My friend's doctor told her to keep doing everything she had been doing to keep her body nimble - that the arthritis would get worse if she stopped. However, to answer the original question: When you no longer look forward to riding with anticipatio…

I would love to be able to purchase an Irish Draught Horse; alas, all my $$$ goes to the Thoroughbred in the photo! Maybe someday if my 56 yr old body holds up, I'll be able to find a sound one for free or for a small price....

Sometimes the increase in endorphins actually makes you feel physically better. I started riding at 53 and all of lap work tests improved and I lost weight with no other effort. I was just much happier and more active. BUT, if a person is in enough…

Right on, Barbara! I'm in my 50's, and for the first time am working out separately from my riding and chores (with Heather Sansom, and she's terrific). I plan to keep riding too, and this is part of the plan, along with a careful diet and suppleme…

partnership and courage

Against all odds; I am creaky, 55 yrs old; do NOT want to give up my riding my horse - my life has changed dramatically since I purchased him 3 yrs ago; working in one state living in another...no time for anything; he's been sick - haven't ridden for 9 months; want to just give up and sell him but no one will buy him when he's sick; really don't want to sell him; today's economy doesn't help as far as selling him; don't want to think about that currently; it would be the last resort. I can just… Continue

Hey Margaret. Since you left the message for me I'm sure the abcess has processed and well past. My advice to my clients on this is to wait until you have 3 consecutive days of soundness until resumeing a regular work routine. Until then a little hand walking and turnout is fine. Sorry for the delayed response but had been away. Stay tuned to Hoof Talk. All the best, Barney

There are horses that do not think the little fences are worth worrying about. Are you lungeing him over the jumps just in a cavesson, or are you using side reins too? Do you lunge over jumps with a saddle on? Do not use side reins (I am not saying…

Where did I state that medival dressage was humane and correct? I have stipulated that the SRS under Podhajsky presented dressage more correctly. I know who Kottas is and he is not a horseman! Podhajsky was a horseman and even General Patton was a h…
