Actor William Shatner has had his share of adventures as Star Trek's Captain James T. Kirk and Boston Legal's Denny Crane. Now he's climbing aboard a reining horse to put it through its paces, and help raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Oklahoma.
It shouldn't pose too great a challenge to the well known Hollywood actor and philanthropist.

Shatner is a longtime, dedicated breeder of American Quarter horses. He has had much success with the beautiful American Saddlebred, developing and riding world champions "Sultan's Great Day" and "Revival". He has won numerous world championships in several equine events.

Shatner will ride a reining horse at the 4R Performance Horses Celebrity Slide to help support the charity. He will try his skills at commanding the lightning quick moves of the horse while guiding it through a reining pattern and its precise manoeuveres on December 4 at the Oklahoma State Fair Arena beginning at 6pm.

He will be joined by the likes of Grammy award winning singer/songwriter Lyle Lovett, founder of one of America's leading fine jewelry companies David Yurman, TLC's Trading Spaces star Christi Proctor and Tulsa Morning Anchor Kristin Dickerson, who also have thrown their hats in the ring as celebrity reiners.

Shatner's passions for horses and philanthropy were united through his involvement with AHEAD With Horses, a charity that gives physically and mentally challenged children the thrill of riding a horse - and boosts their confidence and self-esteem, often with life-changing results.

For the past 19 years, he has hosted the Hollywood Charity Horse Show at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center. The event, held every spring, benefits AHEAD With Horses and other Los Angeles-based charities.

He has also worked with the American Tinnitus Association, raising awareness of the debilitating illness through numerous television appearances and interviews. In June 2007, he helped raise awareness of the sub-par treatment that many US troops were receiving at Walter Reed Army Hospital.

On an international level, he and his wife have started the William & Elizabeth Shatner Therapeutic Riding Consortium Endowment for Israel. This very special venture is designed to benefit Bedouin, Palestinian, Jordanian, and Israeli children so that in addition to healing, there will be an effort to bring the war-torn children together and start the first steps towards a lasting peace.

Most of all, Shatner is proud of the award he won in October 2009: Pacific Coast Year End Horse of the Year All-Around Amateur.

Shatner continues to act, write, produce and direct while still working with charities and further his passion in the equestrian sports. He and his wife and three married children live in Los Angeles.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Oklahoma serves children throughout Oklahoma and has granted more than 1600 wishes since its inception in 1987.

News for yesterday's results:

Toronto, ON – Olympic Champion Eric Lamaze brought his Gold-medal horse Hickstead across the ocean to compete in just one class at The Royal Horse Show this week, and it couldn’t have gone any better than it did tonight. Hickstead once again demonstrated he is in a class all to himself, exploding over the jumps with power and stamina unmatched in the arena this evening, if at all.

Of the 23 competitors to begin the $100,000 CN FEITM World Cup Qualifier, nearly half were able to complete the first round without adding penalty points to their score. And of the eleven who came back for the jump off, the only one close to catching Lamaze was U.S. Olympic Team Gold medalist, McLain Ward, who actually bested the time but pulled down the last rail in the process. Fellow American Lauren Hough was the closest clean round, stopping the clock at 37.53 seconds to finish up in second with her horse Quick Study.

“Whenever you really need him, he’s always there,” said Lamaze, always quick to praise the tremendous efforts of his partner Hickstead. “This maybe wasn’t the biggest competition he’s been in lately, but it was the most important, competing here in front of the home crowd like this. I really brought him for this class, to show him to people in Toronto who haven’t seen him for a while. This ring played such a large part of bringing him along as a young horse; to come back here after the Gold medal and Silver Team medal, it’s really exciting for me.”

Lamaze insists life hasn’t changed too much after his incredible Olympic achievement, that he keeps doing what he loves to do, and is honoured to be as well received at competitions in Europe as the other Europeans are. Not many Canadians are able to compete alongside, let alone in front of the best in the world. With his outstanding partner Hickstead, Eric Lamaze has shown he belongs just there.

Earlier in the evening, the Olympic medalists were celebrated with a special presentation in front of the crowd, honouring their accomplishments as well as thanking the owners of the horses for their support. Paralympic Champion Lauren Barwick was also celebrated, having contributed a Gold and Silver to Canada’s overall medal count.

Dressage becomes the focus tomorrow night at The Royal Horse Show, with the crowd-pleasing Freestyle to Music taking place during the evening performance. Following this afternoon’s initial round of competition in the FEI World Cup Qualifier in dressage, Olympian Ashley Holzer sits in the lead with her partner Pop Art. Holzer was the highest placed Canadian dressage rider at this summer’s Games, finishing in 13th position overall.

$100,000 CN FEI World Cup Qualifier
Rider / Hometown / Horse / Faults:Time
1.
Irish showjumper and world ranked number two rider Jessica Kurten has announced that she is not available for Olympic selection.

She told media yesterday that her horse, Quibell, was a bad flyer and conditions in Hong Kong might not suit the horse, who was currently out for possibly six weeks with an injury. Another of Kurten's top horses and a top Olympic hope, Castle Forbes Maike, has recently been sold. And she said that Castle Forbes Libertina had had a busy indoor season and needed a break.

Ireland has been allocated one show jumping place at the Olympics due to Kurten's high placing in the individual FEI Olympic rankings.

Irish Show Jumping Team Manager Robert Splaine said Kurten's decision was a pity, and she would have been a favourite. "Her performances over the last year have secured us a place in the Olympics and I am now focusing on selecting a horse and rider to fill that place.

"The reality is that riders need as much notice as possible to prepare for the games so I will be moving to make a decision on this quickly."

Horse Sport Ireland has called a press conference for June 3 in Kildare, and Splaine will announce his decision then.

Kurten is also facing a suspension, from June 7 until August 6, involving medication issues with Castle Forbes Maike, but she has appealed the decision.
