“Too bad about that half pass to the left.”
My horse and I were leaving the arena after my test, reins long and my trademark competition smile: Lips stuck on my gums above my teeth. I had a great horse.
The comment was made by a woman who felt no sympathy at all for…

I had some one ask if I could give them some good tips for the show season. This is a good question and yes, as a veteran of the show ring I certainly can give you some good tips. It doesn’t really matter what discipline you are in, as showing is showing and it takes its toll on both the horse and the rider. (the horse in this photo was my 27 year old…

A very proud parent and coach. My son Nick has started to ride his young pony Lollie pop out at shows this spring. At the Pt Elliot Show yesterday he rode her around the showjumping like a pro ( allow me some fatherly exagerations). The pony is only just 7, his mother has been riding him out at the last couple of outings in the pony hack rings and has one qually for the Royal…

Then don’t go to the show. Seriously.
DON’T go if:
- you aren’t getting excellent rides at home, mentally and physically, both you and your horse.
- you haven’t taken your horse off-property in many months (go somewhere lower-key first).
- you haven’t done your “homework”: both you and your horse are fit, and riding AT LEAST one level (regardless of discipline of riding) higher than what you will be doing at the show.
- you are struggling…

Ive been thinking (you can smell the smoke from there can't you) that I need to focus on the things I can change and let go of the crap that I can't. (sounds AA-ish, I am actually 7 and a half years sober.)
I'm not even going to talk about the "crap" I cant change right now and focus on what I CAN change.
**I am tired and unhealthy. I am, what I have recently found out, a "bad" vegetarian. I have been this way for about 3 years. I cut out meat but havent added any vegetables.…

So I'm pretty new to blogging, but I decided that I had a super day today and it would be fun to at least document some of it. Today was Treasure's third show of the year (second show away from home) and he was absolutely brilliant!! I think today was the first time he went to a show and didn't spook at anything - a milestone for sure! He was a bit quick for the judge's liking in our Western…

My latest, a little different from the rest. Not as outrageously funny, more poignant. What's important is the final message.
In it I make fun of everyone, myself included. It is of course completely ridiculous yet annoyingly true. I hope you all like it! (Dressage Queen with over 15,000 views is a hard act to…

Well, after a mammoth 8 hour drive in the new truck we arrived safely and everyone travelled well. Wentworth is in the western district of New South Wales, so a fair way from Inman Valley. My wife ,Kate, has a family connection with the area and she was the first Miss Wentworth showgirl. As this was the 20th anniversary of that milestone in her life we felt duty bound to return for the show ( plus the mother in law said we had to!). I took two Showjumpers and the kids took a pony each , plus…

We're finally home! After a long four day weekend my mom, Chance, and I all made it back safely. We had a fabulous weekend! Chance was so well behaved and he acted like a total pro. Unfortunately Teri couldn't make it over to California but another Arizona
horse trainer, Kim Yacabucci, was able to help warm me up on Friday and Saturday. Here's all the details!
We…
