The coronavirus has forced us to cancel our holiday plans, reduce travel and stay local to help reduce the spread. This has been a terrible blow for tourism and hospitality.
But some commercial sectors are booming during the pandemic.

Home improvement and renovations are doing record business as people turn their attention and holiday budgets to improving their homes and surroundings.

Which makes perfect sense a holiday although good for the soul is fleeting but investments into your home reap rewards for years to come.

The same is true for investing in original art.
The cost is very often a fraction of a holiday - even less than a road trip. Yet you can enjoy the view for years to come and the art increases in value over time. If you have had your eye on a piece of original art - there really has never been a better time to make that investment and become an art collector.

Instead of buying artworks ( usually mass produced prints) from big box stores, look to support local artists and small businesses. Not only will you own a one-of-a-kind piece, but you’ll also be giving back to your community and supporting exceptionally talented artists.

I could mention my web site and promote my art - but this is really about finding a style and price point that resonates with you and taking the plunge to dive into collecting art. With so many talented local artists there really has never been a better time to buy original art.

But if you are curious and would like to check out my particular brand of art - my web site is www.LindaFinstad.comCoping with Covid19tag:www.barnmice.com,2020-04-15:1773158:BlogPost:8286032020-04-15T13:27:23.000ZLinda Finstadhttp://www.barnmice.com/profile/LindaFinstad

Government and health officials have made it very clear that we are all in this pandemic together and only by being apart can we come together and defeat the invisible enemy.

This has been a very difficult time for everyone both emotionally and financially. Like many people my ability to earn a living came to an abrupt halt with the cancellation of art shows, sales and all my workshops.

It was tough to earn a living as a full time artist before Covid19 and now it became a million times harder.

The lack of income was hard but to be honest as an artist I was accustomed to living on very little and empty food cupboards were nothing new. What was extremely hard to bear was the constant roller coaster of emotions that each new day brought. Some days I was filled with resolve in the knowledge that staying home, continuing to create art as normal was the right thing to do. But on other days I was so filled with despair and sorrow due to thousands of people suffering and dying I was emotionally crippled and could not even get out of bed.

So I decided to use my art as a kind of therapy and express my emotions through my paintings. Using coffee instead of paint ( times were hard and paint is expensive) I painted a coffee angel every day - I felt that a little divine intervention might help me to get through this. However my angels were not the stereotypical angels that you see on Christmas cards with slender bodies and flowing locks. My angels represented everyday people doing everyday activities. Some were chubby some were skinny I even threw a few kids into the mix. To release my feelings for the day I added words , quotes or notes to the paintings. Some were inspirational, some were sassy and defiant others I chose to use humour to mask the pain. The everyday angel project provided a way to express my emotional state in a tangible way and also to plot my day to day mood swings.

My angels may not have been sent by God but they were definitely a God-send to me.

The result is a huge collection of coffee angel paintings, I have posted them on my web site www.asharperimage.photostockplus.com if you would like to see what I created.

This project has changed the way I do art, it forced me to use what I had on hand. Going forward I have plans to use more organic and hand made mediums in my art. I will turn my attention to what is available in my own back yard and devise ways to create paints and pigments from what is in my immediate surroundings. The first challenge will be to make paint from what we normally regard as un-desirable dandelions and grass clippings. My yard also has a couple of bushes that produce berries which I am hoping can be used in the production of organic paint and inks.

After the long cold days of isolation it will be nice to go outside and forage for potential art supplies.
Everyday Art for Everyday peopletag:www.barnmice.com,2019-11-25:1773158:BlogPost:8274112019-11-25T22:41:46.000ZLinda Finstadhttp://www.barnmice.com/profile/LindaFinstad

There have been several scientific studies on how art enriches our lives.

According to Professor Semir Zeki, neurobiologist at the University College of London, when you stare at great artworks, the part of your brain that is stimulated is the same as when you fall in love.

I want to conduct a less scientific more grass roots experiment.

A simpler approach by asking everyday people to engage with me in a social experiment.

My goal is reach people who are perhaps not art experts or regulars at art galleries and museums. So I am sending out an open invitation to anyone who would like to participate.

Before you decide if the everyday art social experiment is for you, here is the overview

My name is Linda Finstad and I am an artist

Starting January 8th 2020 I intend to create a new painting every day for 100 days - yes that means I will create 100 paintings. The paintings will be a mixture of subjects and assorted mediums.

If you choose to participate, I will send you the painting of the day to your e-mail address along with what inspired me to paint it and how it was created.

At the end of the project you be asked to answer a couple of questions regarding the art and how it impacted your day. It’s that easy!

I am searching for 100 people to be a part of this social experiment. Who would be willing to receive a painting a day.

(no strings - no sales - no hidden agenda I promise) .

To participate and receive a fresh new painting in your inbox every day e-mail me Linda Finstad at hats@shaw.ca and just type Count me in in the subject line. If you would like to send me a message and perhaps tell me the kind of art or subjects you like that would be great but I know how busy everyone is - so Count me in in the subject line will ensure you are part of the Everyday art project.

Recently I came across such a competition run through the City of Edmonton (government) so I assumed it would be a legit competition. The call for submission was very particular it had to follow a theme and if your art was chosen as the winner the prize money effectively bought the piece.

Also they required a 250 word essay describing the art to accompany the submission. This competiton required quite a bit of thought and effort. However I was willing to do the work.

below is the little essay I wrote

Throughout the ages and recoded history of mankind, horses have played a very important role. Artist Linda Finstad believes that horses are the common thread that tie all peoples, regardless of country or creed. Her symbolic composition “New beginnings” depicts how everything in the universe must be harmoniously interconnected for birth and re-birth to take place. The golden stallion rearing up towards the heavens is representative of the sun which gives warmth and energy to all living things. The water raining down on mother earth - represented by the golden mare at the base of the painting provides the life force for the earth to thrive and replenish in perfect harmony. Although the painting is titled new beginnings it really depicts the circle of life which can only be completed when all elements work together for the greater good.

