Up here in Michigan it's way too COLD to ride. At three degrees and lower,to ride now would provoke frostbite. Fortunately, being from Michigan, I could careless about it being cold, just give me my horse. Today, this afternoon, my dear friend and trainer, Julie and I, went to the barn in a whopping 10 degrees(somebody say heatwave?!). While I didn't ride due to the both of us being sufficiently frozen, we did let the horses run. I took Cody and she took…

2014 has come and gone like the leaves on a ttree in the fall. Now we embrace 2015 with open arms and new goals. Last year was the year of the horse. For me and some of you, it really was. Four months ago, I started riding again. Something I had given up on doing due to fear. Now, four months later, I am doing great. I usually don't make resolutions,I've never been one to do that. But this year, I did make one. My goal is to accomplish my fear head-on…

Chimerism: what is it? Chimerism is when fraternal twins fuse together while still in utero, resulting in an organism with two sets of DNA. It doesn't occur often, and both equines and people can be…

I have been working on lots of ground work with the horse I ride lately. It's been a blast, Parelli training is really fun. Each time we cover something it goes a lot smoothly than before. I've been covering backing through a space, roughly three feet wide and over a pole. At first, the horse I ride was apprehensive about going through that small space and over a pole. Not only was he apprehensive, but my cues and directions were off a little. We made…

People, I have a problem. It's been my fatal flaw throughout my sixteen years of life.......I have a phobia of failing. It's true. The thought of falling anything-tests, riding, contests, anything, causes me to literally hive up. I'm serious. Right now my biggest issue is that I am not assertive enough with the horse I handle. I am a passive person, being assertive isn't in my DNA. Oh, I can be assertive, I just don't like it. It really frustrates me that I am having this problem with…

A friend of mine shared this on facebook and I just had to post it here. It's amazing.
Equines less than 4 years are not supposed to carry a heavy weight and yes that is including the rider....
Once apon a time this was well known and horses were not considered usable until this age and the majority of the chosen educated horses were not at the prime age for education at the age of 15!
After…

Dear Santa, I am writing in regards to the fact that my rider is busy writing her own letter to you.
The first thing I would like to request, is a big bag of carrots. Not baby carrots like what my girl gets me, but the biggest, fattest carrots you can get. I imagine…

Free. That's how I feel everytime I ride 'my' horse indoors and outdoors. Empowered. I think we all feel Empowered when we sit upon the back of a nine-hundred pound animal and ride. How could we not feel this way? Great kings, emperors, leaders and generals and even traitors rode today's horse.
Alexander the Great had Bucephalus. Genghis Khan was believed to have a stunning Akhal-teke. George Washington rode Nelson, a horse who carried him through Valley Forge and Yorktown.…

Frank Hayes, born 1883 died 1923 due to a heart attack he had on June fourth. He rode a lovely mare named Sweet Kiss(later renamed) in a race in Belmont Park in New York. Sweet Kiss's owners didn't expect her to win any races in her lifetime, but Frank convinced them to let him try her out. Not only did the name win, but Frank set history. Half way through the…
