My Horse Doesn't Like Me (This Week)

It started last Saturday. Although we’d had what seemed to be a quite successful session, with Brody circling much more consistently and in a more relaxed manner, I could see the first signs of annoyance during handgrazing afterwards. On Thursday, Brody had surprised me by responding to every “Aaaand UP!” by lifting his head from grazing and looking to me for the next direction. But now only…

A Tale of Two Spines

Around a year ago. I got Gustav Steinbrecht's "The Gymnasium of the Horse" (first published in 1884), one of the truly classic dressage books. I've read the first 93 pages several times, and I found myself coming back to certain passages over and over again, for they introduce and explain a concept that I had not fully understood from my earlier dressage…

Harnessed blessings

Sleigh Ride, Harnessed Blessings by Roberta Edstrom

Flying snow from pounding hooves,

Gliding, the sleigh onward moves.

The trees with white wondrous seem,

The horses snort and blow out steam.

Our hearts are glad with family and… Continue

Saddle Fit and Horse Straightness

One of the most common questions I am asked has to deal with both saddle ‘straightness’ and horse ‘straightness’ and whether the correct thing is to try and force the horse into ‘straightness’ with exercise or to accommodate their basic ‘non-straightness’ with a crooked saddle.

10 Diet Tips to a Healthier You: Tip 8

10 Diet Tips to a Healthier You, Tip 8

Avoid Eating Out – eating out is tricky business, sometimes you can

think you are picking healthy options, and yet they are full of calories

and fat. Just the other day I was at a restaurant and thinking of ordering

the vegetarian pad thai – until I found out the chicken fingers and fries had

less calories because the pad thai had 1900 calories even though it was

noodles,…

When I Die, Can I Come Back as Your Horse?

I have heard that line a few too many times. I guess it’s meant to be funny. I was flattered once when a vet said it to introduce me. That got a smile.

The least flattering time I heard this re-incarnation plan was while I was rubbing mineral ice on my horse’s inner thigh. He had torn a muscle and was in his second month of stall rest. The man…

Equine Dentistry!

Well it was time for the equine dentist to come out again.

It is always amazing to watch a dentist do his work on our horses. Most of them had no real problems and just needed maintenance work. My young gelding surprised us with a baby tooth that did not fall out and needed to be extracted. He his much happier now and his swelling is going down.

I highly recommend to use an equine dentist rather then just have your vet do it.

Stina’s Views on Liberty Training

The wonderful thing about the internet is that you can reach people all across the world and never have to leave home. Stina, who is Norwegian but lives on the island of St. Vincent in the Caribbean, is a friend and student. Stina got in touch with me towards the end of 2007 and I started coaching her by phone and email. The results for her and her herd of wild horses have been astonishing, for which I must give Stina huge…
