Fearless Ron and Ollie Phippen

According to the old proverb, there’s more than one way to skin a cat. When it comes to training horses, the truth of that was never more clearly shown than by two men I knew who lived on the North Somerset levels. They lived less than two miles apart, but could hardly have been more different in their appearance, their manner, and their methods of horse training. The one thing they had in common was that both were almost monotonously successful at training…

Babies... the saga

So, little Havoc got to go out in the field today.  Perhaps we were a bit naive, thinking he would be fine out there.  I wasn't too sure, but, I'm one of *those* owners, so, I was letting the experienced folks make the call.

One 10 month old baby.... 4 geldings.... one field....  They ran around a couple times, Havoc leading, he can out run them.  Then it looked good, he was by himself, they were up in the one corner, no one was freaking out, big field....  Until one of the…

...and IthatI is why I have horses.

Little guy is going to be coming up to live with me in a couple months, so, seemed like a good time to start the journey towards loading into trailers. He leads about anywhere just fine, but my trainer suggests that we teach him to get on himself, which means sending him into the trailer. Well, he hasn't done anything like that yet, he's just a BABY (ask him!). So, I took the trailer down last night, to find out that there was a snowfall warning for today. No problem park the trailer, do some… Continue

Starting Young Horses

It’s not recommended you start a horse young. You should be waiting till they are at least four years old which is about when horses finish growing. Otherwise, starting them too young can cause damage to their skeletal structure and weakens their muscles and ligaments. It’s also a deterrent to some horse buyers who are aware of the damage it causes.

However if you feel you can’t wait, there are ways of reducing the damage. Make sure your horse is going through long straight lines in… Continue

October 24th 2010 Recovery, Recovery, Recovery

Recovery...thats the word of the day. My hand that I cut open 10 days ago is healing very well. It still hurts to hold a hair brush, use a squirt bottle or use a body brush using downward strokes. Up until 10 minutes ago I couldnt take the cap off of my water bottle.

Part of my healing has been just getting back out to the barn to interact with my horses. Im a little nervous around them, since I am so protective of my hand right now, but thats fading away each time I go down…

William Micklem asks IS THIS A MAGIC SUIT OF CLOTHES?

Dublin show at the Royal Dublin Society in Ballsbridge is the centrepiece and driving force for many in the Irish Equestrian community. It is so dominant in our culture that people just talk about it as ‘the horse show’, despite the fact that there are…

The guest this week on Vickers Tree~Nanette Levin author of Turning Challenging Horses into Willing Partners

Cynastry welcomes Nanette Levin to the Vickers Tree this week. Horses have provided peace, companionship, an education and spiritual enrichment for Nanette Levin for the past 46 years. For more than two decades, her focus has been on starting young horses under saddle and working with horses that have had their brains scrambled by prior handling. Today, she’s learning more from the horses than ever, and enjoying the opportunity to have the farm herd’s guidance on new things every day while they… Continue

taking care with baby

How much is too much? Some trainers suggest not working the young horse too much, or very often, especially if a warmblood, to prevent long-term injury. Other trainers believe that if you're not at level 5 or 6 by 6 years old, you aren't progressing fast enough. My trainer noticed yesterday that delph is bum high, so is still growing-as you would expect with only being 4. And she is so amiable, and training so well, that we are moving forward. If we stayed at the same level, she would be…
