Another thing to consider - get someone who knows about saddle fitting to come and check the fit of the saddle on her. A saddle that pinches can cause a horse to dump its rider or to avoid being mounted.

April, I constantly see a perplexed look on people's faces when I suggest Standardbreds are great riding horses. Good for you to get your horse out there - show them what a great breed it is. Re: prejudice, a few years back a neighbour's daughter to…

Thanks for posting that - beautiful!

Lovely image, Cindy. I never get that fine a feeling cleaning a house as I do cleaning a horse.

An old fellow I knew was still riding at 79 and he needed two people to put him into the saddle. Another rider, 86 and with two artificial hips, uses a huge mounting block. Who cares? As long as we can get onto the horse, just carry on. There are mo…

Just came back from a 2.5 hr ride at a friend's place - rolling hills, blue skies, few bugs. As usual, my good old Bellefille took it all in stride - white tail deer leaping out of the bush in front of us, crossing a dyke bordered by coyote dens, cl…

Good advice, sic2 and an important reminder that our horses may pay down the road for bad habits we tolerated.

Oh man, just one more #*%& thing to worry about. I swear, I didn't worry about so many scary things when I was raising a child. This is why I don't read Equus - each issue has 10 more things I think might go wrong with my horse.

Hi Becky - try contacting Roxanne who lives near Langley. She has always had beautiful sane horses and I know recently they had horses for sale. Her email is bearhollow@shaw.ca.

Go Canadians! Great P.R. for the breed, Frances - and fun too.

Holy smokes - lots of inspiration here - thank you all for those stories. I will stop my whining now when my back aches or my knees don't bend as well as they used to. Just get on with it for as long as you can - that's what I've learned from these…

Always build on success. If you can do as Karen says, or any other challenge, and do it successfully, pause long enough to congratulate yourself and him and build on it the next day. And when riding him - I sing a lot when I"m nervous in a situation…

Hey Cindy, I have Canadians and I'm sure you are aware of the Canadian Horse/Morgan connections. Glad to hear you have some of those Western Working/classic style morgans. Some of our Canadians were being "redesigned" too and we had to fight to main…

The original reason I asked about the weight thing was because a friend of mine who is not very tall, maybe 5'4", is a heavy woman and she always rides huge horses - over 17 HH because she believes she needs a horse that big to support her weight. S…

Kind eye, yes that is true, we had good horses at this facility. Only one was really very snotty and I am sure he's destined to do great things when he grows up. And I don't have any pics of him. I must get some as I still visit him and his mom at his new home sometimes.Hope you are having a great week-end. It's terribly hot and humid here.

HI Linda, Only one of these horses is mine. The rest are all horse friends from the training barn where I was hanging out as much as possible. The barn has recently closed but the trainers are still training at other places. Good for the trainers family but no one else. They were both really good at training and good to the horses so I hated to see some future horses not have them to go to. I was often the last one at the barn at night and like the Waltons show, I liked walking thru the stalls and telling them each good-night. I do miss that.

What lovely horses you have! My little haflinger mare is bred to a jack - so hopefully we will have a nice little mule next year.

The late medieval nobility turned dressage into a sport by giving public demonstrations of "horse ballets" to wow the commoners during public celebrations. They would do airs above the ground as well as movements on the ground. The late medieval kni…

There are horses that do not think the little fences are worth worrying about. Are you lungeing him over the jumps just in a cavesson, or are you using side reins too? Do you lunge over jumps with a saddle on? Do not use side reins (I am not saying…

Where did I state that medival dressage was humane and correct? I have stipulated that the SRS under Podhajsky presented dressage more correctly. I know who Kottas is and he is not a horseman! Podhajsky was a horseman and even General Patton was a h…
