Second Big Ride

On Monday afternoon, I saw what the weather forecast looked like, I wasn’t too busy at work, so I decided to take yesterday off.  What a great decision.  The weather was perfect for trail riding.

My sister works second shift and usually rides in the mornings.  I took Cruiser with her and Ranger for a short ride.  She was really happy to have the company.

When we got back, she went to work and I saddled up Cole.  We were going to go on our second long solo ride.  Unlike…

Slowly getting back to normal

Its been a long year for us here, my brother in law(may he rest in peace) has lost his year long battle with cancer.Jayne lost her horse in june to a rare unexpected medical condition. All the general things life can throw at a person came this year and so my focus has been on family and left little time for me to keep up with barnmice. However things should be begin to settle down now and I should be posting some updates soon. Including some new video footage of chance the wonder horse.

Excellence in Western Pleasure ?

I have been in telephone contact with AQHA regarding this video.  The horses are being ridden in violations of the rules for AQHA and NSBA for the class and of the abuse rules.

A sunny weekend with lotsof trail riding

Finally!  A sunny weekend!  I rode on trail, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  It was awesome.

Friday was just a quick trail ride on Cruiser before sunset.  I then rode Cole in the arena.  I am so glad I am going to start feeding on Friday evenings next month.  We are supposed to feed at 8:00, and the feeder fed at 6:45.  It is just hay, so I let Cole eat while I cleaned our stalls.  When I was done, I took him in the arena.  Wow, was he crabby.  He kept trying to go to the gate,…

Spring shows

A very proud parent and coach. My son Nick has started to ride his young pony Lollie pop out at shows this spring. At the Pt Elliot Show yesterday he rode her around the showjumping like a pro ( allow me some fatherly exagerations). The pony is only just 7, his mother has been riding him out at the last couple of outings in the pony hack rings and has one qually for the Royal…

Lesson 14 - Thursday October 6 2011

I wasn't certain what was going to happen today when going to get Cooper. Would he come? Would I have to get someone from the early lesson to go get him?

I was so happy this time when he came when I called. The paddock was still a mess with so much water and mud. I had a carrot in a bucket and opened the gate to let him come out of the paddock on his own.

I didn't boot him again because his legs were wet and muddy. I tried to get off what I could but I did not want to put them…

Mia Takes Care of Me

This week was not too great for me.  My son had brought home a cold from his university and I had been fighting that pesky virus all week.  Colds can be crippling diseases for people with MS, triggering devastating exacerbations of the MS.  Luckily mine got no worse than stumbling and dropping things and I altered my supplements, but I could not ride today because I finally came down with this cold.  Bummer. …

Love Poem

I fell in love with horses all over again this week. Yes, it was a pretty short fall and yes, it does happen every week. And no, it never gets old. Does my enthusiasm make me seem less professional?

It has been also been one of those weeks when most of my clients are having challenges with their horses. Some of the challenges are old ones and some are brand new but regardless of origin or cause- a challenge is an opportunity by another name.…

The Big Ride

The Big Ride

Last month, I was so frustrated with the weather.  Only once, near the beginning of the month, I was able to ride Cole with Ellen on Ranger past the big river.  From then on, even though we took vacation time, we never had another chance to repeat the ride.  I wanted to do it a couple more times with Ranger before I tried it on my own.  It just didn’t work out the way I…

Saddle Fit and Swelling

Saddle Fit and Swelling

One of my associates in Europe recently came across this issue at a client visit. This chestnut gelding was exhibiting blisters and swelling beside the withers on the right side – but apparently there was no saddle pressure to account for this. The saddle was sitting perfectly aligned. (I especially mention the colour since chestnuts often seem to be particularly vulnerable to skin problems).…
