A Bit About Me and What I Do

I am 28 years old and have been working with Thoroughbred race horses since my college years. I have had a hand in nearly every aspect of the Thoroughbred industry, from breaking yearlings at Juddmonte Farms in Lexington, KY to working with mares and foals, to exercising flat horses as well as steeplechase horses, and working with horses in rehab.  In 2010, I found After the Races, a 501(c)3 that rehabilitates and rehomes Thoroughbred race horses while promoting the usefulness and…

Racing Record

You know, I love to watch all the horse races when they come on. My family, of nine, and I like to pick out a horse, usually by uniqueness of name, and pick it to come in first, or second or third. The one thing I so enjoy about watching horse racing is being able to sit with family. In my youth of fourteen and three quarters I have noticed something in what seems to be all races. The victorious horse always seems to start in the very, very back. When that horse comes to the final stretch it…

Horse racing both past and present

Have you ever noticed that when ever a horse wins the derby and/or preakness, it is usually a horse that starts in the back or middle of the group, and then comes to the outside , once it is on the outside it comes to the front and no horse can ever catch up? Secretariat always started in the back, came to the side, and…

Meet Norman the one-eyed ex racehorse!

Big bay gelding Norman was rescued by Toronto horse lover Heather Young from certain death when his racing career didn't pan out. In 40 starts, Norman only recorded 2 wins and placed or showed in 15, despite being a son of the famed Alydeed and, like most Ontario thoroughbreds, was descended from Northern Dancer.

He was shipped around from trainer to trainer and was all set to be sent to the glue factory when a rescue organization stepped in and saved his life. When Heather met…

Norman the One-Eyed Wonder Horse

It's been awhile since I've last posted anything but lots has happened.  Norman continues to do well with one eye, he has setbacks but they have all been relatively minor thankfully.

I started writing a kid's book about Norman last year and just this past November it actually got published and is getting some positive feedback.  Helps that a portion of the proceeds are going to LongRun and Heaven Can Wait equine rescues and Norman is putting his hoof print on some of the…

Bad break on Race day

Sleek,

his coat shines

Coppertone’s aglow

Muscles tense as etched glass lines.

Drugged,

Eyes all a glare.

Fear, sweat and agony turns,

While running nostrils flare.

Risky Business meets hustler

W. Brett Wilson, Canadian Entrepeneur and multi-millionaire, stated that on his upcoming "Risky Business" television show “We’ve got a guy who’s been a standard bred horse trainer and he is a hustler. This guy knows how to buy horses, run them and then flip them. So we’ll probably buy a race horse, run it in four of five races, and then we’ll see if we can make money by flipping it."

What is being planned as regards a…

Running Em Cheap.

I enjoyed my brief time working as a groom at Hastings Park Racetrack here in Vancouver BC. Apart from getting yelled at for not shoveling fast enough or putting foreign race tack on incorrectly.. overall very good learning experience. I learned some pretty great phrases while I was there too, as well as how to truly 'do it yourself'.

It was a real reality check for me. I had come from pretty pretty princess hunter world where my tack was polished, my horse was polished and I…

Is the Grand National too Dangerous?

As long as there has been racing, there’s been someone to ask just how safe it is for both jockeys and horses. This years Grand National claimed the lives of two horses; Ornais at the fourth fence and Dooney’s Gate at the sixth. Both suffered fatal falls during the raced dubbed as “the ultimate test of horse and rider”.

Although there is some speculation as to when the first Grand National was run, most historians believe it was in 1836. The course is 4 miles and 4 feet long, run…

Different Breeds in Racing

When horse racing comes to mind, a herd of running Thoroughbreds vying for first is usually what comes to mind. However, there are different types of races geared towards different breeds that are becoming more popular throughout Canada and the US.

Standardbreds

Standardbred racing is the second most prolific type of racing in North America. Horses pull small carts known as sulkies that are piloted by a jockey. They race in either a trot or pace. Except in continental… Continue