Everything was looking good until I read the fine print which read:

I agree, to relinquish all rights to the physical work of art and grant an irrevocable, perpetual license for the use of its image in promotional materials to the contest coordinators.

By entering the competition you gave up copyright of your work - I don’t know about you but I feel that is totally out of order and taking advantage of the artist.

This is not something author, artist , photographer Linda Finstad has ever struggled with. In fact as a young girl, when asked what she wanted to be when she grew up her response was always the same I really want to be an eccentric old bat - they seem to have so much fun and are allowed to colour outside the lines.

50 years later She is living the dream, Linda has always been kindly referred to as “one of those creative types”. She earned her living as an equine photographer and author however when she decided to retire from horse show photography she let go the need to create images that would please others and sell. When her livelihood was no longer tied to her creativity it allowed her to reveal her authentic self and let loose the eccentric old bat.

She focused on painting rather than photography and using all the colours in the paintbox developed a brand new style of equine art which she calls “Prism-Equus” this made up word means equine personality depicted in colour. Her brightly coloured horses were a hit and the new art term was added to the “Urban Dictionary”. Her paintings are extremely popular and sell almost as fast as she paints them.

For Linda the next step was obvious - if she derived her inspiration from horses perhaps she should paint a picture whilst riding a horse. This presented a couple of technical issues. Number one her paint brushes were not long enough to reach the canvas - easily rectified with a garden stick and duct tape. Problem number two Linda didn’t have a horse and hadn't ridden in over 20 years. But as the horse show photographer she knew lots of people who did have horses and it didn't take long to locate the perfect painting partner a part bred Fjiord called Sven. Finstad’s very first horseback painting took place at New Horizon ranch and was a huge success.

Creative Genius or just an eccentric old bat?

You decide.

Have you ever wondered why you like horses?

Hmm. “Like” is a very weak word to describe the connection 99% of horse lovers feel to horses.

Have you ever wondered why you like horses?

Hmm. “Like” is a very weak word to describe the connection 99% of horse lovers feel to horses.

Statements, such as horses are in your blood, and born to ride are common among horse people and understood at a core level.

Which begs the question are horses in our DNA? Are we (some of us) hard wired to carry the horse lover gene?

Artist / author and fellow horse lover - Linda Finstad believes this to be true.

Looking back through the centuries, regardless of spiritual beliefs or geographical origin of our ancestors one thing was at the core of most ancient civilizations. Something more precious than gold because without this one thing they would have progressed much slower and their lives would have been much, much harder. The common thread that binds us all regardless of race or creed are horses.

So it is not surprising that this desire to own, care for and understand horses is such a strong force in the lives of certain people. If you have this horse lover gene - you know exactly what I am talking about. Horses are not a hobby or a way to get some fresh air and exercise on the weekend. You feel a true (indescribable) connection to equines of all kinds, almost as though it is woven into your DNA.

I say don’t fight it! Embrace your heritage and certainly don’t make excuses to those “unfortunates” who are missing this magical strand.

Artist Linda Finstad is working on a collection of “Prism-Equus” paintings to visually display this connection between cultures and ancient civilizations. If you are aware of her unique style of equine art, you will know that she aims to use colour and shapes to portray the personality of her subject. In the “Prism-Equus Cultural Collection” she has researched the symbols, shapes and colours that were important to that culture and used them to weave a story into the art. On closer inspection, you will see a common theme - galloping horses are featured in every painting.

The style of these two painters are polar opposite, however they have one very important thing in common - they both were the originators of a particular style of art.

Way back in 1860 Claude Monet was one of the first artists to paint in the “Impressionist” style, he was quickly joined by other artists who formed their own society to exhibit their artwork after being rejected by the traditional French salons, who deemed it too controversial to exhibit.

Today “Surrealism” paintings and digital art are extremely popular but did you know it was all started by Salvador Dali back in the 1920’s with some very controversial work that shocked the art world.

Just imagine if you had the good fortune and vision to buy an original painting from those artists. They both developed a new style of art that later went on to inspire other artists and art collectors world wide.

I am sure you would agree that would have been a fabulous investment.

There is an opportunity to do exactly that.

You may or may not have heard of “Prism-Equus” it is a new style of art that has been added to the urban dictionary. This unique way of painting horses was developed by artist Linda Finstad.

The definition of “Prism-Equus” is equine personality depicted in colour. The style and definition along with acknowledgment of her work has made Linda Finstad the founder of a new style of art. A style that is quickly gaining popularity and one which she is teaching to other budding artists.

A quick google images search will reveal exactly what “Prism-Equus” looks like. This style may not appeal to you or fit with your decor. The same was probably said of Pablo Picasso’s work in those early days. However when you have the opportunity to buy original art from the founder of an art movement that has to be an investment worth making. An investment that could make you rich.

Linda Finstad is a world renowned equine photographer who spent many, many years capturing the beauty and grace of horses on camera. Her work in the field fostered a deep fascination for equine body language and communication which lead to her book “How to De-code equine body language” in which Linda Finstad uses photography coupled with years of experience and research Linda Finstad to reveal the secret language of horses.

Horses are complex creatures and their personalities are multi faceted, making it was impossible - using photography to accurately portray the horses personality in just one image.

Prism-Equus means equine personality depicted in colour.

Linda Finstad developed a style of painting that allows the artist to incorporate shapes and colours to depict the true personality of their horse. The philosophy behind her method of painting is that a horse may be one colour on the out side but on the inside he is a myriad of different colours (which may change depending on the day and his mood). Horse owners have been aware of this concept for years but until now there was not a word to describe it nor a way to portray it.

The attraction of this style of painting is artists of any skill level can accurately paint their horse or ponies personality.

Everyone know that for a painting to be considered “Art” it has to stir an emotional response within whoever looks at it. “My goal as an artist was to try and paint Joy. This is the emotional response I want people to feel when they look at my work. For me “Joy” comes in the shape of a horse (and cats lol). But when I look at a horse I strive to see below the surface and his outer beauty. I always pay close attention to his body language and listen carefully to what he is saying because I want to paint his personality - which very often requires all the colours in the paint box.” Each horse is a unique and magnificent masterpiece.

