You Might as Well Enjoy the Ride.

We had an Introduction to Driving clinic at Infinity Farm last weekend. It was a fun group ready for a new experience. Our schoolmaster/donkey-boys taught the clinic, along with me and Lisa.

Participants asked my favorite question about driving. “What do you do if you have a runaway?” The traditional answer, passed down from generations of teamsters, is enjoy the ride.

I had a decent runaway when Ernest and I were still green. There was an explosion of sound behind us,…

A Lesson Horse is Born….

… and Grace gives herself a promotion.

Dressage borrows lots of language from ballet -after all, we are the dancers of the horse world. Pas de Trois is a dance of three. I have commandeered that phrase to describe riding lessons as a conversational dance between horse, rider and instructor. All three participants have to be heard for the dance to succeed.

I am always…

Waiting for a foal

It's foaling season at Sweetwater Ranch.  One of my clients bought a lovely dressage mare by Olympic Ferro already bred to Grannius II - and I covered two of my own mares with Louie.  So, this year I will get to see what he produces, and we already have one foal on the ground.   He has been named Sweetwater's Alliance - barn name Lance - and he is lovely with good straight legs, up on his pasterns and nice feet all around.  And BIG.  In fact, Dr Marteney said he is the biggest foal he has…

Taking the Blame.

It’s generally considered good manners in the barn to graciously take the blame anytime your horse is less than spectacular, and give your horse all the credit after a good ride. But it is more than manners, it is also a rider’s responsibility.…

Horsey Literature

Some people don’t like to read. Luckily if you’re born with a passion for horses, you don’t mind it as long as someone’s saddling up. We all grew up with classics such as Marguerite Henry’s books, The Black Stallion, Pony Pals, The Saddle Club, Thoroughbred, Heartland and Canterwood Crest series. The list goes on. However I’ve looked through my bookshelf and compiled a short list of lesser-known horsey books you should all definitely have a look at.

Horsey Volunteering

Therapeutic Riding Centers: these places usually run on 99% volunteers so they’re always looking for new volunteers. You can even bring along your non-horsey friends since most of the volunteer work involves working with riders. Try the Community Association for Riding for the Disabled in Toronto, or King’s Ransom Stables in Schomberg.

Horse Shows: student volunteers are usually needed for… Continue

Girl Power wins Big at the FTI Great Charity Challenge in Wellington, Florida

An all girl showjumping team sponsored by prominent showjumping owner and breeder Susan Grange scored second place and won $125,000 for their charity Horses N Heroes. For several months I have been helping Mindy Nolan-Morrow. Executive Director of the mentoring program for girls, write letters to potential sponsors and donors, construct press releases, plan events, create marketing materials and in general get the word out.  When I heard about the FTI Great Charity Challenge, I told Mindy…

Love the horse Blogs

Did you know that there almost no better way to promote your business than get involved with blogs and the horse community. I just thought that I would put that fact out there. I love blogs and I love the horse business world. I believe that the horse industry has it own set of rules for marketing.

One of the things I adore the most, it the intimacy that is required between the horse owner and the store owner. If I want to have a life long friend and customer, I better not only know… Continue
