I've learned the hard way that horses don't need anything but hay. I think the feed companies have convinced us that horses need grain and supplements and pelleted foods, but in fact, if they have good quality hay, that's all they need. If the horse…

My rising 6 black Canadian mare is going to be for sale in the spring. I've raised her from 10 months old. She's a smaller Canadian, 14HH1 or 2 (?using tape), has been on many trail rides, is beginning to jump, trailers perfectly, good for farrier,…

I agree about the nets - tho I put one together using a hockey net for the times my horses are in stalls waiting for the farrier. My mare willl pick away at the hay in the hockey net while she waits - otherwise she sifts thru the shavings and that s…

Linda, I went to that Youtube site and those options are really great. Although I wasn't too crazy about the nets, I new a friend whose horse was left unattended and got her front leg caught in the net which was hanging too low. True it was one with…

Hi Ladies, Our hay boxes are the slow feeders. They allow the horse to graze with small amounts, and almost zero wastage. No hay on the ground. I will get back to every one on this shortly. These feeders are a British idea that I got from a really w…

I found out about slow feeders on another list, The Canadian Horse list. They give the horse access to hay 24/7,but the horse can only graze versus gorging it down via round bale or throwing hay 3 x day. There are many varieties, but I chose to buil…

What are slow feeders? I have never heard of them I don't think. My horses are out 24/7, don't vaccinate unless there is something going around or we plan to be showing or socializing with others ie. boarders, clinics, trail rides etc. Our morgans (…

Arrggghhh - it's worse than having kids! This is why I never read Equus - I can never sleep at night thinking of all the diseases my horses can get. Mine have access to warmed water 24/7, hay to be nibbled 24/7, and they live outside with access to…

Great to see more people discovering the SB as a riding horse. I think they are often overlooked when people consider breeds, and yet they are pretty sensible, come in all shapes, sizes, and colours, and often you don't have to sell your first born…

Let me count the ways they can colic. From what I've read here every one has covered it. My big guy has colicked from being cold. He also colicked in his stall over night for whatever reason and ended up with a loop of intestine over his spleen. He…

Wow - dealing with colic over a long time - I think I'd be toast. It's so stressful for you, for the horse. And you could spend thousands of dollars quickly. Fortunately, my mare seems to be just fine now. We switched from throwing hay 3 x day to sl…

we had the oddest, long time in recovering colic ever. my mare was just scanned in foal and we weren't sure if she'd keep the foal, but she did! the foal is small, probably due to breeding and the sickness. we treated the mare for over 6 weeks befor…

I admire tremendously both the eventing riders and their amazing horses. I jump judge at Checkmate which gives me the best seat in the house, and I am constantly impressed with how well conditioned the horses are - and how brave. Today's eventers en…

Kind eye, yes that is true, we had good horses at this facility. Only one was really very snotty and I am sure he's destined to do great things when he grows up. And I don't have any pics of him. I must get some as I still visit him and his mom at his new home sometimes.Hope you are having a great week-end. It's terribly hot and humid here.

HI Linda, Only one of these horses is mine. The rest are all horse friends from the training barn where I was hanging out as much as possible. The barn has recently closed but the trainers are still training at other places. Good for the trainers family but no one else. They were both really good at training and good to the horses so I hated to see some future horses not have them to go to. I was often the last one at the barn at night and like the Waltons show, I liked walking thru the stalls and telling them each good-night. I do miss that.

What lovely horses you have! My little haflinger mare is bred to a jack - so hopefully we will have a nice little mule next year.

If your horse is not showing or competing in anyway I would suggest not to feed her grain at all, especially if the hay is of high quality, no dust, lots of leaf, good mix of timothy and alfalfa. Also, certain types of morgans are very easy keepers,…