Why attending the

Painted Pony - Creative Retreat is as good as a Vacation

Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the fast pace of your life and endless to-do lists. Feel like you just NEEEED a break?

But with heavy schedules and commitments its hard to get away on a vacation, I hear you! Whether it’s impossible to take time off work or the many responsibilities at home with a family, for many people they don’t have the luxury to escape.

This got me thinking. “Me time” is key to well-being and we all deserve a few hours when we can truly center and reset our energy levels and if going away is not an option, how can a one-day Urban retreat help?

The magic that happens on longer retreats can be replicated in a day. How, you ask?

Here 5 reasons why attending a

“Painted Pony - Creative Retreat”

should be your next urban getaway.

1 It is all about “ME” time: Being able to disconnect for a few hours and think about yourself is not selfish at all; it is part of our “city survival kit”. It is relatively easy to escape for a few hours on weekends without work getting in the way and if you have children, having your partner or friends help baby-sit whilst you are away recharging your batteries. Taking care of yourself is the best way to make sure you can then look after others, may it be friends, work colleagues or your family. It also allows you to relax a little, which has immense health benefits.

2 Allowing a break from stress: Stress has been proven to be one of the most prominent deterrents for our health and we all have an abundance of it in our lives each day. Disconnecting for a few hours can have a hugely positive impact on our health. Especially when you include fresh air, horses and art. There are scientific studies to back up this claim. But who needs science to validate this obvious truth.

3 Meeting like-minded people: On a day retreat you will spend a lot of time with people who, like you, are there to find a way to relax, play with horses and discover their inner artist. Which means you already share a lot of common interests, in this fun non-judgemental environment it’s easy to make new friends.

4 Time slows down: The most fascinating thing I noticed on all day retreats is how time seems to slow down. City life is fast and I hear so many people (including myself) say that there aren’t enough hours in the day. Day retreats allow time to slow down because we are no longer worrying about our to-do list; we are living in the present!

5 Personal growth: Has so many stages even if you have never had any prior experience with horses by the end of the day you will understand how they communicate both to each other and also to humans. You will be able to identify and interpret equine body language. How cool is that! You will learn how to identify and paint your personal spirit horse. However to connect to that horse requires a little soul searching and reflection. The retreat includes instruction on Photography, Pencil sketching and abstract painting. Perhaps these are brand new skills or ones you would like to approach from a new fresh perspective.

There are so many more amazing benefits of spending a day at this unique retreat but perhaps the most appealing one is that they are practical and accessible to anyone, especially in a big city like Edmonton, where we so desperately need time off to reset and restart!

I know all event organizers say this but this time it really is true, the Painted Pony - Creative Retreat is an experience you will never forget.

You might jump to the conclusion, that they don’t have a Bible. But let’s assume theses teens and I will let all the adults off the hook for now, do have a Bible and in fact they also attend church.

They are filled with good intentions and know in their heart of hearts they ought to spend time in God’s word. So I ask you again why don’t they read the Bible?

The answer is little more complex however I stumbled on a simple solution.

Possible and very plausible reasons why people/teens don’t read the Bible include;

Teens have an incredibly short attention span (way shorter than toddlers) this is not their fault it is caused by rapidly changing technology.

They fill their schedule with school, homework, chores, sports and of course keeping up with the rapidly changing technology. So lack of time is another excuse and again a valid one at that.

The Bible is such a big book it can be overwhelming, again a valid reason

To read it from start to finish could take months - a commitment very few teens are capable of making.

The stories are confusing and its hard to identify with the problems Jesus solved for folks back then. It just doesn't seem relevant for their modern problems.

The writing is usually really small and there are no mimes or pictures so appears boring.

All valid reasons and non were connected to lack of opportunity or access to a Bible - there are lots of web sites that offer free Bibles. Acquiring the Bible is not the problem it’s getting them to crack it open and read God’s word that is the real problem.

So what is the solution?

I know there are lots of books that break it down into individual books of the Bible and offer explanations to the stories and text, many of which are fabulous. However this again requires a decision on where to start and commitment to read and if it is a study guide - perhaps answer difficult soul searching questions.

My solution is to take a leaf out of the “pre school” bible story books and include a lot of pictures and large text. Make the pages fun to look at and easy to read.

Make them relevant to the people who are avidly flipping through the pages by using something they are passionate about. Also quote from the Bible in bite sized nuggets that speak to the heart or give simple instruction for solving modern day problems.

My little books are designed for adults and teens who know they ought to spend more time in God’s word but with farm chores and animals to look after they just don’t have the time.

I saw a need for Biblical picture books for adults.

Maybe the question we should be asking is who decided to take the pictures out of books when they were written for teens and adults. After all many of us are visual learners and physiologists agree that images help with word association.

My little books are not a replacement for the Bible but perhaps they are a fabulous introduction to it by providing an easy way to soak up the promises and advice one scripture verse at a time.

My books are not for everyone they are designed specifically for horse people.

If you love horses you will love my books. They are filled with stunning equine fine art in fact it is the art that makes you want to turn the pages. Each book contains 100 pages of pictures coupled with scripture, making them a quick easy read. However the verses are very carefully selected to have the most impact. It is my prayer that my little books will spark a desire to learn more and tackle the “big book”. If you would like to see the whole collection visit;

Acknowledging horses as great teachers is nothing new.

Anyone who learned to ride on a pony will eagerly relay all the life lessons they learned from that experience. Lessons in patience, determination, how to fall and roll and humility.

But as we head into a New Year and ponder the possibilities it will bring, instead of letting go of the old. I want you to really examine your past because there is a gold mine of opportunities in your past experiences and accomplishments. That you can re-fashion and re-cycle to make your future absolutely fabulous

Horses more than anyone have taken what they know and used it to not only evolve from farm work horses into a vast array of fabulous show horses and world class athletes.

