This Week in Horse History - June 14th Through June 20th

June 16th, 2009 - Thoroughbred racehorse Strike The Tiger became the first American-trained and bred horse to ever win the Windsor Castle Stakes held at Royal Ascot. The horse won the five-furlong race with jockey John Velazquez aboard. Wesley Ward, Strike The Tiger's trainer, hoped that the win would prove that it is possible to train a horse in…

Horses and Happiness Go Hand in Hand! :)

Well, we've wrapped up the qualifying season and I couldn't be happier! I've been trying to make it to both the North American Junior Championships held in Kentucky at the end of July where both team and individual medals are awarded and also the National Junior Dressage Championships in Gladstone at the beginning of August where the National Champion is crowned. Our last show was…

A Wonderful Ride on Cider with the Wellep Lever Cheek Bit

Today Shannon asked me to come out early, 8:00 AM because today it is HOT and HUMID. I am so glad she did as it was in the upper 70's F when I got to the farm. Later on today it will be in the mid 90's F, and the humidity is about 90%. A real North Carolina summer. At least we are getting rain this year, lovely thunderstorms that have driven away the danger of going back into our years long drought.

I had gotten the Wellep…

An Ex-racer, and the very long road to recovery

So at my barn there is this tall thin TB ex-racer, 17.3 hands, copper bay. We call her Miley.

Miley is 6 years old. She ran one race before being sold to an owner that longed her before every ride, which about once a month if that. She said she used Miley as a trail horse. Eventually her owner decided this young spirited horse was to much for her, and my trainer took Miley in in hopes to help Miley become the wonderful horse she has the potential to be.
Right now Miley is…

Are You Sitting Straight And Square In The Saddle?

Hi Guys,

Regardless of which discipline you ride, it's very important to sit straight and square in the saddle. Can you tell if you're collapsing at your waist and sitting crookedly?

Ask a ground person to stand behind you.

1. Are your shoulders level (i.e. the same height)?

2. Is your seat in the center of the saddle so that each seatbone is the same distance from the middle of the saddle?

If your shoulders aren't level which means that one…

LEAPING TO NEW HEIGHTS with William Micklem

Should you jump young horses? How young can they be to jump? Here is my home bred High Kingdom jumping a 1.30m oxer as a 3 yo. It is a glorious sight:…

Fluidity not Formulas is the Key to Connecting with Horses

I am not against formulas and lessons in the training of horses and people. I am only against them when they are the only way you go about communicating and training horses.

Following formulas…

Late in Life Beginning Rider - Part 2

When I was thinking about what to write in my blog this week, I was thinking I should write something profound, life changing etc. But no, I think I will write about underwear! It is at this point that all you men can log out since this will be much more information than you really want to know.

When I wrote my first blog, one of my recommendations was to have the right equipment. We all have dreams of the perfect saddle - butter soft, draping… Continue

This Week in Horse History - June 7th Through June 13th

June 9th, 1973 – Thoroughbred racehorse Secretariat became the Triple Crown winner in twenty five years when he won the Belmont Stakes. He only faced four horses for the race - Sham, Twice a Prince, Private Smiles, and My Gallant. Secretariat crossed the wire thirty one lengths ahead of the next horse and…

Three steps forward... a bunch of steps back. :(

Things had been progressing well with the wee lad. He has been a star during ground work, including lungeing and long-lining. We introduced him to a saddle and he acted like he had worn a saddle his whole life. The week of his third birthday we backed him, and he didn't put a foot wrong. First trot with a rider, also no problem. The breeder warned me that it was going almost 'too well', and we did eventually have a little hiccup. One day he felt that we were asking too much... we started to… Continue

Even Mia Likes the Wellep Bit

This week I got to try the Wellep single jointed snaffle bit on Mia. I brought both Mia's bridle with the JP Dr. Bristol and the bridle I used on Cider last week with the Wellep bit so that Debbie could make a choice. After listening to how Cider reacted to the bit Debbie decided it would be worthwhile to try the Wellep bit on Mia. Debbie had a little trouble getting the bit into her mouth, Mia saw it and did not know what to think of it, just that it was a…

Horse snuggles

Little Muffin had a chiropractor visit yesterday, so today was a day off. But, who can resist going to the barn on a weekend anyway?! So, I mucked her paddock, cleaned up stray hay, picked her feet and gave her a grooming. Then we went and ate grass, well, she did, I watched. Nothing like a horse munching her way through the grass. She's very people oriented and loves the attention.

Her little sister who is due in 5 weeks is very snuggable these days. We're not really sure…

Stolen & Slaughtered Horses

I came across this on The Enchanted Forest. My heart broke when I read David's letter. I would put up quite a battle if someone told me they were taking Stormy from me, which is bad enough, but to send these innocent horses to slaughter is unconscionable. Please share David's letter with everyone who loves horses, so we can stop any… Continue

William Micklem says IT’S WORTH THE WAIT

There is no doubt that early intervention is the efficient way to tackle learning difficulties and weaknesses. To nip a problem in the bud leads to both accelerated progress and happier students. This applies to both mental and physical challenges and to both humans and horses. Any behaviour or way of going that is undesirable is much more difficult and time consuming to change if it has become habitual.…

A Stellar Show- But, not stellar eating

Well I fell off the eating healthy wagon yesterday. We were only at the

horse show for the day which made it difficult to really have a

schedule. We left here at 11:30 and I had a bagel with lox and cream

cheese (light) around 10:30. By the time the afternoon performance got

over, it was almost 4:00 before we got to lunch. We ended up in an

italian place that some people we knew wanted to go to. Everything was

heavy cream and there was nothing that I would call… Continue

Late in Life Beginner

Most of the people who know how long I have been involved with horses are often surprised that I am a real beginner when it comes to riding and driving. I got involved with breeding Canadian horses over 10 years ago originally to help save the breed but quite quickly because I loved the breed for its own merits. I was fascinated with bloodlines and breeding for conformation, temperament and movement but with up to 17 horses and a full time job, I had no time to do anything but care for the… Continue
