Saddle Fit Tip #2 - Saddle Fit and Wither Clearance

I have to revisit this topic again because the last time I posted on this back in the early fall, we got so many questions that it became clear that a lot was still unclear! So – take II! (and this time with a video, which will hopefully enlighten a bit more).

Wither clearance is an often misunderstood concept. All of us are concerned that our saddles have adequate wither clearance and do not pinch our horse’s withers. But few of us truly understand…

Adoptable Horse of the Week - Hopeful from Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society

Hopeful is a grade dun mare approximately 10 years old. Hopeful was discovered abandoned with two other

mares, and were emaciated.
She is friendly and likes attantion. She's had kids on her back and

did fine when being led by an adult and she doesn't mind having an

adult sit on her back, but she's not broke to ride and did not know how

to move out with someone on her back. She's ready for someone willing

to…

"Pony" Switcheroo

Well Pixie is solidly broke to ride and just needing some final polishing that can be accomplished quickly in the spring. Heather, the pony rider, informed us a couple of weeks ago that she was going back to school (always a good choice!), so we would soon be without a small, lightweight rider for starting ponies.

Quickly we switched Dijon for Pixie at the indoor arena. Again he's been backed over the last 2 years and has maybe had a week's worth of riding - nothing…

At the Tack store.....

So the other day I inoccently wandered into a local tack store and ended coming out with a new sheepskin half pad, a set of jointed irons, new leather riding boots, and a new bit for Summer.

Its funny how no horse person can ever go into a tack shop without spending $200 and up! Mabye its the new leather smell, or all the shiny objects..lol Its like we go into the store just needing a rubber martingale stopper and then suddenly we remember we need a new show bridle, a new show…

Being Without

To be with or not to be with. The question matters not when there is but one answer, not to be with. Horses, that is. Can't physically care for them and can't financially afford to care for them besides. Catch-22 of being disabled, degenerative disk disease.
I just appreciate my cherished memories of riding. Perhaps one day...a smooth gaited horse won't hurt my back hopefully.

More, Please

Today is a special day. Exactly one year ago today, I brought Samba home. That is a day not to be forgotten...the excitement of getting a clean vet check on a horse you've already fallen in love with, loading onto your (or in my case, my trainer's) trailer, and settling your new horse into her new digs. What a great day that was.

Today also happens to be the three-year anniversary of the day my wonderful husband proposed marriage, while we were waiting for dessert at an…

Mental AND Physical

When horses feel safe, comfortable and have enough food and water to sustain them, their next need is stimulation. Your horse needs to be stimulated both physically and mentally on a daily basis. As with many other things when working with horses, you need to… Continue

Help Your Horse By Sitting Evenly On Your Seatbones

You can help your horse stay in good balance by sitting evenly on your seatbones.

Here’s a cool image to help you make sure you’re part of the solution instead of part of the problem.

Imagine you're sitting on top of a basketball.

If you lean forward, the basketball shoots out the back.

If you lean back, the basketball shoots out in front of you.

If you lean to…

Sense of Freedom for Horses

I had an unusual life growing up in the desert with horses. Our horses were able to run free most of the day in a herd and go where they wished. They were loose and there were no fences to keep them from doing exactly what they…

Cowgirl

Daily Oats: Food for the horse lovers soul

“COWGIRL”

©2008 Michael Gasaway

“Horse lover”, “roper”, “can chaser” or “barrel racer”, all of these and more she has been called;

But “Cowgirl” is the term she likes best of all.

It describes her right down to a tee you see;

From her earliest childhood memories, it is what; she’s always wanted to be.

From her Stetson down to her boots n’ spurs, oh how she looks the part;

But her real cowgirl… Continue

My herd of favorite horse lover's quotes

Daily Oats: Food for the horse lover's soul

This is a collection of quotes that I have used on the Knot-A-Tail Facebook page. Most of them are mine, but a few others have joined the herd as well. I hope you enjoy them.

Within the warmth of my horse's breath, I will find the air that I need to live today, I will find the wind to fly to the heights of my dreams, I will find the one I am meant to be.

As I gather my horse's mane and get ready… Continue

How can I keep my hands quiet? The Secret Lies Below your Navel!

Question: When I ride my hands bounce up and down at all the gaits. Not a lot but enough so I am not riding horses to the best of my ability and knowledge. I can keep the horse on the bit but in the posting trot every time I go up my hands come up too.Holding a strap doesn't help. Trying to make my hands go down as I go up doesn't help. What can I do?

Basically if you are stiff in mid-back or in the upper chest and shoulders and the shoulder blades don't slide well over the rib cage… Continue

Jumping

We all strive for the perfect distance.

We practise perfect equitation/body alignment.

We use grids...we use trotting poles...we practise our two point position for hours.

I hear coaches tell student to move on the horse/slow down the horse,...curve your broken line....hold for three allow for three....all in the name of the perfect spot.

I will hear a coach comment..."you had a long spot....you need to add move leg to move him…

Curly Horses -Life after 45!

Having children with severe allergies changes your perspective when you need to rush your 5 year old to the Emergency from an asthma attack from being in an exceptionally clean barn and she didn't even touch anything.

I was 35 then and sold my appendix mare..10 years later...I have purchased (after much research) two young American Bashkir Curly Horses. The thinking was to have some time to let these guys develop and as they grew -my teenage daughters would be on their way to…