The plough’s and horse pulled farm implements are gathering dust in heritage museums, obsolete in today’s high tech world. However the horse is bigger, stronger, healthier and has way more opportunities than ever before in history.

As horse men and women we can, not only learn but be inspired by their example.

So how exactly do you do that?

Start by taking inventory of your life skills and resources.

It might be easier if I showed you how I changed my life by using what I already had

I am a horse woman - By definition means I am hard working, resilient and dedicated (well to anything horse related). But more than that I am part of a community of like minded people - we know who we are.

I am a Riding instructor - BHSAI - which means I have developed patience and people skills. Learned how to present information in a variety of ways that resonate with the different ways people learn.

I am a professional Equine Photographer - which means I have learned to still my spirit and quietly observe and capture what is really taking place. This was a hard lesson to learn as I like to be in control. I also have a huge collection of horse pictures.

My resources include - a reliable truck, computer, camera, phone, friends and contacts made at horse shows.

Notice a huge bank account and unlimited funds was not on the list - Sometimes necessity is the mother of invention and makes you more resourceful and creative. So lack of money is really not a problem.

So armed with this wealth of resources I used what I had to re-invent my life.

Step one I decided to write a book - “The Horse Watcher” answers to questions you never knew you had. This book focused on equine behaviour and communication, using my contacts and camera I spent hours and hours hanging out in fields with herds of horses observing, photographing and documenting their behaviour.

The book was fun to write and a huge hit, readers were intrigued to learn more about equine behaviour so I developed a series of workshops that delve deeper into how horses communicate, “How to think like a horse workshops”. Using my teaching skills and people skills I was now teaching at the front of the room and selling my book at the back of the room

My book is filled with beautiful photographs - using my skills as an equine photographer made this was easy. However I saw that as an opportunity - I could share my knowledge of equine photography and equine behaviour and combine it into a workshop to help budding photographers. I developed four different photography workshops using my computer and phone to promote and fill the classes.

I only used what I already had - there was no need for loans or sponsorship

I have gone on to write three more books, and develop workshops and courses to go along with them. My life and business has evolved to meet the changing times.

I hope my story inspires you to take stock of skills, life experiences and resources that you already have and use them to evolve and prosper.

Visit www.TheHorseWatcher.com to learn more about my books and workshops.

Why write a Horse book?

For myself, the question should be “Why Not write a horse book”

For the best part of my life horses have filled my thoughts, dreams and aspirations.

I learned to ride at the tender age of 4, competed at horse shows, studied to become a British Horse society riding instructor, even judged at horse shows.

So there is certainly no shortage of subject material.

For the past 15 years I have earned my living as an equine photographer, covering horse shows, events and hundreds of private equine photo shoots.

So there is certainly no shortage of images to use in a book.

Now I do not consider myself to be anything special, I never rode at the Olympics or photographed the queen’s horses in the Royal Mews.

But I do like to think of myself as “Extremely Inquisitive” others have a less than flattering name for this character trait. Nosey Parker is one that immediately comes to mind. However I choose to take that as a compliment and it was exactly the kind of quality needed for the creation of my latest book.

“The Humans of Horse Racing”

The premise for the book was simple enough, photograph all the people who are involved in horse racing at Northlands Park and tell their story.

How hard can that be?

Horse Racing Alberta issued me with an all access license to the back stretch and a couple of introductions to a trainer and the head “out rider” and after that I was pretty much on my own.

I figured the best way to get to know the people, what they do and how they work was to spend lots of time at the track. Not just on special race days but every day starting at 6 am, which is when most of the people at the track show up for work (some start even earlier).

Even at this early hour the barns are buzzing with activity, horses are being tacked up and led out to the track for their early morning gallops, others are tied to the horse walkers to stretch their legs and move their muscles - similar to doing 20 mins on a tread mill. Grooms are mucking out stalls, filling water buckets and hay nets. Trainers are lined up against the track to keep a watchful eye on their equine prospects. The out rider is primed and ready for action as he watches the young horses, he is looking for signs of possible run away’s or jockey’s in trouble. The tack store is open for business and the farrier is gathering his tools for the start of his rounds. The office and support staff start a little later.

It quickly became apparent that horse racing is like a very elegant jigsaw puzzle and it requires ALL the pieces to create the finished picture”.

The perfect recipe for a book that gives readers a glimpse into the private - behind the scenes look at horse racing.

I don’t want to mislead you into thinking writing a book is easy .

But if you are an equestrian you have all the qualities needed to complete this task.

You are accustomed to hard work for little or no reward

You always get back up when you fall

You can take criticism without feeling crushed

You are not scared to get your hands dirty.

Most important of all - You never give up.

So you have everything needed to become a writer.

The Humans of Horse Racing is my fourth book and I know I have at least two more books inside me just waiting to get out.

I hope you feel inspired to take your knowledge and unique experiences and write a horse book.

Either Directly or Indirectly art has given me more than the gift of beauty and inspiration.

Art has connected me to some amazing people and some of my most treasured friends.

My preferred art form and one at which for the past 15 years I have earned my living is “Fine Art Photography”. Not just any fine art photography, my specialty and number one passion is horses. Although this might seem a very niche area in which to specialize, if you look hard enough it is possible to find not only an ample supply of subjects to photograph but also a large clientele who are willing and eager to purchase the images. like most people who are passionate about their craft I was also eager to share my knowledge and experience by offering equine photography workshops. Of course these were not the usual kind of classroom workshop - One session involved a field trip to a ranch to photography a herd of 80 horses in their natural environment, and to stay safe in that situation the attendees got a crash course in equine behaviour before heading out to meet the horses. Another workshop took place at the race track where we created a photo journal of “track life”. Which is something I have inside info on as I literally wrote the book on “The Humans of Horse Racing”. Other workshops were hosted by large equine facilities who would supply humans and horse models.

