and as for the word drive - allow me to state I mean the horse moves forward,, at a walk or a trot or a canter, and has his haunches under him, sending him , forward, just so there are no mistakes over my use of one word here or there.......:)

I love shoulder in and start with this in all warm up work and leg yields with the horse fairly straight- not bent in the opposite direction ever. Even in the beginning the shoulder into the corner and then up the 1/4 line, and driving forward, ever…

That is so interesting. My view is that when the horse is actively moving in front of the leg, the outside leg and inside leg merely suggest the angle of the direction of movement. I always ask for a few strides of shoulder in to confirm that the ho…

3 Simple Tips to Help You Straighten and Center Your Riding Position on Your Horse

Can you tell if your riding position is straight and centered on your horse? Or are you collapsing at your waist and sitting crookedly?

Ask a ground person to stand behind your horse.

3 Tips to Keep You From Leaning to the Outside in Half Passes

I think the main reason riders lean to the outside in half pass is that they use too much outside leg to push their horses sideways. So here are 3 quick tips to help you sit in the direction of movement.

1. Pretend there’s a seam running down the middle of your saddle from pommel to cantle. Then visualize yourself moving your outside seatbone onto that center seam so you don’t get left behind.

2. Think about actually taking a “step down into the inside iron” as you start the half pass.

3. Rem… Continue

Dressage Training By The Mile

Remember that dressage simply means “Training”. You don’t need to work in a regulation dressage arena to “do” dressage. Every second you’re on your horse, you’re either training or “untraining”! So you’re always doing dressage no matter what kind of horse you have or what style of riding you’re doing.

Think about how you can continue to train your horse yet add some fun and variety to his life.

Sit the Trot Better and Don’t Lose Your Stirrups

I have been giving a bunch of seat and leg position riding lessons lately, and we’ve discovered some interesting things about the correlation of the pelvis, lower leg, and losing your stirrups.

Does this ever happen to you?

Do you lose your stirrups in the sitting trot?
Does your horse slow down in the sitting trot or when you work without stirrups?
Does your knee come out over the front of the saddle when you’re in the sitting trot or canter?
Does it seem that the more you use your leg, the s… Continue

Inspiration from Indy too!

I am very good at catching things. I mean VERY good at it! It makes me feel good to snag flying tennis balls out of the air.

I’ve been swimming a lot too. I wasn’t sure I could swim at first, but I took a chance and leaped into the water. I found out quickly that I’m a good swimmer! Some things you’re naturally good at. Some things you have to work at.

Either way, doing something really well is very good for your inner being.

What would you like to do well? What would it take for you to give… Continue

Hi Jane, thought i;d pop by and say hello, this is a great place too isnt it ? loads of resources - being sick and not being able to ride means you get to explore places you dont usually get to! - you ready for that reunion?

Hi Jane. Many thanks for getting in touch and your support of the anti-Rollkur campaign.

I recently did a call about the issue with Klaus Ferdinand Hempfling over at http://www.DressageDisgrace.com and have another call coming up this weekend on the topic with Carolyn Resnick.

It would be great to be able to get you on a call too sometime, especially as you are so well known in dressage circles. Is this something you would consider?

It would be great to meet you anyway having also come across you via Jeff Walker. In fact, I saw Jeff speaking a couple of weeks ago and he still refers to it as 'ballet for horses' and openly admits to calling it dress-idj (not sure how one would spell his pronunciation!) in the beginning. LOL.

I look forward to hearing from you and apologies for the delay in replying.
Best wishes

Mark

Hi Jane - I have your Freedom from Fear tapes and they are just awesome! My worst fear was what might happen on a trail ride. I've used several of your techniques and today we went out on a hack with no prep work. My horse (5 year old QH gelding) and I led (which I never liked to do) and he was great. I knew he would be but I had to get my self relaxed enough to let him be as good as he can be!! Thanks so much!

Hi, Jane! How have you been? What is the best way to calm down my new 7 yr old mare? She is a rescue, a friend gave her to me. She is afraid if two or more men approach her, but is fine with one. She is usually calm, but once she is hyped up she is unreachable and unteachable for hours. She can run circles around a huge arena forever and still not be tired or worn out. She is a pale grey/white registered Pinto half-Arab. My grandkids can ride her bareback in my paddock without incident. It is when she is somewhere besides home she sometimes gets worried. She is very gentle, smart and beautiful. But like some Arabs , once she gets hyped up,it is whoa, babeeee!! Any advice on how I should work with her to help her? I have had her for 2 weeks. I plan to keep her forever and maybe do endurance with her in the future. She is 7 years old. Thanks, Jane!

Hi Jane,

Just wanted to thank you for your work at the Osgoode clinic - I was there auditing and managed to take a whole notebook of notes! Better than that, your suppling exercises are FANTASTIC and have changed my entire way of riding. Would you believe that now I can even "feel" where there's resistance - at the poll, neck, shoulder, withers OR hip? Although I always "knew" about these things, I now can feel them and better yet, have concrete techniques to work through them. It's completely changed my horses - physically and mentally - and that was just from AUDITING! Many many thanks!

Hi Jane,

Thank you for the weblink. I've been looking on your links page to see where it is and can't seem to find it. I usually represent the company name as: Equifitt.com Equestrian Fitness. I could send a logo if that were needed. Sincerely, Heather Sansom

ps. Dressage Today liked the piece with Ruth and the Equicizer, but I don't know when they will publish. I'll keep you both informed.

your book, "That Winning Feeling" has changed my life. It was recommended at a barrel racing clinic to me over 15 years ago. I have purchased it 4 times as I keep 'lending' it to people & they fall in love too. My husband outrides with the chuckwagons & it has changed how he rides & prepares. He repeats his mantra, "Fast & Strong" when he's getting on; he re-reads it every year during racing season.

Thanks for all your wonderful incite, you've truly made my life better.
