ducks started sparing in the adjacent pond, and

My Ambitions Cause Resistance

Lulled by previous successes, I started to make a serious mistake last week when riding Mia at Debbie's last week.

As you know, I have been doing an experiment this summer, seeing how long it will take for the two ladies I ride with to tell me that my hands have gotten too bad for a bit. Part of the reason is that I wanted to see for myself if the Wellep bit is truly an advance in bit technology or just another gimmick. Plus, its my

Thank you !
During the winter I work in Bariloche, the mountains are beautiful, however I prefer San Martin de los Andes, probably because the mountains are smaller, there are large farms and great opportunities to ride.
Hope you can come back some day!

Hi Jackie! I received an email from Barnmice and it prompted me to stick my nose into a few forums! I do love to teach and hope that people don't take my advice in the wrong way. My aim is to help people understand horses more and treat them like the sensitive and magical creatures that they are. Also, there's more to classical horsemanship than most people realize...it's for everyone, whatever discipline they enjoy!

You know, I bought an ice vest from Dover....Cool Medics is the manufacturer. I feel kind of clammy when wearing it but I guess it's better to be clammy and cool than hot and sweaty! I thank you for telling me about them!

How are you doing?

Hey Jackie.... thanks for the comments.... when my trainer said a few things to me like, he knows you don't trust him and you don't have a rhythm.... right at that time my girlfriend told me about getting the feel of the horse.... my time on the ground with Oliver doing relationship work makes me totally agree with you.... I think I can "think forward" and he will at least walk now.... he would nibble on my jeans more than actually bite at me... he's more curious and nervous I think than anything... he sure didn't want to go anywhere when I sat on him, lol.... can't wait to jump on again and see how we do with out new relationship... !!

If you can do it, I can arrange for you to get a Spirit Bridle and pay when you can.
Thank you for your nice comments on my position. Time will heal all things...I have found an FEI level dressage rider very interested in working with me so that is good. The nice thing about Spirit Bridle is that the contact is so light and easy to do, literally in ounces of pressure.
Once again I thank you