But this is not the purpose of my story - What happened at these workshops was more than just learning to take photographs of pretty horses I got to know some pretty amazing artists. Some came to the workshops to learn how to operate their fancy new camera’s - some came because they loved horses and wanted the opportunity to get up close and personal with them. Others came to deepen their understanding of equine anatomy and how horses naturally move, so they could paint them. This group of people “The Artists” not only fascinated me but also excited me as we could discussed “how to see the light” and how the varying temperatures of light reflected and changed the colour of the horses coat. They really understood the importance of not only light but also how shadows add dimension and form. Although I was the teacher they were able to put into words what I instinctively calculated in my mind when composing a fine art photograph. I had found my “tribe”.

One of my new Artist friends invited me to go with her to a painting class at Masters Art Academy. Although I had never held a paint brush since kindergarten I eagerly accepted the invitation and I am so glad I did. Svetlana Kanyo the art instructor is kind and extremely patient, but guess what - I met more people who are excited about art, fellow kindered spirits and new friends. Art really is the glue that holds society together it gives everyone something beautiful to focus on. My advice to anyone who want to find where they fit in this jigsaw puzzle we call life - turn off the TV, and join an art class, it may be painting, pottery or even photography just tap into what you are passionate about and that is where you will find your tribe. Art connects us all.

If you are an instructor, coach or trainer your knowledge and expertise is Gold. It is what sets you apart from all the other Instructors, Coaches and Trainers. The experience you have gained over time and perseverance, the insights you have learned through trail and error are priceless.

However, your reach - the people you can help and inspire with this hard earned wisdom is limited to time and travel. Unless you somehow record all this knowledge and share it with the world.

Writing a book is the easiest way to do that.

Ok that was a very flippant comment because we all know writing a book is hard. That is why only the experts do it or people with tons of money who can afford to pay someone to write it for them.

But it doesn't have to be - if you are a horseman or woman you already have many of the attributes needed to write a book

You know anything worth achieving takes time and work.

If you are writing about horses - odd’s are, you know your subject matter inside out and have already spent a life time on the research.

You are used to family members questioning your sanity.

You are passionate about your subject and want to share your passion with others.

You have been dumped on your ass more than once and survived to get back on and try again (essential quality of a writer).

Horses have taught you patience and humility so asking for help, when you are stuck is not an issue.

You know how to communicate your ideas and methods to others.

You need to find ways to earn residual income ( keeping horses is not cheap)

What if you discovered a secret formula that would help you organize your thoughts and ideas - create an overall view of your book including the chapters and what to put in each one.

A Formula that would teach you how to take your book project from “once upon a time - to The End “ in just 40 days.

I discovered this formula and it helped me create 3 books

The Horse Watcher

How to Butts on Seats or Saddles

and Don’t shoot the Horses

These titles are available on Amazon and provide me with a very nice royalty cheque every month.

I feel as though I may have at least two more books in me, and plan to use the cold winter months to cosy up in my little home office and work on those.

If you feel like the time is right for you to put your thoughts on paper and publish the book you know is inside of you.

Come to my “How to write a book in 40 days” workshop

Have you ever had, what you thought was a fabulous idea - yet everyone around you shoots you down and tells you “Don’t Do It”.

The “naysayers” tell you it’s a crazy idea that will never work, it’s just not done. It’s a waste of time, effort and money. They try to crush your dreams.

Maybe they have a valid point of view, they may even be right.

This was the advice Linda received when she started not just noticing but photographing “Equine Expressions”. For most of the time horses have a soft docile expression but if you watch very carefully you will quickly become aware of just how many facial expressions they are capable of. These “faces” range from the good, the bad to the downright ugly.

Fascinated by the variety and sometimes ferocity of these fleeting glimpses of equine personality, she started to capture them on film.

At the risk of damaging her career and reputation as an equine photographer Linda has published what her peers told her to delete in her new book “Don’t Shoot the Horses”.

She broke the unwritten rule amongst equine photographers that insists you “never ever photograph a horse with his mouth open, teeth bared, ears pinned ” looking mean or angry. Popular consensus is that you must strive to capture that moment when the horse rounds and softens, exhibits a pleasing outline and expression. After all, those are the kind of pictures owners want and will pay good money for.

Her friends and family told her not to do it - and if you must capture those expressions please keep them to yourself and don’t show anyone. You will only offend people.

Should Linda listened to their sound advice?

Or follow her gut instinct to record and publish the truth?

What would you do ?

It’s no secret we live in the information age.

In fact we are bombarded with “information” every day in the form of e-mails, messages, pop up ads on-line courses and pod casts even blogs.

#Life Hacks - How to Attract More Customers to your Tack Store

It’s no secret we live in the information age.

In fact we are bombarded with “information” every day in the form of e-mails, messages, pop up ads on-line courses and pod casts even blogs.

I am sure much of the information contained in them is good and useful but it’s just Too Much.

Human contact and personal interaction is becoming more and more elusive maybe its convenience or maybe it’s a cop out.

So how can Tack store owners use this information to their advantage?

Simple - Go Old School

Offer free information seminars at their tack stores

featuring “Real Live Experts”

Topics can range from:

Saddle fitting

Understanding Bits

Equine first aid

Hoof care

Equine photography

Equine dentistry

Massage therapy for horses

Equine behaviour

Finding “Experts” to talk on these subjects is easy - you are probably friends with a vet, farrier, equine therapist, show medic all of whom would jump at the chance to showcase their knowledge from your store.

By offering free info seminars you are giving your customers a reason to visit your store and socialize with other horsey folk.

It provides the perfect opportunity to invite prospective customers / riding school/ livery barns/ pony clubs/ associations to your store.

Include a break in the talk to allow for shopping in the store.

This truly is a win win for everyone.

I know this works because I have given several talks at tack stores.

On average my talks attracted between 20 - 35 people.

I had a chance to showcase my skills and services

and the store had a bumper day with all the increased foot traffic.

They are willing to work long hours every weekend for sure, in all kinds of weather. Very often for extremely low wages.

Yet they love their job and wouldn't trade it for any other career.

I know because I too was a riding instructor.

