We hear Dressage instructors say that shoulder-in is a great movement for suppling, straightness, and getting the hind end to engage, but when was the last time you actually saw a practical application to this movement?

In many of the western disciplines, it is commonly taught to do a haunches-in when teaching a horse to pick up the correct lead. There is nothing wrong with this method; however, there comes a time when the horse knows how to pick up the correct lead and we need to teach the horse to be straight in the departure. Many people think it is the haunches that needs to be fixed, but that is not always the case. Sometimes we can use the shoulders to fix the appearance of haunches-in.

This video shows a practical application of shoulder-in to the teach realignment of the a canter departure. If the departure is done as instructed in this video, it will set up the horse so the haunches are not leading. This will counter the tendency for a haunches-in when departing in to a canter.

It would be great if you would post the entire video here, rather than just a preview, so we could enjoy the whole thing. :)
