It has rained for three days just prior to the our club's yearly horse show. Everything was under water when we arrived. A few of the men rounded-up some shovels and dug some trenches to help drain the water from the Arena.
I hung out with a few other rides, and we sat along side of the arena, just waiting for someone to hit the dirt. We were actually taking bets on which rider would be the dirtiest by the end of the day. Not good, I know, but this was in my younger, more naive…

After some years into my marriage, I made a phone call to three other Horsewomen I knew that would change my marriage forever.
The phone call went something like this. "I want to start a prayer group to
pray for my husband, otherwise I am going to file for a divorce."
To my surprise, the other three women instantly agreed saying almost the same thing about the Cowboys in their lives.
Within a week, we meet and one of the wives had…

Is there anything better than watching the colts and fillies playing their games?
Kicking their heels high in the air,
jumping and bouncing being the center of their universe. I have a passion for the babies. Like so many horse lovers, years ago my husband and I bought a stallion, a few mares and breed a few babies.
I love watching them and playing with them. Just like kids, they learn so…

It is important to celebrate every time you accomplish something with your horse. It is also important to stay motivated by taking the time to step back from all your hard work and have fun. Here are some suggestions:
Play games with your horse. Playing games is a great way to gain confidence while putting your new skills to practical use. In our arena we participate in obstacle courses, relay races, musical rides, and our new favourite activity, equine soccer. You can play…

I just wanted to share a quick little story with you. It is not really about a horse, but it is about a donkey.
One morning a rancher went to the barn to feed all his animals but when he was almost done, he realized he could not find one of his most favorite pets, his little mini-donkey. He search the entire farm and had almost given up when he remember the old well out back. Sure enough his little pet had fallen in.
The rancher tried all morning to figure out how to get…

For most of us riding is easier if we have a coach or instructor to support and help us. It is always good to have another set of eyes on the ground and someone to offer encouragement to help us get over the emotional bumps.
There are a great many good riders in the equestrian world who teach. Being a good rider though does not always make someone a good teacher. Riding and teaching are two completely different skill sets. The ability to get on an athletic, energetic horse…

Today, I was just inspired to create some extra WHINNY in your life, so I thought that I would share this recipe with you. My entire point to my life, is to remember everyday how blessed I am and
to greet my day with the same enthusiasm that my horse greets me:
whinny for all that I am worth, which is limitless.
Share these with your horse, make a batch of Chocolate chips cookies for yourself, and enjoy you day. I also have a great oatmeal raisin recipe, for you that…

My bones may creek, my back may hurt, chores take me a heck of a lot longer,
For sure, my butt may not look as good as it did when I first leaned to ride
But Gratitude makes my heart still sings and my soul still flies as I saddle-up
most favorite stead
and head down the road for another adventure and a great little ride.
I know I am a heck of a lot slower, throwing my leg over that heavy old roper,
My rides not as long, I have been long grounded from any…

Why do we not talk more about fear, when fear is a common emotion in cross country riders? There is probably no sane person who is totally fearless and everyone has his or her limits. Even a Grand Prix racing car driver, who is brave enough to…

"What's the purpose of life?"
Besides the love of a horse, sweeping the isle of the barn, smelling the wild flowers, watching the birds, listening for the morning's
whinny, felling the softness of a horse's nose?
Besides the rhythm of a steady loop, the secrets told in their ear, the freshness of a new bale of hay?
Besides bicycles, long walks, and hot chocolate, the munching of oats?
Besides holding…

Daily Oats: Food for the horse lovers soul
“COWGIRL”
©2008 Michael Gasaway
“Horse lover”, “roper”, “can chaser” or “barrel racer”, all of these and more she has been called;
But “Cowgirl” is the term she likes best of all.
It describes her right down to a tee you see;
From her earliest childhood memories, it is what; she’s always wanted to be.
From her Stetson down to her boots n’ spurs, oh how she looks the part;
But her real cowgirl…

Daily Oats: Food for the horse lover's soul
This is a collection of quotes that I have used on the Knot-A-Tail Facebook page. Most of them are mine, but a few others have joined the herd as well. I hope you enjoy them.
Within the warmth of my horse's breath, I will find the air that I need to live today, I will find the wind to fly to the heights of my dreams, I will find the one I am meant to be.
As I gather my horse's mane and get ready…

Winters in Canada can be very long and arduous for the horse owner. If you don't have a riding arena the snow and the cold can really limit the quality and quantity of your rides. Don't get me wrong I love riding on those nice sunny winter days with a fresh powder on the ground but those days are far and few between here in southern Ontario. Most days we are dealing with deep snow, icy conditions, very cold weather or just a very bleak cloudy day.
I'll stop there before I…