I studied for three years to prepare for the BHSAI exams (the instruction was not cheap).

But I passed and attained the qualifications which now ranked me as a Riding Instructor.

Woo Hoo

But the training lacked one vital ingredient

How I could use this certificate to actually earn a living

There was no Lesson plan formula - Business plan or Marketing blueprint to help me get started in a highly competitive area.

In reality, I had no job and no clients and no idea how to turn my passion to teach into a business.

The good news is - I figured it out and I am sure you have too.

But looking back I realized I could have worked a lot smarter rather than harder and also

capitalized on many opportunities I just let pass me by.

The one Area that I completely ignored was teaching “Equine Behaviour and communication”

Although this area fascinated me I just didn't know where to start.

It certainly wasn't part of my riding instructor curriculum oh sure lots of the information was covered in my training. And a lot of the equine behaviour was stuff I took for granted as a horsewoman. After all I had been around horses all my life.

Bingo - that is the opportunity you are missing out on

What you take for granted as just general horse sense is fascinating information to people new to horses and also very important information that will help keep them safe.

Hidden opportunity - Equine behaviour and communication is a subject that appeals to horse lovers of every discipline and not just those who want to learn to ride.

I was surprised by how many of my students parents wanted to learn about equine behaviour.

I am so confident that you can earn money and expand your lesson program by adding Equine behaviour classes I am offering a Free Lesson Plan

The introduction to Equine Behaviour

Just head over to www.TheHorseWatcher.com to download the lesson plan and Discovery cards.

Sounds too good to be true

Well it isn't

And I am going to explain how you too can increase your business without the expense of adding any more real estate - Horses or extra staff.

I know there is a demand for this kind of knowledge and lesson program

I also know people are willing to pay for this kind of instruction

I know it works because I tested it with real paying clients.

Over the winter I offered 6 “How to think like a horse” workshops

I charged $89 per person for an afternoon class

The smallest class I taught had 8 students and the largest had 30

most had somewhere in-between

I made between $700 - $2600

just for talking about what I love - horses

I made $10,000 and only worked 6 afternoons

I have more workshops Scheduled for 2016 - this is something I can repeat over and over using the same materials and lesson format.

My name is Linda Finstad BHSAI

I guess my greatest claim to fame is that I wrote a book.

The horse watcher Answers to questions you never knew you had.

In fact this little book took on a life of its own and changed the way I not only view horses but also how I make money.

And its not through book sales believe me. I would need to sell thousands of books just to make a couple of hundred bucks if you will excuse the pun.

But before I get into how this little book changed my life I want to give you some background of who I am and how I got here.

I started riding at age 4 , went through pony club, competed at county level shows on show ponies and hunters. After leaving school I studied at Wrae green equitation centre for 3 years for the British Horse Society teaching exams.

So armed with my certificates I set out to earn my living as a free lance riding instructor.

What that really meant was I had no job and no barn to teach out of. However I was young and determined and managed to pick up a few private clients.

I was doing what I loved but barely making ends meet. Which was OK whilst I was living at home with my parents but certainly wouldn't pay a mortgage.

I totally get - how hard it is to make a good living in the horse industry.

But lets back up a little to the book I wrote The Horse watcher

I thoroughly enjoyed the research as it involved spending hours and hours sitting in fields observing - documenting and photographing horses just being horses.

But the more I observed and discovered the more questions I had so the research took way longer than I first anticipated 2 years in fact.

I also wanted to compare and contrast the natural behaviour of domestic horses with that of their wild cousins to see if man’s influence had changed their natural way of being.

But still I had questions - so I devised a number of equine experiments to help answer them.

These were fun experiments and no horses were harmed in any way in fact I think the horses quite enjoyed taking part especially in the ones where food was involved.

So I finished the book and got it published Yea!

However I got to thinking, someone should teach this stuff

There are plenty of places where you can learn to ride and many barns also teach stable management.

But very few offer a courses in equine behaviour and communication.

So using my research I put together an introductory

“How to think like a horse” workshop.

My biggest challenge was to find a way to allow students to discover for themselves the mysteries of equine behaviour in a classroom setting.

I needed a fun way to include all the students and get them involved in the learning process.

After all no one wants to listen to me drone on about it.

The workshop was a huge success

In fact many of my students were so intrigued by equine behaviour that they wanted to learn more.

So I created an Advanced equine behaviour class where we would delve deeper into the equine psyche.

I got to thinking

Maybe other riding instructors could also make money using my lesson programs, discovery cards and equine experiments.

If they were presented in such a way

That anyone with a little equine experience and teaching ability could follow and facilitate.

If I could design all the tools you need to teach a lively and challenging equine behaviour program. That can be taught in a classroom ( no need for any horses)

That allows you to teach large groups of students

(which means you can make more money)

I spent 6 months re-designing and expanding on my own workshops to create a full 9 lesson program that other riding instructors can use to increase their business and attracting new clients.

The beauty of teaching equine behaviour is:

It appeals to horse lovers of ALL ages and disciplines.

Topics covered are:

Equine personality

learn mirroring techniques that enable you to communicate with your horse

The secret life of wild horses - Herd Dynamics

Delving deep into the psyche of natural equine behaviour

FREE Marketing action that really works!!

It works because it's FREE

That “Free” word really grabs our attention – that is because we all like to get something for nothing.

It is a universal fact of life – no exceptions.

So how can Equine Business owners use that knowledge to their advantage and ultimately increase their customer base and bottom line?

Good question - I am glad you asked.

You are going to give something away to your potential customers, don’t worry its not going to cost you a dime.

You are going to offer

FREE Guided horse walks

Allow me to explain

This past summer I conducted a couple of Guided Horse walks at “Whitemud Equine centre”.

It was a very simple activity that we promoted on Facebook the riding school web site and with a sign at the end of the lane. Which read

FREE guided horse walk tonight at 6pm (wear sensible shoes)

Meet up at the main gate

Around 15 people showed up for the walk

I introduced myself and explained that as we walked around the facility I would teach them a little about equine behavior because although the horses look like they are not doing anything other than standing around in a field - really there is a lot going on if we choose to look a little harder.

