We called upon our Barnmice members to provide us with a recipe for making homemade horse treats and Darla of Darla's Cake Blog came through with flying colors! Check out this great (easy to follow) horse treat recipe below and be sure to share it with your horsey friends!

Homemade Horse Biscuits:

  • 1 cup grated carrot
  • 1 grated apple
  • 2 tablespoons corn oil
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup flour

Preheat oven to 350 degrees and lightly grease a cookie sheet (I actually forgot to do this, but I used a nonstick cookie sheet).

In large bowl mix together carrot, apple, corn oil, and molasses. In a separate bowl, combine salt, rolled oats, and flour until blended. Add the dry ingredients to the wet and mix well.

Spread dough out on cookie sheet (to be cut into squares after baking) or drop tablespoon-sized mounds and flatten slightly for individual cookies. Bake 20-25 minutes and cool completely.

I’m not sure about the best way to store these, but I put them in a ziploc bag and kept them in the refrigerator out at the barn. They didn't last long.

Yum! We bet even some little dogs out there would enjoy one of these treats. Great as a reward after a long training session or a lazy trail ride, your horse will love them!

I would suggest that all of the ingredients be organic and not GMO's!
