I like this clip because she so clearly shows how much she loves this. Getting up on this horse for a ride is simply a matter of climbing on top of pretty much anything and she comes running into place.

Whether or not we are going for a ride we always follow the mounting with a little scratch to keep her motivated. A nice way to start the ride for both of us, and the horse isn't just easy to get on, she also learns to wait until the rider asks for forward movement.

I think this is a better way to get a horse to stand for mounting than using punishment; it's safer, easier, more effective and a lot nicer for both horse and human. This clip isn't the best quality (filmed with a mobile phone) but one can see what's going on. After I show how to get started one of my students takes over, and a few minutes later the are on a roll. The horse, a two year old mare, hasn't tried this before, but she catches on…
The rules of the "chair game"?
If the horse can catch the person and gets in the right position, she wins the game. Can't get the scratches if one stands too far away; a concept understood by all horses with a scratch :) Ask the Olympian Week # 24: Tips for Motivating a Lazy Horsetag:www.barnmice.com,2009-10-26:1773158:Video:1662152009-10-26T15:38:09.947ZPatti at OMEGA ALPHAhttp://www.barnmice.com/profile/PattiHanco