The walk started at the isolation pen where I explained why the horse was there and why he was upset at being separated from his buddies – this was also a perfect opportunity to talk about the importance of not petting the horses so as not to spread any nasty bugs. From there we went to the field (the group stayed on the outside of the fence) and I explained a little about herd hierarchy and pecking order and to demonstrate I threw a couple of slices of hay into the field. The more dominant and high-ranking members got to eat first and the lower horses in the pecking order probably didn’t get any.

As we continued our walk I talked about how the horses were used and some of the programs offered at the riding school.

I also threw in some fascinating little tid bits like how much poop a horse produces in a day (the little boys love knowing about poop) and how a horse see’s the World, and also his blind spots.

It was a pleasant stroll around the property and by the end of it several of the families wanted more information about riding lessons for their kids.

This was great PR for the riding school plus we gained couple of new clients.

But lets pretend we did the same thing at a horse rescue facility – as well as teaching equine behavior we could be talking about the goals and dreams for the rescue and how much it costs to keep a horse - maybe sharing a few special stories - by the end of the walk you might have people wanting to get involved and help either financially or by volunteering their time and talents.

Or maybe you are a horse breeder with a new crop of Spring foals - most city folk have never been up close and personal with a foal - you could talk about the weaning process and how old they have to be before they can start work - perhaps show them the stallion and talk about how he is used and kept.

I know of one breeder who has an adopt a foal program – for $350 you can adopt a foal for 1 year - you don’t own the foal but you can come and visit him under supervision brush and lead him - this program is aimed at kids - and guess what after a year of adopting this foal they are now in love with him and want to buy him - and a well handled polite yearling has to be worth way more than a weanling.

As you can see with a little imagination horse watching and free guided horse walks

Can increase your revenue.

It’s the soft sell approach - if we can get people excited about horses and eager to learn more this can only be good for the industry as a whole.

Plus a sign on the gate with dates and times (we didn’t spend any money on advertising)

· At the designated time and meeting point we handed out “what to watch for when horse watching” field guides. These photocopied handouts gave the visitors clues on what to look for, very similar to a “bird watching” field guides.

· The horse watching field guides are free to download from www.thehorsewatcher.com

· Our walk started at the isolation paddock where we explained why the horses were there, and why it is so important not to touch or feed the horses (a perfect place for some safety tips). We also talked about why the horses in quarantine looked sad – how they are herd animals and crave the company of other horses and general information on herd dynamics.

· Then we strolled along visiting the horses different paddocks and fields (we stayed outside the fences – not actually in with the horses)

· We taught the visitors interesting facts like

· How horses are able to sleep standing up

· Why some horses had blue eyes

· A horses unique range of vision and of course their blind spots at well

· How to tell if a horse is sick

· How much food and drink a horse needs in a day - and also how much manure they produce (the little boys love poop facts)

· All these tidbits of information are in my book “The Horse watcher” but I am sure you know all this stuff already

· In the last paddock we visited we threw in some hay for the horses – so we could talk about the pecking order and how the horses communicated using facial expressions and body language. To determine who got to eat first.

· The walk / talk lasts for about an hour

· “Pony Portraits” lastly we had a very quiet and cute pony available for the visitors to take pictures with - if they wished - this was very popular with the kids

· At the end of our tour we thanked them for coming and hoped they could see the benefit in the work we were doing with the horses and asked for a small donation. (Everyone gave! the smallest donation was $5 and the largest was a $50 bill) Not bad for a gentle stroll around the facility after supper

· On average we attracted 25 – 35 people each time

I am sure the visitors told their friends and shared some of their newfound knowledge - which is why we like to include some quirky snip-its of information.

Like: Why you should never look a gift horse in the mouth

And Why are bad dreams called nightmares

“Guided horse walks” introduce the public to the facility and educate them about horses. The more informed visitors are ,the more empathy and desire to help they exhibit.

Some of our visitors also asked about volunteer opportunities, as they would like to get more involved. Which gave us the opportunity to mention our wish list of projects - like additional field shelters that needed building and the endless chore of painting and repairing fences etc.

I hope you find this idea useful

And if you do decide to implement it let me know how it goes

Don’t forget to download the Free field guides from
www.thehorsewatcher.com

God bless you for the work you do
Saving one horse may not change The World
But it changes Their World

Horse People are a Little strange?tag:www.barnmice.com,2015-03-21:1773158:BlogPost:7645292015-03-21T14:29:03.000ZLinda Finstadhttp://www.barnmice.com/profile/LindaFinstad

There is Bird watching and Whale watching so why not put a name to something horse lovers have been doing for centuries – watching horses.

However its more than just spotting a horse grazing in a field – Horse watching is focused on watching with intent.

That intention is to gain a better understanding of how they behave and communicate with each other. And ultimately understand why horses do what they do.

Lets form a movement and claim it as our right as horse lovers, to also be known as “Horse Watchers”.

Its fun and free – you don’t even have to own your own horse its;

The Only equine hobby that doesn’t require deep pockets and big bank balance.

You can watch horses at equine events, show jumping, dressage, eventing, barrel racing, horse racing, polo all of which are free to attend. Some equine events require a small cover charge like rodeo and chuck wagon racing.

There are still bands of wild horses, in various places around the World. Embark on an adventure and seek them out.

Linda Finstad is a self-confessed horse watcher.

She spent 2 years sitting in fields, with herds of horses as she gathered research for her book “The horse watcher - answers to questions you never knew you had. Observing, documenting and photographing their natural behavior her field work answered some questions but forced Linda’s inquisitive mind to probe even further to discover the Why’s.

Eight Reasons Why "Horse watching" rocks

1) It sharpens your sight. Before you know it, you learn to spot the Alpha female in a herd, or the poor soul that is bottom horse in the pecking order

2) It encourages you to explore the world. Horses are everywhere and each continent has its own indigenous breeds, some even have herds of wild horses to discover.

