Buck's first wife is now brain-damaged from a riding accident. I agree whole-heartedly and do not understand the aversion in the western riding world to helmets.

Glad you are still with us, and your experience is the scary one: glad you got the help you needed. Like good riders, you are tough, something that sometimes works against us. Again, glad you are okay. And I agree with you. I look at people who don't wear helmets and it impacts how I think of them. It's a different version of "judging a book by its cover." Not proud of it, but I do. Thanks for your comment.

I did a 50 mile endurance ride this past weekend in Auburn. It was a very technical trail and the week before the ride management spent lots of time removing fallen trees, branches, etc. I am a good rider - professional? the best? NO. But a good rider. I wear a helmet for the same reason I wear a seat belt. I am a good driver but sh*t happens that doesn't have anything to do with whether I am good, experience, etc, or not.
So, I was riding about 8mph behind my friend during the ride on a narrow trail with steep drop off. Her horse did a little trip and she yells watch out...as my horse (a very, very sure footed experienced endurance horse) catches his foot on the branch/root and goes face first into the dirt. I fly over his head and tumble. He regains his balance and jumps over me. No broken ribs, or outward issues - he has a scuffed knee and I am a bit sore but we finish. That night I have a headache and can't keep anything down, barfing my guts out. I realize in the morning -when I wake up alive - that I likely have a concussion which is what the headache/vomiting is all about. Thank you brain-bucket! I just don't get the 'no helmet' thing. The number of branches I hit my head on alone is enough to strap on something hard. I am a good rider but no one on this earth was going to stay on top of my horse with his nose in the dirt (yes, there was mud caked in his hackamore - poor guy). And what if he hadn't cleared me when he jumped over me? Big hoof in the noggin? I actually look at people who don't wear helmets as bad riders Just my opinion. No one needs to die - it's dumb not to wear a helmet.
