Sometimes the increase in endorphins actually makes you feel physically better. I started riding at 53 and all of lap work tests improved and I lost weight with no other effort. I was just much happier and more active. BUT, if a person is in enough…

Right on, Barbara! I'm in my 50's, and for the first time am working out separately from my riding and chores (with Heather Sansom, and she's terrific). I plan to keep riding too, and this is part of the plan, along with a careful diet and suppleme…

I agree with all the people who say "never give up". Make changes if you have to- get a smaller horse, lighter saddle- if you love to ride do whatever it takes to keep going. I have had to make changes. I love hotter horses, jumpers, TBs and always…

You can't quit, I'm just getting started..... I am 49 and learning how to ride..... :) I try so hard to do things that will help with riding... first I started yoga, then I discovered a hula hoop.... it's sort of a dorky exercise, but if you try it…

I thnk all us horse folks are creaky at 55....either from horse related injuries, or bucking hay, or heavy but beautiful western saddles...my back is trashed. I think leasing is a smart option...lots of folks don't have time to ride their horse as m…

You are all most inspiring. I am still riding. Never gave up but sometimes it is harder. I am trying to get and maintain more fitness. I am sure that will help with the stiffness.

don't know, at 40 I thought I wouldn't be able to ride much, at 50 I feel terrific in spite of many injuries and arthritis and surgeries. I contribute it to Feldenkrais work, and I even became a practitioner because it saved me and got me out of dec…

Hi ,,,,,,,,, don't stop riding it is so good for you. I started riding at 53 and am now 60 ... have had Rheumatoid Arthritis for 15 years and I think riding is the best thing for it. Riding keeps you young and fit. Put knee braces on to help support…

One reason not to eat wheat. In certain genetic line (mostly Caucasian I think, but I can be wrong) there is a "mutation" that prevents wheat eaters from utilizing the calcium in their diets. Something to do with the effects of phytic acid. If any o…

My accupuncturist does a technique that is suppose to help desensitize the body from food allergies. We did this with wheat products and a couple of other foods that I didn't tolerate very well. It helped me..

I have some food allergies which make me creaky. When I am fairly strict about not eating wheat I am much better. I am not a celiac, just allergic to wheat. Allergy testing, or elimination diets can tell one if one is allergic and if not eating/drin…

Hey young Spring Chick..... I am 60 and going strong. Reading most of the replies to your question, I agree, DO NOT stop. When you admit defeat, you have lost the battle. My ole mare of 25 had bat arthritis and I made up a batch of medicine for her.…

partnership and courage

Against all odds; I am creaky, 55 yrs old; do NOT want to give up my riding my horse - my life has changed dramatically since I purchased him 3 yrs ago; working in one state living in another...no time for anything; he's been sick - haven't ridden for 9 months; want to just give up and sell him but no one will buy him when he's sick; really don't want to sell him; today's economy doesn't help as far as selling him; don't want to think about that currently; it would be the last resort. I can just… Continue

Hey Margaret. Since you left the message for me I'm sure the abcess has processed and well past. My advice to my clients on this is to wait until you have 3 consecutive days of soundness until resumeing a regular work routine. Until then a little hand walking and turnout is fine. Sorry for the delayed response but had been away. Stay tuned to Hoof Talk. All the best, Barney