3) It gives you something to write about. "Dear Mom, How are you? It snowed here the other day, but the horses don’t seem to feel the cold, the snow is piled up on their backs proving their thick winter coats are providing insulation.

4) It makes you an authority in the neighborhood. People you have never met will tell you about horses they have spotted in fields. That is “beautiful” you really must go check them out.

5) It helps you to treasure a moment - that June evening, for example, when you watch a mare and foal gently grooming each other. Or a horse rolling in the dirt with such abandonment, as he rolls and squirms to ditch the itch on his back.

6) It provides you with opportunities to enjoy the countryside, fresh air, gentle exercise all of which ultimately improve your health.

7) It makes you politically active. You will form an interest in not only spotting and watching wild horses but also fight to save them. Once you have observed wildies, its impossible not to be smitten. They are the epitamy of success – Wild, free successfully living on what nature provides.

8) Finally you have discovered something very special that is Free

Now that is news worth sharing.

For the past two years I have been working on a huge project

“The Equine Heritage Exhibit”

The purpose of this project was to create a permanent record of all the breeds of horses in Alberta.

It was entrusted to me – to locate – photograph and document as many as possible over two years. My original list had 40 different breeds, however by the end of the project I had photographed 60 different breeds of horses that are actively being bred here in Alberta, plus documented over 25 different disciplines outlining how Albertan’s enjoy their horses. This was an incredible journey for me personally, I met some amazing horsemen and women and photographed an array of fabulous horses.

For those who don’t know me – I was born and raised in rural England, so I knew the Queen was an avid horsewoman and as a frequent visitor to Alberta – Canada, I thought she may be interested in this project. So I sent her a letter.

I couldn’t believe it when 8 weeks later I got a reply

This is what she wrote:

Dear Mrs. Finstad

The queen wishes me to write to thank you for your letter and the present of the DVD “The Horses of Alberta” which you sent.

Her Majesty was interested to learn that you undertook to photograph the enormous variety of horses that are being bred in Alberta and that this record will eventually be held in the Provincial Archive Museum.

It was kind of you to send The Queen the DVD of this project and Her Majesty is grateful for this thoughtful gesture.

I am to thank you once again for writing as you did, and your loyalty good wishes are greatly appreciated by The Queen.

Yours Sincerely

And it was signed - by her lady in waiting.

I was thrilled - especially knowing how many letters and parcels must be delivered to Buckingham palace every day.

One question I get asked quite often is, "Where should we go for our portraits?" To help with planning your outdoor portraits or family photo session, here are a few suggested photo locations from Edmonton and area, including both indoor and outdoor spots for great pictures. Of course this is by no means an exhaustive list, but it is a great place to start! If you have other suggestions please let me know
My personal favorite photo back drop is the Whitemud Park

There are some great locations - interesting trails, bridges and access to the river front - the going is sometimes a little uneven so wear comfortable shoes.

Great opportunities whatever the season

Alberta Legislature
(Outdoors open free to the public; indoor photographs are not permitted.)

The Alberta Legislature grounds is one of the most popular - and populated - parks in the city. With amazing variety of mature trees, beautiful architecture and plentiful flowers there are abundant photo opportunities here. There are often other weddings on the grounds as well as tourists, but there is so much space this rarely creates a problem.

Some of these location charge a fee, for formal photo shoots like weddings so please check out their appropriate web sites to see their rules and regulations regarding formal photo shoots

Royal Alberta Museum & Government House
Contact: Administration at (780) 453-9100

The Museum grounds and the Government House are very popular for wedding photos. An excellent blend of landscaping and architecture provide lots of visual variety within a relatively small area. This is a public park, so there is no charge to use the grounds or building exteriors for portraits.

Citadel Theatre
Contact: Administration at (780) 426-4811

The Citadel theatre has a large indoor garden featuring an upstairs lake and a waterfall wall. An atrium upstairs may be rented for indoor ceremonies. Daytime sessions are best as most of the interior light comes from their large windows.

Edmonton City Hall
Booking Clerk: (780) 944-7740

City Hall is a beautifully designed building with a selection of railings, pillars, staircases and smaller features which keep portrait backgrounds interesting. A high-key (light) colour scheme dominates most of the interior. Most days the interior is fairly quiet although on a nice summer day the fountains outside do attract waders.

Devonian Botanic Gardens
Contact: Bookings at (780) 987-2496

Although this is an outdoor-only location - and a bit of a drive too - the Devonian Gardens provides almost unparalleled beauty and variety. The Japanese Garden is the most popular section, featuring a waterfall, bridge, lake (with stepping stones), walkways, and varied foliage for a wonderful variety of beautiful photo locations.

Fort Edmonton Park
Photos site - www.ftedmontonpark.com
Contact: Phone: (780) 496-8787

For a stunning historical look to your portraits Fort Edmonton offers an amazing variety of beautiful locations. The river valley setting and the many different faces of this facility add a unique character to your portraits. Some churches and buildings on the grounds can be booked to add character to your ceremony or reception.

John Janzen Nature Center
Phone: (780) 496-2925

Located right next to Fort Edmonton Park, the Nature Center offers a varied natural parkland for beautiful photo opportunities. A bridge leading over a small pond leads into a system of nature trails which are great places to spend some time exploring - and taking pictures!

Muttart Conservatory
Contact: Bookings at (780) 442-5311 or muttartquestions@edmonton.ca
Cost: see details on website
Beautiful any time of year, the Muttart Conservatory contains four indoor gardens of differing style. Lots of flowers, indoor waterways and bridges, and paths through the greenery make for excellent photographs. I have used the grounds for family photos and pet portraits

Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village
Contact: (780) 662-3640 or email uchv@gov.ab.ca

Very few locations in the Edmonton area bring out the sense of history and beauty that you will find at the Ukranian Village. Just 20 minutes from Edmonton city limits, the trip is very reasonable and the results are worth it. Unique photo opportunities and a rich historical character to the park all make for an enjoyable visit.
