Highly effective and positive foal training for the lazy

I want to share with you my way of getting a foal comfortable with humans. I don't believe in imprint training (meaning handling the foal right after birth) for several reasons; one of them being that it's not the most effective. Studies, both official and my own, has shown that the best way to get a foal confident with people is to kiss up to mommy and let the her show the foal that people are great. Being willing to wait just a little bit is a fantastic shortcut!

Training Tip of the Week: There are a lot of heroes in the graveyard.

When I was studying under legendary Australian reining and cow horse trainer, Ian Francis, he used to remind me that there are a lot of heroes in the graveyard. What he meant by that was that too many people get on horses that aren't ready to be ridden…

Every horse has a thinking side to his brain, but until you show him how to use it, he doesn't even know it exists. The thinking side is shoved way back in the corner of the horse's brain. It's like a tiny crystal ball sitting on a table covered up with an old…

"My Horse Loves Me"

My horse nickers when she hears me coming. She comes to the fence to greet me and stands quietly while I scratch her on the forehead or kiss her on the nose. She always lets me catch her. She respects my space. She will take treats very carefully from my hand. She seems to enjoy being in my presence, and when I ride her, she always… Continue

"ACTIVE VS PASSIVE "LEADERSHIP"

"In a world full of horse trainers, clinicians and equine professionals competing to make a mark for themselves, many find new ways to reinvent the wheel; however, several try to put their knowledge into some package where we may identify with it all.
