The Chink in Cole’s Armor

The Chink in Cole’s Armor

No horse is perfect. Every one of them has a chink in their armor. You can work with them and improve them, but deep down, it never goes away. Starry D just hates bugs. Cruiser hates motorcycles. Ranger can’t deal with rain on the roof. (He’s the biggest sissy of them all.)

Cole Train is afraid of horses. He has been like this since I got him. I remember the first few weeks when I had a horrible time getting him to walk through one of the doors in… Continue

Oakley Diaries - 4: Hi-yo spooky! Away!

Oakley would like me to think he's a very high-strung horse. Well, he is pretty lively, but he's gone to great lengths to convince me that he is too difficult to ride, so I should just leave him to munch his hay in his paddock, because every time we left the paddock, he'd find something to be frightened of. Our walk up the path to the stable, or the walk from stable to arena invariably went like this:

"Ahh! What is that frightening thing?" (It's a piece of wood in the…

Nirvana

Despite the heat this past weekend I did some training kind of riding with my horse. I went to the barn early so that I could ride while it was still cool compared to the blistering heat we've been getting later on in the day.

My horse was anxious to get to work, futzing a bit while grooming, a sign he was anxious to get riding. I'm very lucky in that he is abundantly clear with his emotions and when he's wanting a ride he'll try to drag…

Equine Behavior: Spookiness

With all the articles and clinics and "professionals" giving their two cents on equine behavior these days, I figured I might as well throw my two cents in and see where it got me. Equine behavior is a very broad subject; it can include anything from cribbing and other annoying vices, to the language of Equus as made famous by Monty Roberts. Being an inquisitive and active… Continue

What to do if your pony is spooky....

Ok, so up until like 5 days ago I just rode through all my ponies bucks, rears and take-offs that were caused by her spooking. I had a lesson with my dressage coach and she gave me the idea to do a inside flection. Also make sure that your horse of pony is in front of your leg, that will give them something to focus on and they will forget to think about the scary thing! If… Continue

Bomb Proof Your Horse Before The Show:Tackle the Monsters before they Tackle You.

Bomb Proof Your Horse Before The Show

Tackle the Monsters before they Tackle You

With over 35 years show experience I’ve come to know exactly what is going to upset a horse new to competition.

If the horse eating monsters are handled on the front end, you will have a huge advantage while competing, and definitely have a much, much better over all show experience and confidence builder for both you and your partner.

Just because your horse appears to have a… Continue

10 Monsters To Tackle Before The Show

10 Monsters To Tackle Before The Show

This week I have a list of suggestions to make sure your horse is mentally ready for the environment of a horse show.

Don’t be lulled into a false sense of security that your horse is laid back without first practicing the following list.

Making sure he’s ready will save you time, money, heartache. and headache.

ARENA ACCESSORIES

1.) If your arena doesn’t currently have bright flowers and bushes boarding… Continue

Ideas?

My three year old mustang is afraid of cars. Well to be more specific, he is scared of the noise they make going down the road (think tires on pavement). Right when the car gets past him, he turns and bolts (thats how we discovered his fear at least - plowed fields make for a soft landing!). He has never spooked like that before. Because of that reaction, I've been taking him out to eat grass by the side of the road and watch cars go by (its not constant). I can tell he would run if the halter… Continue
