WET,WET,WET.

No, it's not about the pop group from the 90's!!

It's about the wettest start to the Royal Adelaide Show in a hundred years.

They say there were a thousand lightning strikes in the metro area, all I know is the thunder was so close it caused a traffic accedent in my pants!!

7.30am Friday, all 4 horses and the two ponys loaded well and we were out the gate on time on our way to the Show in good spirits. Tony Hall, Kate, Nick and Briony and myself looking forward to a…

Stable relationships

For me, this one is the longest training program that I have ever been involved in.

How to keep your stable neat and tidy.

I have a wonderful friend that I met back in the spring of 1969. Well, that sure dates me. But from the moment I meet her, I could see that her horses were her number one priority in her life. I have seen that woman, even at the age of 60 plus, rise early every morning, muck out the stalls, wash out the water buckets, measure the feed for every horse, clean… Continue

Life of a teenager in lessons

I am starting this blog for one reason only. Because I feel like writing about my riding experiences, and suck at keeping a journal. That and hopefully some of you will get a laugh at my expense!

So, I had a lesson last night. I was saved by my instructor being absent and another instructor taking her place. Why was I saved? Because my instructor likes to push me and as soon as she sees a flaw she tells me to fix it, and she usually spots them right when they happen so I can't even… Continue

Training a Horse Using the Waterhole Rituals™

I recently had a letter from Helene in New York who was telling me about her attempts to get to know a large German warmblood that was recently bought by her barn owner. Helene freely admits she is only a novice horse rider and has no horse…

Consequent...

Ah my little child, she is quite the charmer. Lately when being taken out to the field, she's been squealing and rearing. Her very favourite means of letting you know she's ready to be seriously naughty. So, we've put on her rope halter, it only takes one good thwack of that with the nice heavy lead rope... consequences, and it's done.

Had a very lovely ride on her today. I think I may have convinced her that I am more patient than she is, I'm not going to give in just…

Horses are the language of the soul

I beleive a horse speaks directly into our soul, instantly bypassing, beyond the everyday suffering and pain of human endurance, and migrate directly into our beating hearts.

We, horse lovers, both feeling that wisdom and holding it close, perceive their beauty, their trust, their unconditional love as on of our greatest life's treasures.

Within a horse's open hearts, we allow ourselves to gather the love we have stuffed beneath the surface, all… Continue

The Horse In History: We've Reached One Year!

Hello Everyone,

Well, I've reached the one year point with my blog! I can't believe that time has gone so quickly, and I'd like to thank all of you for reading each week. It's wonderful to know that people are enjoying the blog.

Since I think it will be difficult to continue to come up with multiple events for each week without repeating those I've focused on last year, I will be ending the "Horse in History" blog - but don't worry, there's another blog in the works! I'll be… Continue

The wheelbarrow

I know it has happened to all of us at one time or another. I know that it has happened to me a lot over the years. I clean out one stall, head for the next and think I can just put one more pitch fork of manure on top. Just one more. And if that one stays, I just might try one more. I can do it, just one more.

Now it is past full to the brim and I may have hit the tipping point. The point of no return. I know I have reached it when I first notice that the tire is starting to look a… Continue

Lucky horseshoe

Today was a day that I fully took to heart "An attitude of Gratitude"

I live in Mesa, AZ and I go down Main street sometimes to get home. Although it is not a freeway, it is three lanes wide on each side. It gets a lot of traffic. However, there is no sidewalks on the part that goes West towards Apache Junction. There is hardly any shoulder and no bike lane leaving very little room for error.

On the way home I say a man in a wheelchair pulled off… Continue

Cider Forgives Me

This morning's weather was marvelous, just in the 60's F when I rode. No ice vest, no Cool Cap. It felt odd.

After my last ride on Cider two weeks ago I put a lot of thought into how I could improve things. The first thing I did was change from the Wellep Lever Cheek single jointed snaffle to the regular Wellep Full Cheek single jointed…

Bond Between Horse & Human!! Re: Grandma Teddy

This is a story I love to tell...and even though it happened 6 years ago now...my eyes still water when I think of it. Six years ago now Mom underwent triple by-pass and aortic valve replacement surgery. When my brother, sister, and I saw her in recovery right after the surgery at about 6:00 in the evening we thought she didn't look too bad considering her age..80...and what she had just been through. We were relieved it was over and encouraged by the way she looked. It had been a long 6…

Reprogramming Your Subconscious Mind to Overcome Fear

Hi Guys,

One of the biggest mistakes riders make when we're trying to overcome horseback riding fears is that we direct our efforts toward the conscious mind. You know--willpower, iron-jawed determination. The problem with that strategy is that you can only make short-term, temporary changes when you direct your efforts to your conscious mind. To make permanent changes, direct your efforts to the part of your brain that truly determines your actions--your subconscious mind.…

A Horse version of h-o-r-s-e

We've been staying busy at work. I've also have a couple of other projects going on that keep me from my weekly blogging. We continue our riding three times a week. We recently had some fun playing an old fashioned game of h-o-r-s-e. You know, the backyard basketball game where you call your shot. Here's our latest… Continue

The Gap Between Theoretical Training Methods and Practical Application

When training a horse, there is always a gap between the theoretical and the practical and this can be very frustrating. My advice for this is pretty much always that more time is needed. I can’t overstate the beautiful simplicity of the first Waterhole Ritual™ as a preparation for the rest.…
