Hello and Welcome!

Blogging and social networking as a communication environment is one of those great mediums that we are very excited to be a part of.

Our clear objective in joining all of you at Barnmice is to post information on the web about risk management and insurance as it relates to horses and equine activity for everyone’s benefit.

That said, let me tell you about myself and how I got to where we are today.

Some of you may know me as, Mike King the “Insurance guy”. I am proud to say that my articles regarding insurance over several years in a variety of publications and public speaking Q and A sessions across Canada have been read and seen by a wide and large audience.

However, many of you may not know that I have been involved in the horse industry for more than 40 years – riding, training, managing a barn, competing, teaching, judging, horse show organizing. I seem to have seen just about all of it – and for the last 17 years I have been a dedicated insurance broker specializing in the development and delivery of insurance products and services across Canada – all related to horses.

One of my recent and enjoyable experiences saw the design, publishing and delivery of an online insurance course in association with the University of Guelph’s web based course offering. This is a course offered twice a year and I am privileged to now be a guest teacher for a full week of each session to answer questions related to the insurance course material we put together. I am still amazed by the fact that even though the course offering originates in Guelph, Ontario, we have had student participants from as far away as Australia, USA, United Kingdom and Israel which proves that the world of horses is a very small place and that there is real power in the internet.

Drawing on these years of interacting with horses and their people there is no doubt in my mind that the basic needs of the equine community are the same no matter where the horses are. We all thirst for information on ways to deal with life with horses and the best information comes from others who have been there, done that.

I am hopeful that over time, I can share solid, consistent and non-partisan information about many insurance related topics including:

a) What insurance is (and what it is not)
b) How you can use insurance to your advantage
c) How to avoid duplication in coverage
d) What type of insurance you ‘really need’ for you and your horse

This great thing about this site and blogging in general is that the all of us get to have a conversation and with that all said, I really hope to hear from you with questions/comments – whatever!

So glad to have an "insurance guy" on this site! I have no clue when it comes to the legalities of the horse industry & can't wait to learn. I'm especially looking forward to the blog on 'What type of insurance you ‘really need’ for you and your horse'. I have a horse boarding with me & have no idea what type of insurance I should have to cover myself if an issue should arise concerning him. For example, if he were to get loose & cause a car accident or something like that, what insurance would I need if I were held liable??

Christine - Additional Insured “status” in this context simply means that the clinician or land owner where you hold your events/shows/clinics/meeting etc. will be protected by the insurance policy in force for the dressage club.

Here is an example of how this would play out

Let’s assume that the dressage group is running a clinic. Let’s assume that a claim arises (somebody falls off during the clinic and gets hurt.. which leads the injured person to sue). The law suit would potentially name the following as co-defendants in the suit:

a) the dressage group (because it was their event)
b) the land owner (because they own the land and buildings where the incident took place)
c) the clinician (because they were in charge when the incident took place)

If the dressage group’s policy showed the clinician and land owner as Additional Insured, then the dressage group’s policy would respond and defend all of the above – separately and severally.

This is a common risk management strategy and is typically an inexpensive alternative to acquiring separate insurance policies for common exposures at events such as the above.

Cindy – in regards to protecting your horse from accident/injury many companies do provide this type of insurance - under our ‘Equi-Care’ program this coverage is called Major Medical and was designed to be used if you incur emergency Veterinarian expenses for a life or health threatening situation, including surgical and non-surgical procedures. We will be posting a blog within the next couple of weeks explaining the different types of coverage available to ‘you’ as the horse owner.

Adriana, as we are based in Canada we can only provide insurance to members in ON, BC, AB, SK, MB, NB, NS – there may be an equine related insurance brokerage in Mexico your best bet would be to type it into a search engine and see what comes up.

....so are you going to blog about each of the above topics soon? I'm interested! Especially about what insurance I really need (having just insured my horse for the first time -- it seems like everyone around me is having a bad time, with horses colicing, blood infections -- it scared me into insurance!)
